Music Review – Deacon Blue

20170423_143046

Hello, welcome to a revised blog – with a bit of a new look. I hope you like it. Please contact me and let me know.
What is now included – I’ve tried to include BBC Sport which does not feature on the BBC Red Button channel now – more and more people have access to the BBC Sport App, therefore I believe adding information such as this is useful. For example on the BBC Sport App/Website this week, there’s Lacrosse and NI Super Cup Football – which sadly won’t appear on the BBC Red Button channel.
What you won’t see anymore – the BT Showcase archive page of listings has gone, as I don’t think it’s particularly useful to see what has been shown, it’s more important to tell you what will be shown. For this season on BT Showcase, expect 12 UEFA Champions League games (each British team has to be shown once), 14 UEFA Europa League matches, and highlights of each Big Bash League Cricket match. We should also see daily Ashes highlights (BT Sport have live coverage of the Winter Series). In the past we’ve seen 9 live Aviva Premiership Rugby Union games each season, but Channel 5 have now picked up 5 live games each season, so I don’t think we’ll see anymore on BT Showcase. This is the last season which BT have to show 26 UEFA games, whether the channel will survive or not after May will be interesting to see…
Another change is I’ve deleted the individual pages of music reviews and details of my MC work. Music/DVD reviews and other occasional reviews will appear here, supplementing the listings.

And Coming Soon…

Emirates Cup to be shown live and exclusively on Quest.

EMIRATES1.jpg

Chris’s Verdict:
Great that Quest is making even more Sport available for Freeview viewers. British Superbikes Round 7 will be live on Quest on August 6th and Round 9 will be shown on September 10th. The Snooker World Open will also be shown between September 18th and 24th… and the European Masters and Home Nations will follow later in the year! So many Snooker tournaments now available to watch on Freeview via BBC, ITV4 or Quest – it’s great for the sport. Quest did show some football three years ago, when they broadcast the 2014 Schalke 04 Cup and the Dubai Challenge Cup.

Fans can watch all the action live and for free on Freeview, Freesat, Sky, Virgin and BT TV.
Saturday 29 July – RB Leipzig vs Sevilla at 2pm and Arsenal vs Benfica at 4.20pm.
Sunday 30 July – RB Leipzig vs Benfica at 2pm and Arsenal vs Sevilla at 4.20pm

Full Transmission Times – Sat 13:55-15:45 and 16:15-18:05/Sun 13:55-15:45 and 16:15-18:05

Quest is to show live and exclusive coverage of the Emirates Cup 2017 over the weekend of the 29-30 July as Arsenal play host for the summer pre-season tournament – and £52 million record signing Alexandre Lacazette makes his home debut.

Quest will bring football fans all the action live and for free from the four-way clash at the Emirates Stadium – that welcomes Benfica, the current Portuguese champions, Sevilla, the Europa League winners in 2014, 2015 and 2016, and RB Leipzig, who finished this season as runners up in the Bundesliga.

This will be the ninth staging of the Emirates Cup, which has been a regular fixture in Arsenal’s pre-season schedule since moving to Emirates Stadium.

The Emirates Cup 2017 kicks-off at 2pm on Saturday 29 July with RB Leipzig taking on Sevilla, Arsenal then face Benfica at 4.20pm. On Sunday 30 July, RB Leipzig play Benfica at 2pm, before Arsenal bring the tournament to a close against Sevilla, which kicks off at 4.20pm.

As normal, teams are awarded three points for a win and one point for a draw. However, the competition rewards attacking play, with teams awarded an additional point for each goal they score. Shots on target will used to decide the tournament winners if teams are level on points and goal difference.

“The Emirates Cup is a fantastic tournament and great addition to Quest’s line-up of top sporting action. From the iconic Le Mans 24 Hours endurance race to the Giro d’Italia, cycling’s first grand tour of the season and World Snooker’s Home Nations Series later in the year, Quest shows a rich variety of sport for fans, all for free,” said Simon Downing, Head of Quest.

Arsenal Chief Executive Ivan Gazidis said: “We’re all delighted to once again be hosting the Emirates Cup this summer. Every year we have staged the competition, the Emirates Cup has been hugely successful and a thoroughly enjoyable weekend of football. Benfica, Sevilla and Leipzig are three strong clubs, with good players, who will not only hopefully produce some exciting football, but also provide us with high quality preparation ahead of the new season.”

Quest is on Freeview channel number 37, Freesat 167, Sky, Virgin Media and BT TV.

UK Sports Broadcasting Rights – Part 1: Golf
Time to start a new weekly series, trying to explain the Sport available on Freeview at present. And, with the conclusion to The Open this weekend – seems like Golf is a good place to start. And, if the rights situation changes with Golf, I’ll republish in a future issue. With Golf, it’s quite straight forward – there’s only the BBC that broadcasts any Golf on Freeview at present, with a mixture of live broadcasts and highlights programmes.
Majors
The Open – With live coverage exclusive to Sky Sports now, there’s a two hour daily highlights programme for each day, on BBC Two until 2021.
The Masters – BBC Two once again the broadcaster. Highlights of Rounds 1 and 2, plus live coverage of Rounds 3 and 4 until 2019.
US PGA Championship – Live and exclusive on the BBC in 2017 (reported in the press this week but still to be officially confirmed by the BBC), if true, it would meanthe BBC broadcast 6 days of live coverage from the ‘Majors’ in total.

Other Events
Ryder Cup – Highlights will be on the BBC until 2018, with live coverage on Sky Sports.
BMW PGA Championship – Highlights will be on the BBC until 2018, with live coverage on Sky Sports.
Scottish Open – Highlights will be on the BBC until 2018, with live coverage on Sky Sports.

TV Player Highlights For This Week

Eurosport – TV Player is home to Eurosport, and the channels have extensive coverage of the Women’s European Football Championships. On Saturday, there’s live coverage of Iceland v Switzerland at 5pm on Eurosport 1 and France v Austria at 7:30pm on Eurosport 2 – no Freeview coverage for these games. The Cycling Tour De Wallonie starts on Eurosport 1 on Monday.

Comedy Central – Look out for Sharknado on Thursday at 9pm. I’ve only seen clips of this, but it attracted a cult following, and sequels have followed!

Music Review – Deacon Blue: The Believers

p041c2pv

And now, time to take a listen to Deacon Blue’s latest album, ‘The Believers’. I first truly appreciated Deacon Blue during my college and university days, thanks to college friend Craig West, who compiled a cassette full of his recommended Deacon Blue favourites for me to discover. Also, during their ‘Homesick’ tour, I saw them perform live at the Manchester Apollo, and it still is genuinely one of the best concerts I have ever been to.

Great venue, great band, great sound – what more could you want? I also recently bought their first album, ‘Raintown’ on vinyl – which is an absolute classic. Fast forward to present date, and how does the band sound now?

Track Listing:
The Believers
This Is A Love Song
I Will and I Won’t
Meteors
Gone
What I Left Out
A Boy
Birds
You Can’t Know Everything
Delivery Man
Come Awake
B Boy

On Deacon Blue’s website at the time of release (September 2016), singer Ricky Ross wrote “Here’s eleven songs to take you on the next part of the journey. Old songs are old friends; we hope you can find it in your hearts to let these new ones into your life.”
The Believers is a great opening track, and for me, is a classic, up there with ‘Chocolate Girl’, ‘Real Gone Kid’ and many others.

Tracks 2 and 3 are really strong too – I Will and I Won’t is a great love song, which will play over and over in your head, hours after you’ve listened to it.

And, I’ve listened to this album twice now and it was even better, the second time around.  Deacon Blue are touring this year – check out http://deaconblue.com/live/ for more information.  It’s been too long since that gig at the Apollo, I will have to go and see them again!  Chris

Snooker Coming to Barnsley!

Barnsley To Host Snooker’s English Open

Barnsley will stage a World Snooker ranking tournament for the first time in October when the English Open comes to the town.

The event will run from October 16 to 22 at the Barnsley Metrodome with 128 of the world’s best players in action, and tickets are on sale now.

The tournament was new to the calendar last season and staged in Manchester, with China’s Liang Wenbo beating Judd Trump in the final. Top stars including Ronnie O’Sullivan, Mark Selby, John Higgins, Neil Robertson and Shaun Murphy also competed for the Steve Davis Trophy.

And now it moves to South Yorkshire with a stellar field of the sport’s top players expected to enter and battle for the title. The English Open, televised live by Eurosport, is the first of the season’s Home Nations series and carries a top prize of £70,000.

And any player winning all four Home Nations events will also earn a massive £1 million bonus. So the champion in Barnsley will head to the next event in Belfast dreaming of that unprecedented prize.

World Snooker Chairman Barry Hearn said: “We are delighted to bring a ranking tournament to Barnsley for the first time. We have staged various qualifying events at the Metrodome in recent years and we are sure it will prove an excellent venue.

“We know what fantastic support there is for snooker in the Yorkshire region, the county is very much a global centre for our sport as it also hosts the World Championship in Sheffield and the UK Championship in York. So we expect to see fans come out in their droves to support the English Open in Barnsley and make sure it stays in their town.

“With 128 players in action it really is an incredible chance to see so many of your heroes for the price of a single ticket, with value for money that you won’t see anywhere else in sport. Seats will sell fast though so get them booked quickly.”

Take advantage of a SPECIAL OPENING OFFER with all-day tickets to the first four days of the tournament costing just £10 each! This gives fans the chance to see a wide range of players on multiple tables throughout the day. This offer will not last long and is subject to availability. All-day tickets for the final cost £55 and they are expected to sell out rapidly.

Book tickets fast – call 0871 620 7052 (calls cost 13p per minute plus the network access charge) or visit www.worldsnooker.com/tickets

Cricket Back on the BBC!

Chris: Great that live cricket will be returning to the BBC!  We’ve been lucky enough to see live Big Bash Cricket on Channel Five, but this means live England Cricket – and for five years too.  Hopefully it will bring more fans to the game.

From the BBC Media Centre:
The BBC and ECB today announced a new five-year, strategic partnership that brings live cricket back to BBC TV for the first time in 21 years.

The deal, which runs from 2020 to 2024, sees the nation’s favourite broadcaster become the exclusive, free to air home for cricket. The BBC runs the most popular TV, radio and digital sports services in the UK, and cricket will take centre stage across all platforms to ensure the sport reaches the widest possible audience.

The deal involves live TV coverage of two England men’s international T20 matches, one England women’s T20 international, plus live TV coverage of 10 men’s matches from the ECB’s New T20 competition, and up to eight live matches from the women’s T20 tournament including both Finals.

The BBC will also broadcast primetime TV highlights of England men’s home international matches. In total, there will be over 100 hours of cricket back on BBC TV from 2020.

Director General Tony Hall says: “The BBC is delighted and the public will be too. It’s long been our ambition to bring live cricket back to BBC television. I’m thrilled to see that ambition realised. Cricket is an integral part of the British summer and the BBC will be putting its full weight behind the nation’s favourite summer sport.

“Our aim will be to make the new T20 competition a huge success. Existing cricket fans – and the millions more who will discover a new love of cricket – have a huge amount to look forward to.”

In addition, the BBC has retained exclusive, live national radio rights to English cricket, a fitting way to celebrate Test Match Special’s 60th birthday this year. The iconic and much-loved TMS will continue to deliver ball-by-ball commentary of all England men’s internationals alongside an expanded commitment to the women’s game.

The BBC has also re-secured an extensive package of digital clip rights to the English cricketing summer building on a service viewed more than 30 million times last year. Live audio commentaries from every match of the County cricket season will also be available on the BBC Sport website – almost 4,000 hours per year.

Since its introduction by the ECB in 2003, T20 cricket has spread around the globe. The fast-paced thrill of the short-form game coupled with the BBC’s wealth of experience in showcasing major sporting events ensures cricket fans can look forward to an innovative, fresh and exciting new viewing experience. The BBC’s coverage will have great cricket at the heart of great entertainment.

Barbara Slater, Director of BBC Sport, says: “This will lead to a step change in the BBC’s coverage of cricket across TV, radio and digital platforms. We are extremely excited about what we have to offer by taking cricket to the widest possible audience and inspiring the next generation to pick up bat and ball. With 97 percent of the UK population using the BBC every week, the potential for growing the game further is huge.”

Tom Harrison, Chief Executive Officer of ECB, says: “BBC are valuable long-term partners, bringing cricket to listeners, viewers and a new digital audience. We are delighted they will go to another level with live coverage of International and domestic T20 – men’s and women’s – alongside prime-time highlights shows and a commitment to taking the game to even wider audiences.”

Last year the BBC accounted for a market-leading 41 percent of TV sports audiences bringing the nation together around the biggest sporting events. International cricket will join an extensive sporting portfolio that includes the Olympic Games, the World Cup, European Football Championships, Match of the Day, Wimbledon, the FA Cup and the 6 Nations.

Aldi Prosecco Reviewed!

Now time to review Aldi’s Prosecco…  three in one!

Organic Prosecco – £7.99

Aldi say its “…Eco-friendly fizz sourced from the Corvezzo family’s 150-hectare estate, 30km north-east of Venice. Grown with no pesticides or herbicides used in the vineyard, the grapes are predominately hand picked and gently pressed to ensure only the highest quality of juice is used. The winery is also committed to using renewable energy wherever possible.”  Wasn’t my favourite in truth… read on to find my Aldi prosecco of choice…

Valdobbiadene Prosecco Spumante – £7.99

Light and refreshing with pleasing bubbles, attractive autumn fruits and delicate floral touches. Good acidity and a light creamy flavour. This is a stylish and gloriously attractive Italian sparkler.

Decided to get this prosecco tested during a party at our house earlier this year.  As for scores on this one, this came out on top out of the three!  I gave it a 6 out of 10, it had plenty of bubbles, and for me, it had a nice taste to it.  The lowest score out of the five testers was 6 out of 10, the highest score was 7 1/2 – 33 out of 50 in total.  But, for less than £8, it’s great for any celebration – and certainly good value.  Problem is, we soon had an empty bottle!

Belletti Prosecco Spumante – £5.79

Aldi say “…it’s the ideal partner for refined appetizers and delicate fish, white meats and fresh cheese dishes. Citrus fruit and flowery features characterise this wine’s scent.”

Again, my favourite was the Valdobbiadene Prosecco Spumante – but, for less than £6, this would be attractive for the price.  For a couple of pounds more, I would upgrade and buy the Valdobbiadene, but let me know if you think differently!

Once again, thanks to Aldi for the samples – my comments are my own… if you like the reviews, please let me know.  Bottles available in Aldi stores – stocks permitting.  Chris
