Chris’s Sport on Freeview Guide – Issue 4.5

Just discovered tonight that the very first ‘Match of the Day’ will be shown on BBC Red Button on Sunday morning at 10:30 – in full!  From 1964, featuring Liverpool v Arsenal.  Only ever seen clips of this – but fantastic that the BBC are showing this.  I’ve asked the BBC if they plan on screening more classic episodes during the season, or whether it will be a one-off for the 50th anniversary, I’ll keep you posted.  Either way, enjoy the 1st ever episode – Liverpool v Arsenal, and Roger Hunt with a brilliant goal to kick off proceedings.  Match of the Day started on BBC2, with just one game being screened every Saturday – it was only after England’s success in the ’66 World Cup that the show moved to BBC1.  If anyone is recording the first episode tomorrow, please let me know I’d love to have a copy on DVD.

I watched the Match of the Day 50th anniversary tribute on BBC1 – I thought it was ok, but an hour just wasn’t long enough.  The best tribute is this DVD box set which I have:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Match-Day-The-Best-60s/dp/B0002ADW8A/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1408778989&sr=8-1&keywords=match+of+the+day+dvd

It’s over four hours long and features the story of MOTD from 1964 right through to 1989 – sadly no other releases to continue the story :-(.  But it’s narrated by John Motson and the clips are fantastic, 3 DVD’s – one for the 60’s, one for the 70’s and one for the 80’s.
