Chris’s Sport on Freeview Guide – Issue 8

Welcome to Issue 8 of the Sport on Freeview Guide – we have a great interview this week, but before that – just to say, keep coming to the site, The Professionals are coming!  All will be revealed soon! So, this week’s interview is with Tom Briggs – Tom has an award-winning blog for all us fathers out there…  And if you like the interview and site – please vote for Tom, see below!

There’s still time to nominate your favourite dad blogger – LoveAllDadsAwards

Chris – So your website is – what gave you the inspiration?

Tom – I’d not long become a dad and wanted to keep a record of the things my son got up to and the milestones he reached. I wanted to write a book first of all, but thought a blog would be a good way of seeing what people thought of my writing. Four years and another son later, I’m still blogging but had completely forgotten about the book until just now!
Chris – There’s also a link on your website to a podcast you’re involved with, tell us about this?
Tom – I’m still not sure how I ended up on this, but am glad I’m part of the team! There are four of us – all dads – and we record a weekly show about parenting from a dad’s point of view. We discuss relevant news stories and articles from parenting websites and have a laugh doing it and people really enjoy it. So much so that we won the Innovate category in the BritMums Brilliance in Blogging Awards this year.
Chris – I’m a part time stay-at-home dad and I think there’s certainly a stigma about dads going to ‘babygroups’ – don’t always mums talking to me! (To the person who was rude to me at babygroup this morning – shame on you, next week you should talk back to me when I make a bloody effort to talk to you!)
Babygroup this morning
Me – (Making small talk) My son always goes round with his bunny – he’ll have it at his 21st birthday party!
Woman – (Abrupt) What’s the problem?  If he wants it, he wants it.
End of conversation…
So, Tom What have your experiences been like?
Tom – I think I’ve been lucky as people have always been very friendly and welcoming to me. I know that outdated attitudes are alive and well out there and it makes me really angry. Sadly, there are still so many people who think that dads are second-class parents and it’s ridiculous.
Chris – How has the blog changed since you started writing it?
Tom – It’s definitely evolved! I’ve branched out to write about other things as well as parenting and have a more disciplined approach to writing it. I also work with brands now and then to make a little bit of extra money from sponsored content and regularly include reviews too. The constant is the tone of voice though – even in posts like these as it’s important to me to stay true to the way it was when I started out.
Chris – So, onto sport – what sport do you like watching on TV?  I normally have to watch highlights of most sport!
Tom – Football, football, football! I’m a bit of a one-sport man really. I don’t mind watching a bit of tennis or things like the Olympics when they’re on, but it’s the beautiful game for me. I have to record a fair few games and watch them at a more convenient time – early evening kick offs are the worst for this – but if my team are on telly, I make sure I see them!
Chris – What’s the sporting event you’ve not been to that you would love to go to one day?
Tom – That would have to be the FA Cup Final. With Spurs trouncing either Arsenal or Chelsea before lifting the silverware!
Chris – Readers can also find you on Twitter – what’s your address?

Tom – I can be found at @DiaryOfTheDadA big thanks to Tom for a brilliant interview – as a Dad for two and a half years, I can relate to a lot of stuff on Tom’s site, it’s really well written and there’s content for non-parents too; look out for his September 15th post where he lists his ten favourite books of all time.  Visit and we’ll have another interview for you at weekend!
