Sport on Freeview Guide 2015 – Issue 1

Sport on Freeview 2015 – Issue 1

Compiled by Chris Benson

The blog is back!  No unrelated interviews like last time, it’ll be about Sport and Freeview – the stuff you actually want to hear about.  If you like it, spread the word!  Tell your friends!  If you go to a pub that shows sport – tell them about the blog, so they know what sport is going to be on!

Concentrate on the Football!

Before we move on – just a quick observation from this weekend’s football highlights shows.

  • Match of the Day (BBC1, Saturday evening) – 85 minute programme, 7 matches from the Premier League.  If you cut out the interviews and analysis segments, the actual football came to 51 minutes.
  • The Football League Show (BBC1, Saturday evening) – 80 minute programme, take away the analysis and interviews and there’s 50 minutes of highlights and goals.
  • African Cup of Nations Highlights (ITV4, Sunday evening) – A 60 minute timeslot, take away the adverts and analysis and there was 33 minutes of football.
  • Match of the Day 2 (BBC1, Sunday evening) – 55 minute programme, 2 matches from the Premier League.  Again if you cut out the interviews and analysis segments, the actual football came to just 21 minutes.

Take from it, what you will – but I’ll say this, I edited Match of the Day myself on Saturday night to the 51 minute version I refer to above, and it flowed better – just one match after another, I might just do the same next week!

Motors TV Feature

Motors TV International stroke

I’m proud to say my first issue features an interview with Motors TV, now available on Freeview Channel 71 and also on Channel 240.  For a quick guide as to whether you can receive Motors TV on your TV, take a look at my You Tube video at http://youtu.be/WMQnntqsb1I

  1. When did Motors TV originally launch?

The channel launched across Europe in 2000 and in the UK in March 2001. It first came to Freeview as an IP channel (240) in late February of last year before being available on channel 71 in October.

  1. What can we expect to see on the channel during 2015?

Motors TV is the world’s only round-the-clock television channel dedicated to all forms of motorsport. Therefore viewers can expect everything from live world and international championships to the most obscure grassroots categories. On four wheels the FIA World Rally Championship and FIA World Endurance Championship are probably our two biggest series while the likes of Tractor Pulling (look it up!) and popular Motors TV Live Raceday, which includes all manner of club series in the UK, perfectly emphasise our diverse range of coverage. FIM MXGP, Endurance World Championship and X-Trial coverage keeps our bike viewers happy, too.

  1. The channel is now available on Freeview in two ways (Channel 71 and via Connect TV) – what’s the audience response been like to this?

Very positive indeed, both in terms of die-hard fans who previously never had the means of watching and amongst casual viewers who might only be interested in very specific programmes. The ‘Freeview effect’ has also been very useful in attracting new programmes and strengthening our relationships with existing championships that recognise the obvious benefits of their product being available free-to-air in the UK.

  1. On our blog we will regularly feature the weekend highlights from your channel – if viewers are new to Motors TV and perhaps want to suggest programming and features, how can they contact the channel?

Social media, and specifically Twitter (@MotorsTV), is probably their best bet. Our 30,000 followers are very passionate and opinionated. We always make an effort to respond and interact, however difficult the question! Or, if they want to do it the old fashioned way, they can email contact@motorstv.com.

  1. We’ll also be featuring weekend highlights from Motors TV, as well as downloadable full comprehensive listings on the blog – it’s safe to say that even when races clash with different championships, Motors TV always shows delayed coverage where live coverage has not been possible?

Correct. The vast majority of motorsport takes place over the weekend so inevitably there are going to be clashes (Motors TV isn’t responsible for individual event schedules). When there are we do our best to accommodate fans of each series. So if there’s an endurance race we’ll typically cover the start and finish but interrupt halfway through with coverage of another championship. But whatever the scenario there are always highlights available soon after. It’s also not uncommon for us to have an entire weekend of live coverage comprising four or five different series.

  1. Tell me a little more about Motors TV programming – I guess with worldwide racing, there’s global broadcasts but are independent production companies used for races in the UK?

We take the live World Feed or the official highlights package for international events, while our UK coverage is provided by a number of specialist motorsport production companies who film and produce event coverage.

Click on the link below to find full comprehensive listings for Motors TV right up until February 6th – many thanks to Motors TV for the interview and their kind permission to publish these listings.  Pubs and clubs out there with Freeview – why not switch to Motors TV?  There will be plenty of times during the week where there is no sport on TV, and I think it’s a good channel which will grab the attention of the punter.
