Sport on Freeview 2015 – Issue 5

Welcome back to the blog…

Snooker Welsh Open – Even More Poor Scheduling on BBC Red Button.

Following on from my article on the BBC Red Button scheduling of the Welsh Open this week, I can confirm that the two semi-finals will NOT be shown on the Red Button Channel.  The afternoon semi-final between John Higgins and Luca Brecel will be available on the BBC Sport website, and on the BBC Sport App, but the Red Button Channel will be showing Final Score.  In the evening, it’s the Cycling World Track Championships… so again no snooker.

Despite this… the final is scheduled in for tomorrow – but still disappointing that we couldn’t see the semi-finals today.

Interview with Shaun Murphy

Congratulations to Shaun Murphy who won the Snooker Masters in January.  With the Welsh Open this week, and the World Grand Prix coming up on ITV4 in March, I asked Shaun a couple of questions for the blog…  It was 2005 when I got interested in Snooker – the first World Championships I watched saw Murphy lift the Crucible crown.

Chris      Shaun, first of all congratulations on winning the Masters in January – superb performance throughout the tournament, how does it feel to join the ‘Triple Crown Club’?

Shaun   “It’s unbelievable to join such a special club. Only 10 people belong to it and to be one of the 10 is a real honour and something I’ll cherish.”.
Chris      For us Freeviewers, we’ll see you again on our screens in Llandudno next month in the new World Grand Prix tournament (I went to Llandudno for family holidays every year for about 25 years – love the place).  I’ve been impressed with the ITV4 coverage to date (e.g Champion of Champions), have you seen much of their coverage?

Shaun   “I’m very pleased that ITV are back in snooker. It shows snooker’s popularity is going in the right direction and hopefully it will bring the sport to a wider audience. In fact, keep tuned in, ‘cos I’ll be doing a bit of studio work from Llandudno.”

Chris      Me and my better half have our tickets for the Crucible for April 20th (the first Monday of the tournament), you must be pleased that the tournament will be in Sheffield until at least 2017?
Shaun   “I’m delighted that the Worlds is staying in Sheffield as the Crucible is the spiritual home of our sport.”
Question from Blog Reader Craig Whitfield:  Do you think 2015 could be your year again to win at the Crucible?  (It was 9 years between John Higgins’s first title and second titles, and he went on to win four, do you think you could emulate this achievement?

Shaun   “I’ve tried my hardest for the last nine years to make it my year again. I can’t believe it’s 10 now since I won it. But Alex Higgins won his second title a decade after he claimed his first, so who knows”

Chris      And for those with Freeview who purchase a Now TV pass, they can watch you next month the Snooker Shoot Out at Blackpool – great tournament, went to watch a couple of years ago… is this a tournament you look forward to, it’s got a format all of its own really?
Shaun   “It’s certainly a very different format and if it manages to bring even more people into the game, then that’s fine by me.”

Click on the link below to find full comprehensive listings for Motors TV right up until February 27th  – many thanks to Motors TV for the interview and their kind permission to publish these listings.  Pubs and clubs out there with Freeview – why not switch to Motors TV?  There will be plenty of times during the week where there is no sport on TV, and I think it’s a good channel which will grab the attention of the punter.
