NOW TV Trial (Tues) (Day 6)

Well, I’m off out shortly, but thought I’d show you a couple of shots of what the Now TV interface looks like.  Really clear, easy to use – this is taken from the Sky Sports screen, and also the Entertainment Pass screen tonight.

NOW TV Trial (Day 5) (Mon)

All I feel like I’ve done tonight is end up on the telephone talking to various people, don’t know where the night has gone.  In the background though, I did have on Sky Sports 1 with it’s live Football League coverage and a very waterlogged pitch.  Then, at 31 minutes, whilst I was out of the room, something happened which had not happened before during the trial, the picture froze and the box was buffering, trying to retain the live picture – it didn’t happen and I gave up on the football.  This was not necessarily a Now TV error, it all depends on your broadband speed and the broadband speed in our area isn’t great – the faster your broadband, the more reliable a service you should have – as they say, you get what you pay for, and we don’t pay much to our provider, compared to many! Was hoping the new ‘All 4’ app would be active tonight, this has replaced 4 On Demand, but checked tonight and 4od was still on the Now box – i’ll look out for an update tomorrow.

Just a quick one to mention – but if you purchase any of the Now TV passes (e.g Movies, Entertainment or Sports), then you also get access to Sky Sports News as well – good little channel, I used to watch it regularly when it was on Freeview.

NOW TV Trial (Day 4) (Sun)

Ok, so the week is going ok so far – I’ve talked about how simple the box is to use, I’ve mentioned some of the features and apps you can get, but talk about Sky Store for now.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Sky Store has a huge library of recent and classic titles to watch at the touch of a button; for example Interstellar is on Sky Store now, which was in UK cinemas from the 1st week in November.  Just about 4 and a half months on, you can watch it fro the comfort of your living room for just £4.49 – considering how much it costs to go to the cinema these days, I think that’s pretty good – by the time two of you go to watch a film at a multiplex and get popcorn and a drink you probably won’t have change out of £30  I’m old fashioned normally with films, I normally wait till three years till they arrive on terrestrial TV!  But Sky Store offers a pretty cheap solution which means I get to watch films 2 and a half years earlier than what I do now!  And for a lot of the titles on there, you can watch a trailer for free, to see if the film takes your fancy before you purchase it.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

And of course if you miss them on Sky Store – well you can also purchase a Now TV Sky Movies Pass – currently one of their new releases is Marvel’s ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ which came out last August, so within 7 months of cinema release, it’s available on Sky Movies.  The NOW TV Movie Pass is currently £9.99 per month but at the moment there’s a 30 day free trial available for new customers – click here to find out more http://www.nowtv.com/movies

Now TV Trial 2015 Day 3 (Sat)

Thought I’d tell you what apps you can find on the Now box – for starters, one of my favourites is Vevo.  For music videos, which have been legally uploaded by the artists representatives, you can find them here.  I say that bit, because there’s quite a few artists you won’t find, and with some artists, there’s only a handful of songs.  But, it’s still a really good service – you can create a Vevo account online and create your own playlists and then sync this with your Now box and leave the playlist running – I’ve done this before, quite good if you’ve got people coming round to play in the background.

The BBC Sport app is another of my favourites.  Most sports have their own individual section with the latest headlines and video clips.  There’s also a ‘Live Sport’ section – if there’s any live BBC Sport taking place today, you can get to it here.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

The BBC Red Button channel through the aerial (Freeview Channel 601) doesn’t always have live sport when there’s an event (e.g when two events collide such a music event and a sports event they may choose to show the music event).  But through this app, all of the live sport will be available.  So, at Wimbledon I believe that was 10 live courts of action last year – plenty of choice.  To keep an eye at what’s on BBC Sport, keep an eye on this link – http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/17151954

Bought a new phone today – from Argos.  That’s relevant with what I’m about to write about.  My wife bought a new phone as well – and so, after buying a roll of wrapping paper to ensure we’d spent over £100, we got a £10 Argos voucher to spend on another transaction – happy days!

So, we decided to buy this…

http://www.argos.co.uk/static/Product/partNumber/1985746.htm

It’s a Now TV Box with a 6 month Entertainment Pass, and at £34.99 it’s a bargain, no other word for it… but with our £10 voucher it’s a steal at £24.99.  So what are we going to do with it?

Firstly, when our Entertainment Pass expires in May, we will cancel it before the direct debit commences.  Then we will activate this new 6 month pass, meaning we’ll have a valid pass all paid for until the middle of November – how’s that?!

Secondly, to spread the word about Now TV, we have a box already so with this one we’re going to give it to one of our friends so they can see just how good it is – our good deed for the week!

There are various Now TV packages/boxes you can buy… these are just the ones from Argos but other retailers sell the boxes too.

Now TV Trial 2015 Day 2 (Fri)

Saw a bit of the Hong Kong Rugby Sevens live on Sky Sports this morning – but not made the most of the Sky Sports Week Pass today – today we did a spring clean once the kids were in bed – best time to do it, literally from 7pm till 11:20…  but very theraputic tidying up!

But the Now TV Entertainment Pass came in handy this afternoon. I bought a 3 month Entertainment Pass from Currys/PC World back in the middle of February for £15, so works out at £5 a month.  What do you get for that?

Catch up TV for 13 channels you could also find on Sky and Virgin.

You also get the ‘live feeds’ for these channels – the 13 channels at present are

ITV Encore

Sky 1

Sky Living

Sky Atlantic

Sky Arts

Nick Jnr

Disney Channel

Nickelodeon

Discovery

Fox

Gold

Comedy Central and MTV

There are also lots and lots of box sets – particularly through the Sky Channels – couple of examples… there’s the entire back catalogue of The West Wing, 24, plus Sky home-grown comedies such as Trollied, Mount Pleasant, Stella…  Game on Thrones is on there too, if you want to catch up with proceedings before the new series starts next month (got to admit I tried watching it once – I couldn’t get into it!).

So, the Entertainment Pass came in handy today because my son wanted to watch his new Peppa Pig DVD we’d bought him from the shop this morning.  Got home and the blu-ray/DVD player wasn’t working at all.  But – don’t panic – there was episodes of Peppa Pig available to watch at the touch of a button – and he’d not seen them before!

Earlier in the week I used the Entertainment Pass to watch 2 new episodes of Modern Family – when we had Sky, this was a show we never missed, it’s in its sixth season now and it’s still funny.  With Now TV, we can either watch the new episode live or watch it on ‘catch-up’ without adverts.  The Entertainment section is really easy to use – there’s a ‘search’ facility to find particular shows, you can search by genre, and there’s even a section which tells you which shows are ending ‘on demand’ soon, so you know you need to watch them soon!

Keep the questions coming, hope you’re liking this week’s feature so far!  Remember to email them over to chriscbenson@hotmail.co.uk

Now TV Trial – Day 1

Now-TV-Logo_RGB_Mid-Blue_Sports

First of all, take a look at this article I did for my Sport on Freeview blog back on September 24th last year.

6:40pm So, here it is – the start of my NOW TV Trial!  Thanks to Amy at Now TV for helping with this.  Over the next week, we’ll be testing out NOW TV, and I’ll be telling you more about it along with way.

So what does the NOW TV box look like?

2014-09-24 18.42.17

Smaller box than what I thought…  So, I open the box…

2014-09-24 18.43.45

Notice the kids toys still all over the floor!  So, there’s a power lead, HDMI lead, manual, batteries, and the box itself… oh, and remote control.

2014-09-24 18.48.12

Now TV box now connected up next to my TV…  looking good…

2014-09-24 19.50.53

Software being added…

2014-09-24 19.58.04

2014-09-24 20.34.33

By 8:30pm, I have Sky Sports 3 on… and ‘World Cup of Pool’ live.  Actually, I was online by about 8pm, and the first thing I did was check out the BBC Sport App (there was live coverage of Scottish Football not being shown on the TV Red Button channel, so a good bonus), I checked out Demand 5 (my two year old loves Thomas and Friends and there’s 260 episodes now at the touch of a button!), and had a quick look at 4od (and played the start of an early episode of Whose Line is It Anyway?).  All shows loaded fine, with just a slight pause whilst they loaded, certainly no buffering no far which I perhaps expected.

The main technical issue I had during configuration was with my TP-Link device which enables me to have Wi-Fi in my lounge – the devices had become ‘unpaired’ so I rang their customer service centre where I thankfully got help to ‘pair’ the devices again.

And now, it’s working.  I’ve also installed Tunein Radio and You Tube to my app list – not tried these out yet, but will do as the week goes on.

Come back tomorrow for another update – and if you have any questions let me know I’ll try and answer them.  Maybe you’re thinking of getting a Now TV box (and let’s face it, for £9.99 it’s a reasonable price), and you’re wondering what you can get.  So far, impressed.

So, now, six months on – I’m doing another week-long trial of the Now TV service, for those like me who have Freeview, it should make a great compliment service to your Freeview Channels.  So now you know how to set up the box, what can you find on there in 2015?  Let’s have a look – P.S  There will be daily updates to the blog each day until next Thursday (2nd April) – keep coming back to the site, and tell your friends – tweet, share on Facebook – any link to my site would be great!  The Now TV feature six months ago was really popular with readers, that’s why I’m doing it again.

Thursday March 26th 2014:

You Tube App

7pm – My NOW TV week-long trial starts with… ‘Hi De Hi’! I’m using the You Tube app on the Now TV box to watch ‘The Great Cat Robbery’, an episode not shown in the recent BBC2 afternoon repeats.  I’m going to be a complete geek now, and tell you that 58 episodes of ‘Hi De Hi’ were made, but some have been missed out for the BBC2 2015 repeat season, for various reasons…

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B1m84Fa1tho – Episode 7: No Dogs Allowed.  From Series 1.  If you want to know why this wasn’t shown, look at this episode from 22 minutes in, there’s a scene which would be too racist to show now, I’ll say no more…

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wuBGUEndPWo – Episode 22: Eruptions.  A Christmas Special, 45 minutes long, presumably not shown because it’s longer than the standard episode.  Shame, because I’ve watched it and it’s a funny one.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rJmGvjfkJBI – Episode 32: Peggy’s Pen Friend.  Not sure why this wasn’t shown, perhaps the ‘Amazons and Slaves’ scene 18 minutes in…

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1aIxhda-ks4 – Episode 40: The Great Cat Robbery.  A Christmas Special, almost an hour long, guessing again due to length this wasn’t shown.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BSFmQX94DH0&list=PLF5E0F7E9D1B04B61&index=7 – Another episode from Series 5, The Epidemic, was shown, but 10 minutes in, had a racist joke edited out – click here, you’ll see what I mean…

Yes, you can watch You Tube on your mobile or tablet, but I love being able to watch it on my TV.  I have the You Tube app on my phone, and with the You Tube app on the Now TV box, this is synchronised to my phone… so I can create a playlist on the move, and it will appear on my You Tube TV interface.  Picture quality obviously depends on clips uploaded, but as a family we use this quite frequently.

Sky Sports on Now TV

9pm – I’m multi-tasking!  Activated a week long Sky Sports pass, so I’m flicking between Sky Sports 1 (Premier League Darts live from Dublin), Live Super League Rugby on Sky Sports 3 (Salford v Widnes) and Channel 4 (the Cameron/Milliband debate).  There’s a problem with channel hopping – I’m missing each time Salford score a try in the rugby!

Let’s write about the Rugby first.  As I write, Salford are winning 36-8 with 12 minutes to go.  The Now TV box is standard SD definition, no HD picture available as of yet… but I’m really impressed with the picture quality.  The I’m really impressed with the picture quality.  Good presentation from Sky Sports at the AJ Bell Stadium, I used to watch Sky’s Rugby League coverage probably 20 years ago when Super League first started, and Eddie Hemmings is still actively involved in their live games.  Salford look set to go 4th in the Super League table, so we’ll move on to the Darts…

Phil Taylor is playing Kim Huybrechts in the Premier League Darts as I write.  Cracking atmosphere from Dublin – the Premier League is shown live over several weeks every Thursday live on Sky Sports.  Each League game is a ‘best of 12’ affair, so could even be a draw…  Again the picture quality is impressive – remember this is being streamed over the internet but I’ve not had any buffering yet, or pixellation.  I’ll be using a Sky Sports Week Pass until next Thursday – these cost £10.99, so £1.57 a day – or you can purchase a Day Pass at the cost of £6.99, but if you want my honest advice, I’d buy the Week long pass.  There is one problem with a week pass – it’s not long enough!  By not having a regular monthly subscription, I’ve missed the first seven rounds of the Premier League darts and it’s Round 7 in the Super League Rugby, so to not watch something from the start of a league or competition may not be easy for everyone.

But, I’m doing this review for a week – please post your questions at the bottom of the blog post – anything you want to know about Now TV?  Let me know and I’ll try and get the answer for you this week!

And for those of you who missed the first election debate – well, 4od is also available on Now TV – but only till March 30th and it will be changing to All 4 – sounds good, for more info click on this article here from a516 digital – http://www.a516digital.com/2015/03/all4-replaces-4od-on-30th-march.html – I’m a Cameron fan, but I’ll be honest, I think Milliband won last night’s first round.

Chris’s Sport on Freeview Guide – Issue 7

Sport on Freeview 2015 – Issue 7

Hello – apologies blog wasn’t complete last week, I went away for the weekend, had literally had no time to finish off the blog post before we set off!!!  Normal service has now resumed.  Please let me know what you think of the site, I’d love to hear from you.  And, spread the word – if you’re on Facebook, put a link to it!  It you’re on Twitter – tweet it!  Tell your friends!

Chris’s Pick of the Weekend

My pick of the weekend has to be the UK Darts Open Friday-Sunday on ITV4.  Starts with 8 dart boards all playing matches at the same time at Butlins Minehead!  Fast stuff, and ITV4’s coverage is superb.  I believe that the tournament is open to anyone – with qualifiers starting at Rileys Sports bars each February, I can’t play darts but I’ve got to have a go next year and see how I get on!  Chris

As always, you will find full listings here for Motors TV.  Click on the link below to find full comprehensive listings for Motors TV right up until March 27th – many thanks to Motors TV for the interview and their kind permission to publish these listings.  Pubs and clubs out there with Freeview – why not switch to Motors TV?  There will be plenty of times during the week where there is no sport on TV, and I think it’s a good channel which will grab the attention of the punter.
