Now TV Trial – Day 1

Now-TV-Logo_RGB_Mid-Blue_Sports

First of all, take a look at this article I did for my Sport on Freeview blog back on September 24th last year.

6:40pm So, here it is – the start of my NOW TV Trial!  Thanks to Amy at Now TV for helping with this.  Over the next week, we’ll be testing out NOW TV, and I’ll be telling you more about it along with way.

So what does the NOW TV box look like?

2014-09-24 18.42.17

Smaller box than what I thought…  So, I open the box…

Notice the kids toys still all over the floor!  So, there’s a power lead, HDMI lead, manual, batteries, and the box itself… oh, and remote control.

Now TV box now connected up next to my TV…  looking good…

By 8:30pm, I have Sky Sports 3 on… and ‘World Cup of Pool’ live.  Actually, I was online by about 8pm, and the first thing I did was check out the BBC Sport App (there was live coverage of Scottish Football not being shown on the TV Red Button channel, so a good bonus), I checked out Demand 5 (my two year old loves Thomas and Friends and there’s 260 episodes now at the touch of a button!), and had a quick look at 4od (and played the start of an early episode of Whose Line is It Anyway?).  All shows loaded fine, with just a slight pause whilst they loaded, certainly no buffering no far which I perhaps expected.

The main technical issue I had during configuration was with my TP-Link device which enables me to have Wi-Fi in my lounge – the devices had become ‘unpaired’ so I rang their customer service centre where I thankfully got help to ‘pair’ the devices again.

And now, it’s working.  I’ve also installed Tunein Radio and You Tube to my app list – not tried these out yet, but will do as the week goes on.

Come back tomorrow for another update – and if you have any questions let me know I’ll try and answer them.  Maybe you’re thinking of getting a Now TV box (and let’s face it, for £9.99 it’s a reasonable price), and you’re wondering what you can get.  So far, impressed.

So, now, six months on – I’m doing another week-long trial of the Now TV service, for those like me who have Freeview, it should make a great compliment service to your Freeview Channels.  So now you know how to set up the box, what can you find on there in 2015?  Let’s have a look – P.S  There will be daily updates to the blog each day until next Thursday (2nd April) – keep coming back to the site, and tell your friends – tweet, share on Facebook – any link to my site would be great!  The Now TV feature six months ago was really popular with readers, that’s why I’m doing it again.

You Tube App

7pm – My NOW TV week-long trial starts with… ‘Hi De Hi’! I’m using the You Tube app on the Now TV box to watch ‘The Great Cat Robbery’, an episode not shown in the recent BBC2 afternoon repeats.  I’m going to be a complete geek now, and tell you that 58 episodes of ‘Hi De Hi’ were made, but some have been missed out for the BBC2 2015 repeat season, for various reasons…

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B1m84Fa1tho – Episode 7: No Dogs Allowed.  From Series 1.  If you want to know why this wasn’t shown, look at this episode from 22 minutes in, there’s a scene which would be too racist to show now, I’ll say no more…

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wuBGUEndPWo – Episode 22: Eruptions.  A Christmas Special, 45 minutes long, presumably not shown because it’s longer than the standard episode.  Shame, because I’ve watched it and it’s a funny one.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rJmGvjfkJBI – Episode 32: Peggy’s Pen Friend.  Not sure why this wasn’t shown, perhaps the ‘Amazons and Slaves’ scene 18 minutes in…

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1aIxhda-ks4 – Episode 40: The Great Cat Robbery.  A Christmas Special, almost an hour long, guessing again due to length this wasn’t shown.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BSFmQX94DH0&list=PLF5E0F7E9D1B04B61&index=7 – Another episode from Series 5, The Epidemic, was shown, but 10 minutes in, had a racist joke edited out – click here, you’ll see what I mean…

Yes, you can watch You Tube on your mobile or tablet, but I love being able to watch it on my TV.  I have the You Tube app on my phone, and with the You Tube app on the Now TV box, this is synchronised to my phone… so I can create a playlist on the move, and it will appear on my You Tube TV interface.  Picture quality obviously depends on clips uploaded, but as a family we use this quite frequently.

Sky Sports on Now TV

9pm – I’m multi-tasking!  Activated a week long Sky Sports pass, so I’m flicking between Sky Sports 1 (Premier League Darts live from Dublin), Live Super League Rugby on Sky Sports 3 (Salford v Widnes) and Channel 4 (the Cameron/Milliband debate).  There’s a problem with channel hopping – I’m missing each time Salford score a try in the rugby!

Let’s write about the Rugby first.  As I write, Salford are winning 36-8 with 12 minutes to go.  The Now TV box is standard SD definition, no HD picture available as of yet… but I’m really impressed with the picture quality.  The I’m really impressed with the picture quality.  Good presentation from Sky Sports at the AJ Bell Stadium, I used to watch Sky’s Rugby League coverage probably 20 years ago when Super League first started, and Eddie Hemmings is still actively involved in their live games.  Salford look set to go 4th in the Super League table, so we’ll move on to the Darts…

Phil Taylor is playing Kim Huybrechts in the Premier League Darts as I write.  Cracking atmosphere from Dublin – the Premier League is shown live over several weeks every Thursday live on Sky Sports.  Each League game is a ‘best of 12’ affair, so could even be a draw…  Again the picture quality is impressive – remember this is being streamed over the internet but I’ve not had any buffering yet, or pixellation.  I’ll be using a Sky Sports Week Pass until next Thursday – these cost £10.99, so £1.57 a day – or you can purchase a Day Pass at the cost of £6.99, but if you want my honest advice, I’d buy the Week long pass.  There is one problem with a week pass – it’s not long enough!  By not having a regular monthly subscription, I’ve missed the first seven rounds of the Premier League darts and it’s Round 7 in the Super League Rugby, so to not watch something from the start of a league or competition may not be easy for everyone.

But, I’m doing this review for a week – please post your questions at the bottom of the blog post – anything you want to know about Now TV?  Let me know and I’ll try and get the answer for you this week!

And for those of you who missed the first election debate – well, 4od is also available on Now TV – but only till March 30th and it will be changing to All 4 – sounds good, for more info click on this article here from a516 digital – http://www.a516digital.com/2015/03/all4-replaces-4od-on-30th-march.html – I’m a Cameron fan, but I’ll be honest, I think Milliband won last night’s first round.

Motors TV Feature

For a quick guide as to whether you can receive Motors TV on your TV, take a look at my You Tube video at http://youtu.be/WMQnntqsb1I

As always, you will find full listings here for Motors TV.  Click on the link below to find full comprehensive listings for Motors TV right up until April 3rd – many thanks to Motors TV for the interview and their kind permission to publish these listings.  Pubs and clubs out there with Freeview – why not switch to Motors TV?  There will be plenty of times during the week where there is no sport on TV, and I think it’s a good channel which will grab the attention of the punter.
