Sport on Freeview Week Commencing Sept 26th 2015

Hello all, here’s a guide to the sport on Freeview over the next seven days…  Apologies for delay in upload this week!  Expect a Europa League game on BT Showcase this week, but at the time of going to press no match details have been announced.  Keep an eye on Freeview Channel 59 – this may appear at the last minute in the listings…  As I type the Champions League game has been announced – Manchester City will be in action…  Wednesday evening.

Pro 12 Rugby

Thanks to BBC for their reply – I’d asked them why Pro 12 Rugby hadn’t been shown live or delayed on Red Button.  I also queried why the pre-Rugby World Cup match between Wales and Italy wasn’t shown.  The BBC said in their reply “…Unfortunately there were scheduling clashes on Red Button for both of the Pro 12 matches. We do our best to show the matches live on Red Button wherever we can.  Wales v Italy was a contractual issue.”

Network to release Exclusive ITV60 DVD Boxset – Details Here!

And so, following my article earlier about ITV, today we have had brilliant news from DVD company Network.  If you like Classic TV like me, you’re going to love this…  read on…

itv-60-pre-buy

To commemorate ITV’s diamond anniversary, independent distributor Network will release a 12-disc boxset featuring 60 episodes from classic TV series including The Sweeney, The Avengers and Upstairs Downstairs, as well as previously unreleased episodes from the broadcaster. ITV60 (15) will be released on DVD on 26 October 2015, RRP £79.99 exclusively through networkonair.com, and is available to pre-buy** now. Terms and conditions apply.

ITV60 will be available from selected retailers from 23 November 2015.

A mixture of timeless classics, forgotten gems and once thought lost shows, this set contains exceptional rarities from the Associated Rediffusion archive: No Hiding Place, Mystery Bag, Crane and Our Man at St. Mark’s, together with previously unreleased episodes of Crossroads, Rainbow, Tiswas, Coronation Street, World in Action, The Bill and a classic Whicker’s World aboard the Orient Express.

Since the summer of 1955, the ITV network has entertained the nation with some of the most memorable programming ever created for British television. This collection celebrates those six decades with an outstanding, specially selected collection of superb dramas, hilarious comedies and thought-provoking documentaries – some of which haven’t been seen since their original transmission.

With each disc themed to provide an “evening’s entertainment”, this dip into the archives provides a trip down Memory Lane as well as a timely reminder of some of the best television of the last 60 years.

Since its launch in 1997, Network has released over 1,000 programmes on DVD and Blu-ray from the ITV library.

You can order this fantastic boxset through this link right here:

Now, time to write to Father Christmas me thinks – and actually, come to think about it – if I tell him about the boxset, I think he might want one as well!

Happy Birthday ITV! Sport Through The Years…

And so, ITV is 60 years old today.  I just wanted to write about some of their sports coverage over the years, I think it deserves a mention.

One of my earliest sporting memories is watching the Mike Tyson fights with my Dad.  He had a 3 hour VHS tape, with each Tyson fight back to back.

The above is an extract from ITV’s coverage of Tyson/Spinks from June 27th 1988 – an era before pay-per-view – if there was a big fight, you would see it for free.  Boxing has recovered slightly in recent years on terrestrial TV but the main attractions are long gone to free-to-air television.

Another memory has to be Saint and Greavsie… ITV’s late 80’s answer to ‘Football Focus’.

The episode above is from April 14th 1990 – it’s brilliant to see again. Another great clip is from ITV’s ‘The Match’ – this extract below is from the 1989/90 season… when ITV broadcast live First Division games.  Sadly this ended in 1992 when Sky Sports acquired live coverage of the all new Premier League.

I grew up in Granadaland and I have fond memories of Granada Soccer Night.  When I first got my own video recorder, I’d stay up, and try to create my own highlights by starting to record the show, then pausing it and re-starting the recording as I saw fit.  Normally, I just ended up with a big messy recording – it was before the days of Windows Movie Maker!

ITV of course have had UEFA Champions League coverage since it started and it’s only in the 2015/16 season that they lost their live coverage to BT Sport (highlights remain).  Here’s an extract from the 1994/95 with Bob Wilson presenting – brilliant footage.

From Football to regional TV.  ITV worked best, in my opinion, when it had a regional network – all making programmes to bring to the network.

Think this programme stayed on regional TV only in the Yorkshire area, but it’s achieved cult status.  Fred Trueman here with Yorkshire TV’s ‘Indoor League’, devised by Sid Waddell who went on to be a legendary darts commentator for Sky Sports.  Indoor League Series 1 and 2 are now available to buy courtesy of Network DVD.

Great memories – happy birthday ITV!

Launch of Talking Pictures TV on Freeview!

Launch of Talking Pictures TV!

image007

Hello all – welcome to another week on the blog, first of all – as they would say in Monty Python… “And Now For Something Completely Different”…

Talking Pictures TV

Not sport related – but this is brilliant news for Freeview and I wanted to share it!  Talking Pictures TV will launch on Freeview next Tuesday (September 22nd). Launching at 1pm – read on for more…

Here’s some of my personal highlights over the next couple of weeks:

Wednesday September 23rd 2015:

7:20am – Flockton Flyer.  Southern TV children’s TV series from 1976 – you may recognise Cassandra (actress Gwyneth Strong) from ‘Only Fools and Horses’!

9:20am – Tell Me Another.  Another Southern TV series – where celebrities give personal anecdotes.  This episode stars Thora Hird, Roy Hudd, George Melly and Warren Mitchell!

Thursday September 24th 2015:

6:00am – Down Amongst the Z Men.  Comedy starring The Goons from 1952!

Tuesday September 29th 2015:

10:35am – Where There’s a Will.  1955 film starring the late, great George Cole.

Saturday October 3rd 2015:

4:45am – All In Good Fun – Record this one, Bob Monkhouse with a 1956 compilation of slapstick comedy.

Many thanks to the Talking Pictures team, especially Sarah Cronin-Stanley, who kindly answered our questions we sent over.  We will ensure we keep in contact with Talking Pictures TV and inform you of upcoming programme highlights.

Chris: Tell us more about Talking Pictures TV – how did it all materialise?

Sarah: Talking Pictures TV was a dream of Renown Pictures, the rights holders to a large library of films from the 30’s onwards. To be able to screen ‘lost’ films and a home for B&W films without which would probably never see the light of day again – we are a very small family run company with a big dream.

Chris: You have a vast catalogue from the Southern TV archive – will we shows such as Runaround, Take a Letter Mr Jones, and maybe How anytime soon?

Sarah: Yes of course, we don’t own How though sadly.

Chris: Viewers can of course purchase the programmes shown, tell us how they can do this?

Sarah: Through our Freephone 0808 178 8212 or online www.renownfilms.co.uk

Chris: What are the long term plans for the channel – what do you hope to see in the future?

Sarah: Talking Pictures to become part of everyday viewing for families, so future generations can appreciate the history of film and enjoy.

Full Press Release from Talking Pictures kindly provided below:

Talking Pictures TV  LAUNCH on Freeview Channel 81

Whether it’s westerns or weepies, comedies or creepies, Talking Pictures Television has it all. So, grab your bag of popcorn and your drink on a stick, take your seat in the one~and~nines, and re~live some of the rarest and greatest gems from Film history

Following its successful launch on SKY epg 343 Talking Pictures TV is launching on Freeview  channel 81,

on

Tuesday 22nd September 2015 at 1pm .

In addition to Our SKY viewers we will now be available to 70% of the UK population in most major cities and towns.

Do you remember the sheer joy and excitement of Saturday Morning Pictures? Where Heroes and villains and clowns and crooners, invariably in glorious black & white, would entertain you for hours and hours. Now those glorious days return, and it’s not just for Saturday mornings. It’s twenty four hours a day. Every day!

So, grab your bag of popcorn and your drink on a stick, take your seat in the one~and~nines, and re~live some of the rarest and greatest gems from Film history, all brought to a grateful viewer by Renown Pictures, the extraordinary DVD label who continue to release their extensive archive. With Talking Pictures Television you can now watch *before* you buy. A unique way to build~up your very own library of Classic British Film.

Whether it’s Bill Travers battling the monstrous ‘Gorgo’, dogged Brighton policeman Jack Warner hot on the heels of a murderer in ‘Jigsaw’, or the touching romance of Michael Denison & Dulcie Gray in ‘The Glass Mountain’, Talking Pictures Television will keep on delivering, allowing viewers to wallow in the very best of British, wherever and whenever they want to.

Not only that, but we conjure up wonderful and rarely broadcast classics from the Hollywood television archives; resurrecting such popular, long unseen favourites as ‘Burke’s Law’ and ‘The June Allyson Show’. Guest~starring everyone from Harpo Marx to Jayne Mansfield, Talking Pictures Television tops up your tinsel town fix too.

Now, after a hugely enjoyable and audience~pleasing four months, the British film~lovers’ best~loved television channel is being made available to an even wider audience. That means *you* can now watch it. You lucky people!

And our September schedule is jam~packed with treasures. Just like every month! However, to mark this exciting new chapter, we have a bushel~load of fresh films starring some of our greatest actors. Alec Guinness takes on one of his favourites roles as an impoverished and opinionated artist in ‘The Horse’s Mouth’. Wendy Hiller plays the principled Salivation Army ‘Major Barbara’, in a script co~adapted for the screen by George Bernard Shaw himself. Michael Redgrave gives one of the performances of his career as the ridiculed and cuckolded Headmaster in Terence Rattigan’s touching drama ‘The Browning Version’;. and vintage old school telly graces the screens with a selection of much loved Episodes from the Southern TV Library. September also see debut screenings for a range of films from 1940s Hollywood, including the effortlessly urbane William Powell in the whimsical ‘Mr. Peabody and the Mermaid’, and the high~octane biopic of Tommy and Jimmy Dorsey. The legendary bandleaders play themselves in this rags to riches tale of brotherly rivalry.

So, whether it’s westerns or weepies, comedies or creepies, Talking Pictures Television has it all. Simply settle back to some of the funniest, most thrilling, and just plain entertaining television available, anywhere. It’s all at the touch of a button. Whatever time you want it!

In order to receive Talking Pictures TV you will need to be within coverage and be watching on a Freeview HD television or Freeview HD recorder.

Most new TVs from the big brands come with Freeview HD built-in or you can simply plug a Freeview HD recorder into an existing HDTV, retune your box or TV and sit back and enjoy Talking Pictures TV.

FAQ

Can I get Talking Pictures on Freeview Where I live?

Enter your address into Freeview’s coverage checker to see if Talking Pictures TV is available in your area.

http://www.freeview.co.uk/availability

The Freeview coverage checker gives a good indication of whether you’ll be able to receive Freeview. However, do bear in mind that it is a prediction based on an area 100 square metres around your address.  There might be some homes in that area which cannot receive Freeview, because of the exact location of the property and other elements of your local geography, such as tall buildings, trees or hills.

When you buy a Freeview HD TV or other equipment, we recommend that you make sure that you can get a refund from your retailer if these local factors prevent you from receiving Freeview.

What Equipment do I need?

You might already have it.  Check if your television is labelled ‘Freeview HD’.   If it is not then you can buy a Freeview HD Recorder (set top box).  Freeview has a list of models available here:

http://www.freeview.co.uk/get-freeview#freeview-box-with-tv

You will also be able to receive the channel if you have Youview, if it does not appear try retuning your Youview box.

Do I need to retune?

Some televisions do not autotune.  If you are within coverage and the channel does not appear we recommend you try retuning your television or set top box.  Here is a link to some instructions on how to retune:

http://www.freeview.co.uk/when-to-re-tune

Will I need to change my aerial to get Freeview HD?

In most cases if you can already receive Freeview using your existing aerial, then it will be able to receive Freeview HD.   If you’re not sure, then your local aerial installer will be able to advise you.

Are the films on Talking Pictures shown in HD?

Although Talking Pictures is not broadcast in HD it is broadcast from the HD multiplex so you need  HD equipment to view it.

The first free UEFA Europa League live coverage on BT Sport Showcase will be Anderlecht v Monaco on Thursday September 17.

Simon Green, head of BT Sport, said: “We have some really exciting games coming up on BT Sport Showcase both in the UEFA Champions League and the UEFA Europa League.

“We really hope fans will take this fantastic opportunity to watch on Freeview and enjoy some excellent European football action as a taster to our full and exclusively live coverage if they’re not already BT Sport customers.”

Chris:  So no British teams featured in the free games this week – they are exclusive for this week to BT Sport Europe customers.  Three British teams still to be featured in both Champions and Europa league… and five more matchday rounds after this, so at least another four non-British games to be expected to my reckoning.  Again, short notice with the announcement of the matches – so if you know anyone who’ll want to watch them, spread the word, they’re not going to be advertised!  ITV’s highlights this week begin at 10pm on Wednesday – with a break for the news at 11, before the conclusion, with Europa League highlights after News at Ten on Thursday.

First of all, a big hello to Beer52

https://www.beer52.com/

Take a look at these – now, I’m guilty of buying craft beers when they’re in Morrisons for 99p (in fact I did that on Tuesday – I see the price, and more than anything I admit that attracts me to trying the product).  Epic fail.

With Beer 52, you get 8 ‘fresh’ craft beers, but an exclusive magazine and snacks for £24.  Think about beer prices in pubs and bars – for independent craft beers at a pub I know not too far away from me you can be talking £4/5 – so to receive 8 beers a month to your door (and different ones to try each month), how can you lose?

https://www.list.co.uk/offer/1795-free-10-voucher-for-beer52/

Save £10 on your first order with the above link – I for one, need to give it a try and order a box!  Beer 52, hello and keep us informed of any offers – we’ll post them right here.

American Football

Look out for Pick screening live American Football on Sunday – great news, especially as Channel 4 won’t be showing any live games this season, and BBC has only confirmed they’ll be showing three live games plus the Superbowl.  Whether Pick will show any more games, it remains to be seen, but for full coverage, Sky Sports has all the NFL action you need.

Hi spread the word – take a look at this

https://mention-me.com/m/ol/sfg-christopher-benson-5

From the link above “Get a NOW TV Entertainment Pass today and because your friend introduced you, you’ll pay half price for the first 3 months (normally £6.99pm).”  Take a look…

The NOW TV Entertainment Pass has 13 channels not available on Freeview plus hundreds of box sets.  Click on the link above, spread the word – why not give Now TV’s Entertainment pass a try?  There’s also Movies and Sports Passes available at the click of a button.

Yes, Freeview is good – but Now TV is good, for a low cost each month. Only yesterday, I watched Buster Keaton’s 1920 short film One Week on Sky Arts On Demand – it was brilliant!

If you sign up, drop me a message in the comments below – and let me know what you think of the service.  Likewise, if you have any questions about what other apps you can receive via the Now TV box and what its capabilities are, message me and I’ll try and answer them.

Sport on Freeview Week Commencing September 5th 2015

Sport on Freeview Week Commencing September 5th 2015:

Hi, Chris here with this week’s Sport on Freeview update.  A big shout first of all to Freebird Events, I’m MC for their Sundowner Middle Distance Triathlon near York today – if you’re taking part, good luck!  Look out for me at the event.

http://www.freebirdevents.co.uk/sundowner-middle-distance-tri-2015/event-home/

Couple of quick news items that may be of interest:

Campion AFC:

http://www.thetelegraphandargus.co.uk/news/13642177.Amateur_football_team_from_Bradford_praised_for_setting_up_own_TV_channel/

Good article from my local paper – the football team praised for it’s media coverage – take a look at the club’s website, keep up the good work!

BT Showcase:

http://www.a516digital.com/2015/09/bt-showcasing-roma-v-barcelona-for-free.html

Roma v Barcelona confirmed as 2nd free Champions League game this season on Freeview.  It’s the first Matchday week (group stage) – not the greatest of matches, but I’m not surprised, it keeps the British matches on a ‘pay’ basis only.

Bowls:

http://www.co-operative.coop/corporate/press/press-releases/Funeralcare/co-operative-funeralcare-bowls-the-waterloo-handicap-back-onto-tv/

Yes, Bowls is coming to ITV4! Great to see more live sport coming to Freeview – we see some bowls tournaments on the BBC, but if ratings are good – maybe we’ll see more on ITV4.

Now TV

Friday lunchtime I popped to the nearby Tesco Express and picked up two tubs of Pringles. At £1.24 each, a bargain. Why two I hear you ask? Well, if you buy two tubs, there are codes inside to get a free Sky Sports Day Pass for Now TV (worth £6.99). So, until September 8th at Tesco’s, in theory you can get a Sky Sports Day Pass for £2.48 – after that the Pringles may go up in price…

A link to the offer is here:

Pro 12 Rugby

Pro 12 Rugby season started last night – although if you have Freeview Channel 601 you wouldn’t have known, they were showing Wheelchair Basketball instead.  Fair enough, but two games were shown on different BBC networks, both could have been shown after the Basketball, delayed – they could have even been shown today!  But nothing.

http://www.wheresthematch.com/rabodirect-pro12-on-tv/

This link is good – tells you which channels are showing the games – if they are S4C you watch them live through BBC Iplayer, the BBC games will be available via the BBC website and BBC Sport App if they’re not on Freeview Channel 601.  Checking the current listings for Friday September 11th – again two games on BBC networks but NO red button coverage again, not even delayed.

Is Rugby Union being neglected by the BBC?  Today (Saturday) BBC Wales is showing a warm up before the Rugby World Cup – Wales v Italy, but no coverage on Freeview.  Instead they are showing a loop of a 55 minute Sam Smith Radio 2 concert all afternoon.  Why show a repeat when they can show something live?!!  Surely that’s common sense!?!
