Hello all – welcome to another week on the blog, first of all – as they would say in Monty Python… “And Now For Something Completely Different”…

Talking Pictures TV

Not sport related – but this is brilliant news for Freeview and I wanted to share it!  Talking Pictures TV will launch on Freeview next Tuesday (September 22nd). Launching at 1pm – read on for more…

Here’s some of my personal highlights over the next couple of weeks:

Wednesday September 23rd 2015:

7:20am – Flockton Flyer.  Southern TV children’s TV series from 1976 – you may recognise Cassandra (actress Gwyneth Strong) from ‘Only Fools and Horses’!

9:20am – Tell Me Another.  Another Southern TV series – where celebrities give personal anecdotes.  This episode stars Thora Hird, Roy Hudd, George Melly and Warren Mitchell!

Thursday September 24th 2015:

6:00am – Down Amongst the Z Men.  Comedy starring The Goons from 1952!

Tuesday September 29th 2015:

10:35am – Where There’s a Will.  1955 film starring the late, great George Cole.

Saturday October 3rd 2015:

4:45am – All In Good Fun – Record this one, Bob Monkhouse with a 1956 compilation of slapstick comedy.

Many thanks to the Talking Pictures team, especially Sarah Cronin-Stanley, who kindly answered our questions we sent over.  We will ensure we keep in contact with Talking Pictures TV and inform you of upcoming programme highlights.

Chris: Tell us more about Talking Pictures TV – how did it all materialise?

Sarah: Talking Pictures TV was a dream of Renown Pictures, the rights holders to a large library of films from the 30’s onwards. To be able to screen ‘lost’ films and a home for B&W films without which would probably never see the light of day again – we are a very small family run company with a big dream.

Chris: You have a vast catalogue from the Southern TV archive – will we shows such as Runaround, Take a Letter Mr Jones, and maybe How anytime soon?

Sarah: Yes of course, we don’t own How though sadly.

Chris: Viewers can of course purchase the programmes shown, tell us how they can do this?

Sarah: Through our Freephone 0808 178 8212 or online www.renownfilms.co.uk

Chris: What are the long term plans for the channel – what do you hope to see in the future?

Sarah: Talking Pictures to become part of everyday viewing for families, so future generations can appreciate the history of film and enjoy.

Wendy Hiller plays the principled Salivation Army ‘Major Barbara’, in a script co~adapted for the screen by George Bernard Shaw himself. Michael Redgrave gives one of the performances of his career as the ridiculed and cuckolded Headmaster in Terence Rattigan’s touching drama ‘The Browning Version’;. and vintage old school telly graces the screens with a selection of much loved Episodes from the Southern TV Library. September also see debut screenings for a range of films from 1940s Hollywood, including the effortlessly urbane William Powell in the whimsical ‘Mr. Peabody and the Mermaid’, and the high~octane biopic of Tommy and Jimmy Dorsey. The legendary bandleaders play themselves in this rags to riches tale of brotherly rivalry.

FAQ

Can I get Talking Pictures on Freeview Where I live?

Enter your address into Freeview’s coverage checker to see if Talking Pictures TV is available in your area.

http://www.freeview.co.uk/availability

The Freeview coverage checker gives a good indication of whether you’ll be able to receive Freeview. However, do bear in mind that it is a prediction based on an area 100 square metres around your address.  There might be some homes in that area which cannot receive Freeview, because of the exact location of the property and other elements of your local geography, such as tall buildings, trees or hills.

When you buy a Freeview HD TV or other equipment, we recommend that you make sure that you can get a refund from your retailer if these local factors prevent you from receiving Freeview.

What Equipment do I need?

You might already have it.  Check if your television is labelled ‘Freeview HD’.   If it is not then you can buy a Freeview HD Recorder (set top box).  Freeview has a list of models available here:

http://www.freeview.co.uk/get-freeview#freeview-box-with-tv

You will also be able to receive the channel if you have Youview, if it does not appear try retuning your Youview box.

Do I need to retune?

Some televisions do not autotune.  If you are within coverage and the channel does not appear we recommend you try retuning your television or set top box.  Here is a link to some instructions on how to retune:

http://www.freeview.co.uk/when-to-re-tune

Will I need to change my aerial to get Freeview HD?

In most cases if you can already receive Freeview using your existing aerial, then it will be able to receive Freeview HD.   If you’re not sure, then your local aerial installer will be able to advise you.

Are the films on Talking Pictures shown in HD?

Although Talking Pictures is not broadcast in HD it is broadcast from the HD multiplex so you need  HD equipment to view it.
