The Road to the Australian Open

Andy Murray’s preparations for the Australian Open kick into first gear this week with Eurosport broadcasting LIVE tennis action from across the world.

Murray is bidding to become the first ever British champion Down Under later this month as the first grand slam of 2016 gets underway in Melbourne. The Scot has played and lost four Australian Open finals including a devastating defeat earlier this year to Novak Djokovic. Murray heads to the tournament as the world number two after overtaking Roger Federer in the rankings at the end of 2015. The British number one will team up with Heather Watson at the Hopman Cup while others attempt to find form at tournaments in Abu Dhabi, Doha and Brisbane.

3-8 January: LIVE Hopman Cup

Great Britain, spearheaded by Andy Murray and Heather Watson, will compete in the prestigious Hopman Cup in Perth this week.

This will be the pair’s second consecutive appearance at the annual tournament which features mixed teams playing in a nation versus nation basis after they played at the 2015 tournament. Teams are divided into two groups with group winners meeting in the final.

Last year Murray and Watson played in a group with Australia, France and Poland but were defeated by both European sides. It was Poland who claimed the title with Agnieszka Radwańska and Jerzy Janowicz defeating the United States team of Serena Williams and John Isner 2–1. They will not return to defend their title in 2016.

Group A includes Australia Green (Nick Kyrgios & TBC), Great Britain (Heather Watson & Andy Murray), German (Sabine Lisicki & Alexander Zverev) and France (Caroline Garcia & Gaël Monfils).

Group B features Australia Gold                (Casey Dellacqua & Lleyton Hewitt), Czech Republic (Lucie ŠafářováJiří Veselý), United States (Serena Williams & Jack Sock) and Ukraine (Elina Svitolina & Alexandr Dolgopolov).

Andy Murray won the tournament last season after world number one Novak Djokovic withdrew from the final due to illness. But while the Scot was denied a chance to play in the final he had already wowed crowds with a 6-2, 6-0 thrashing of Rafa Nadal in the semi-finals. Djokovic beat Stanislas Wawrinka in the last four before coming down with a fever.

Jeremy Bates, Simon Reed, Andrew Castle and Guy McCrea will be in the commentary booth for the tournament.

Those aforementioned players all participated in the 2015 tournament where Ferrer ran out as the eventual winner, beating Berdych 6-4, 7-5 in the final.

2 Jan: LIVE Cycling – Revolution Series

Olympic champion Peter Kennaugh and 26-time Tour de France stage winner Mark Cavendish will race at this month’s Revolution series round at the Manchester Velodrome.

The announcement that Cavendish will compete in round five of the Revolution is a clear indication that the Manxman is preparing himself for the track at the Olympics in Rio later in the year. He has been hoping to begin his preparations earlier in the year but a shoulder injury suffered at the Tour of Britain restricted him to just a couple of appearances, one being at the opening Revolution round in Derby.

Back-to-back British road champion Peter Kennaugh will also be in attendance alongside Team Sky team mate Ben Swift. Kennaugh was part of the GB team pursuit quartet that won 2012 World Championship gold, setting a new world record in the process, before also claiming gold alongside Ed Clancy, Geraint Thomas and Steven Burke in the event at London 2012.

Five-time Paralympic gold medallist Dame Sarah Storey will also feature at the Manchester Velodrome.

2-6 January: LIVE Ski Jumping – Four Hills Tournament

Eurosport will broadcast coverage from the final two rounds of the prestigious Four Hills tournament in Innsbruck and Bischofshofen this week.

Austria’s Stefan Kraft is the defending champion, winning the famous Four Hills title last season beating the likes of double-Olympic medallist Petr Prevc and compatriot Michael Haybock. Another athlete to look out for is German Olympic gold medallist Severin Freund, who won the overall world cup title last year.

Austrian jumpers have dominated the tournament in recent years, claiming eight consecutive victories including back-to-back wins for Gregor Schlierenzauer in the 2007-08 and 2008-09 seasons.

Commentary for the event comes in the form of Eurosport expert David Goldstrom

The Alpine Ski World Cup continues this week as Eurosport HD brings you LIVE action from the men’s and women’s slalom in Zagreb.

Last year, Austria’s Marcel Hirscher dominated proceedings in the slalom competition, topping the overall leaderboard ahead of Germany’s Felix Neureuther and Russia’s Aleksandr Khoroshilov. Hirscher is looking to become the first person in history to win five consecutive overall titles in the FIS Alpine Skiing World Cup. The home crowd will be looking forward to welcoming Alpine Skiing legend Ivica Kostelic, who became a fan-favourite after winning the overall title in 2011.

In the women’s competition, Michaela Schiffrin continues the defence of her slalom title on a course that has been favourable to her in the past. The American won here last year in dominant fashion, beating Kathrin Zettel of Austria and Nina Leseth of Norway into second and third place respectively.

LIVE Biathlon: IBU World Cup

Fri 7 Jan 1315-1500 LIVE men’s sprint on Eurosport 1 HD Sat 8 Jan 1330-1500 LIVE women’s sprint on Eurosport 1 HD

The IBU Biathlon World Cup continues this week with action from the fourth round in Oberhof, Germany.

Four-time World Cup overall winner Martin Fourcade showed his class at this round last year, winning both the 10km sprint event and the 15km mass-start event. However, his French team could do little about Russia’s performance in the 4×7.5km relay, where they went head-to-head with favourites Norway and beat them by just over two seconds, with France finishing in the bronze medal position nearly two and a half minutes down on the leaders.

Triple Olympic gold medallist Darya Domracheva was last season’s overall women’s champion and won the 12.5km mass-start event here in 2014. However, she is missing the season through illness and Finland’s Kaisa Mäkäräinen is one of the favourites to regain the title she won back in the 2013-14 season.

Mike Dixon and Patrick Winterton are Eurosport’s biathlon commentators for these rounds.

The 2015-16 FIS Cross-Country World Cup heads to German resort Oberstdorf and returns to Italian resort Toblach for rounds 12-14 of the season.

Marit Bjørgen was undefeated at these locations last year here as she triumphed in all three disciplines she attempted. The Norwegian was in a class of her own last season, winning over 50% of the races.

Martin Johnsrud Sundby was forced to settle for third place in the 10km C in Toblach last season but went on to claim his second consecutive overall title, impressing in long distance racing despite missing out on the distance title to Dario Cologna of Switzerland.

Mike Dixon is the commentator for these races.
