Sport on Freeview Week Commencing Jan 23rd 2016

Hello, welcome to this week’s blog.

There’s the Freeview Sport listings as always, on this main page, but may I draw your attention to my other pages (links at the top of the site), which will also be updated every Friday as well going forward:

Vinyl Revival – Each week, I’ll be reviewing an LP I’ve bought to play on my new record player.  Some old, some new, Herb Alpert, Tony Christie and Ken Dodd the first records I’ve reviewed!

Sports TV Rights – This will build up over time, a guide to where you can watch all of your favourite Sports.  If you think I’ve got something incorrect on this page, please do contact me.

MC/Compere Work – On here, you’ll find a list of the events you can see me at during 2016 and also my work to date.  Again, please feel free to contact me for more information.

BT Showcase – if it’s been on BT Showcase, or it’s going to be on BT Showcase (Freeview Channel 59), I will list it here – bookmark it, and keep checking for updates!

Chris’s Diaries – For a bit of fun, I’ve added a page, where I’ll post some of my diaries and memoirs from over the years.  Please let me know what you think!

As I say, sport listings will carry on – but just thought I’d add a couple of side pages to keep me busy.

The last-16 gets underway with many of the title contenders expected to be fighting for tournament glory. The second week in the 2015 edition saw Murray produce demanding performances against Nick Kyrgios and Thomas Berdych before losing in four sets to Novak Djokovic in the final. It was Murray’s fourth defeat in final of the Australian Open, more than any other player. Murray will be hoping to go one step further and add the title to his Grand Slam wins at the US Open and Wimbledon.

Serena Williams clinched last year’s title in what started a dominant year for the American as she went on to win the French Open and Wimbledon titles, notching a total of 21 Grand Slam titles.

Eurosport’s studio will be presented by Rob Curling with Greg Rusedksi, Virginia Wade and Miles Maclagan among the expert pundits. Simon Reed, Chris Bradnam and Jo Durie are among the commentary line-up.

The final round of the 2015-16 season takes place at the National Cycling Centre in Manchester where the Elite Championship and HOY Future Stars will be decided.

Team Wiggins took the lead in round five, but with Team Pedalsure and Maloja Pushbikers close behind, the scene is set for some excellent racing in the season finale.

The previous round featured a special GB vs Team Wiggins teams pursuit, which the latter won and put them in top of the standings in the Elite Championship. The quartet from Team Wiggins, Steven Burke, Owain Doull, Jon Dibben and Andy Tennant beat the GB team made up of Christ Latham, Ollie Wood, Kian Emadi and Mark Cavendish.

Tune into Eurosport 2 HD and enjoy LIVE coverage from the final round of the season.

Saturday 23 January

23-24 January: LIVE FIS Alpine Skiing World Cup – Kitzbuhel

This week’s action comes from Kitzbuhel, one of the most prestigious and challenging events on the Alpine Skiing World Cup calendar. It features the men’s combined, slalom and downhill events.

Eurosport expert Didier Cuche has been the master of the Kitzbuhel downhill in recent years, winning the event on four occasions in 2008, 2010, 2011 and 2012. This, along with his win back in 1998, makes him the most successful skier on the famous ‘Streif’ circuit.

Marcel Hirscher is the defending men’s overall champion; his overall title in 2014-15 ensured he became the first ever male skier to win four consecutive overall titles.

Defending giant slalom and overall champion Anna Fenninger will miss the entirety of the season due to a knee injury sustained in her pre-season. This opens the door for American duo Mikaela Schiffrin and Lindsey Vonn, who entered the year as favourites. Switzerland’s Lara Gut and Austria’s Eva-Maria will also be ones to watch in Kitzbuhel.

Competitors attempt to achieve the best time in four disciplines: slalom, giant slalom, super-G, and downhill. The fifth event, the combined, employs the downhill and slalom.

Saturday 23 January

10.45am-12.15pm Men’s downhill on Eurosport 2 HD

Sunday 24 January

09.30am-10.30am Men’s slalom first run on Eurosport 2 HD

12.30pm-01.30pm Men’s slalom second run on Eurosport 2 HD

25-31 January: LIVE ISU European Figure Skating Championships

The 2016 European Figure Skating Championships will be held at the Ondrej Nepela Arena in Bratislava, Slovakia. Medals will be awarded in the disciplines of men’s singles, ladies’ singles, pairs, and ice dancing.

British pair Penny Coomes and Nicholas Buckland will enter the competition targeting a medal after some promising performances this year. The duo endured a nightmare championship last year, scoring low in the short dance and eventually withdrawing from the free dance. Their main rivals will be reigning 2013 world and European champions Anna Cappellini and Luca Lanotte of Italy and reigning champions Gabrilla Papadakis and Guillaume Cizeron of France.

Javier Fernández of Spain will be looking to retain his title in the men’s singles event. Fernandez was the first Spanish skater to have ever won a medal at a major figure skating event. In the women’s singles event, Elizaveta Tuktamysheva will be the one to watch.
