So, BBC4 will become a Sports channel for just over two weeks in August.  So, no Top of the Pops for a fortnight 😦  Chris

Eurosport Player Help!

Hello all – one reader out there might be able to help.

I purchased a Chromecast last week off Ebay (a bargain at £17 including postage – ok, not the most recent model but it works!) – and have to say I’m really impressed with it, I’ve got some great apps working on there.  BT Sport for example, works brilliantly, as does Spotify and also BBC Iplayer Radio too.

I wanted to get Eurosport Player working on there – it’s meant to have official Chromecast functionality on it, but through my phone, when I log into my Eurosport account, there is no cast icon!?  The chromecast icon should appear on the right side, but not on my phone.  I’ve contacted Eurosport, they’ve kindly tested the app out at their side and can’t find a fault.  The phone I have is a Samsung Galaxy Core Prime, but I’ve also tried my account my sister in law’s Samsung Galaxy 4 and my brother’s I Phone – both have no cast icon.

Screenshot_2016-05-14-17-59-39

This is a shot from my phone – the Samsung Galaxy Core Prime.  The ‘Cast’ icon should appear below the three dots on the right of the screen, but it doesn’t.

The shot below is from a Galaxy 4… again no cast icon on my account…

Screenshot_Chromecast on Samsung Galaxy S4.png

This is the screenshot above that the Support team at Eurosport sent – showing the ‘Cast’ icon appears in their tests.  Help!!!

I know there’s another way round it – I could cast the screen and audio with the Google Cast app, but the picture is very jerky, and would be much better if I could cast to the official Eurosport Player Chromecast function.

Other things I’ve tried: Deleting and reinstalling the Eurosport Player app on my phone – made no difference.  Even tried installing it on my wife’s Samsung Galaxy Core Prime, just in case it was a problem with my phone, but no cast icon appears.

Can anyone help?  I would love to be able to watch the French Open Tennis through my TV, choosing which court I want to watch, etc.  I know I can watch on my phone, laptop but if I can get it working through my TV, it would be brilliant.  Leave a comment below with any suggestions!

Maybe one of you has Eurosport Player but can cast already!  All comments welcome!

Sport on Freeview W/C May 21st 2016

Welcome to this week’s blog.  Lots of great free sport – the French Open on ITV… David Haye live on Dave…  England’s pre-Euro 2016 games on ITV… see below for transmission times… Chris

Salford City:

Congratulations to Salford City who have been promoted to the National League North. You may have seen the brilliant BBC1 documentary ‘Class of 92’ – the good news is that a new series is in the pipeline.  But, did you know that you can catch FREE weekly highlights of Salford’s games throughout the season?  Whilst we have a bit of a football drought before the Euro 2016 games start, take a look at this link…and catch up with some of their games from this season.

This is the link to Salford’s You Tube page – with a vast collection of highlights and interviews. The highlights are made by a team of students from the University of Salford, they really do a terrific job.  I asked commentator Will Moorcroft a few questions about their coverage…

Chris

So you commentate on Salford games for You Tube – what’s the best game you have commentated on so far?

Will

Best one I’ve commentated on so far, would probably have to the play off final against Workington. The semi-final was great, and to be fair both Darlington games were… apart from the results!  Stourbridge and Stamford away were pretty exciting ones too.

Chris

Will coverage continue next year with Salford getting promotion?

Will

Coverage will definitely be carrying on, I’m missing it already even if the listeners aren’t missing my voice! Hoping to make a few improvements too so it will be continuous and get more people involved!

Chris

I studied Media Production at Salford – finished 13 years ago! How has the university been for you?

Will

University was amazing, the facilities are second to none and the staff and lecturers have been so supportive and helpful, and continue to be now I work alongside them, now it feels great to be creating opportunities like these for students.

Chris

So tell our readers when do matches normally get uploaded to You Tube (e.g if it’s a 3pm Saturday game when are highlights normally online)?

Will

We try to get them out the following evening… If there are any particularly good goals we’ll clip those up immediately as possible and get them out, like when Pooley scored against Southport, we got that out the same evening and it went viral/crazy!

Chris

Does your coverage include away games (if it does, you may well be on my doorstep next year – Bradford Park Avenue not far away from where I live!)
Will

Yeah, we started off just doing home games in the 2014/15 season, but last season covered all away games too; I think the only game we didn’t manage to get highlights out for was Whitby (h) because of the ridiculous weather conditions, the cameras weren’t able to work properly. The other new addition that came in this year was putting the real time commentary on the highlights instead of doing it afterwards, and I think I am allowed to say so myself but it is infinitely better than doing it post-match, a lot more reactive, up-to-date, and I hope exciting for people who watch / listen!

Chris

Thanks for the interview Will – I’d love to join you as a commentator one week!  People, listen up!  Subscribe to Salford City on You Tube today, that’s what I’ve done, easy to do – and catch all of the highlights so far, and for future games too!

Hello to Racing UK!

So, let’s say a warm welcome to Racing UK, which we’re going to start promoting and reviewing here at Sport on Freeview UK.  Racing UK is available on Freeview Channel 231 through TV’s which connect to the Internet (check for availability).

Channel 4 Racing are set to show 91 days of live Horse Racing coverage this year – and from next year, Channel 4 will pass over coverage to ITV.  So, from 2017, ITV will show a suggested 94 days of live coverage (with 34 days of those 94 being on its main channel and the remainder on ITV4).  But that leaves a lot of the year where there’s no coverage at all.  Racing UK has live action from 34 UK racecourses – all with in depth coverage and excellent commentary.

I’ll be doing a video review over the next few weeks – but right now, take a look at their website at http://www.racinguk.com/join – there’s plenty of ways to view, even if your Freeview TV doesn’t work with the service (Android App, Online on a Laptop or PC)…

If you’ve got any questions to ask Racing UK, please let me know too – we’d love your feedback.

Chris

Boxing on Dave – David Haye

Boxing on Dave (Full press release below)

UKTV’s leading free-to-air entertainment channel Dave has secured the exclusive UK rights for former two-weight world champion David Haye’s latest fight as he continues his comeback to the ring. ‘Haye Day’ will once again air on Dave, live from The O2 on Saturday 21 May.

A peak audience of 3.2 million people tuned into Dave in January to watch ‘The Hayemaker’ return to the ring for the first time in three and a half years and knock out Mark de Mori in 131 seconds. Haye, one of only two boxers to have unified the cruiserweight division and won the heavyweight world title, now turns his attention to Arnold ‘The Cobra’ Gjergjaj – the EE-EU heavyweight champion from Kosovo who is unbeaten in 29 fights (21 KOs). ‘The Cobra’ has real pedigree having sparred with some of the biggest names in boxing including current WBA, WBO and IBO heavyweight world champion, Tyson Fury, and the man he won those titles from, Wladimir Klitschko.

Also fighting on the Haye Day bill is former two-time world heavyweight champion Shannon Briggs, with the view to a showdown with David Haye later in the year if both are victorious. Nicknamed ‘The Cannon’, Briggs brings a wealth of experience with a record of 59 wins (52 KOs) and six loses. Briggs has been actively pursuing a fight with The Hayemaker for a number of months but will have to overcome former European heavyweight champion Alexander Dimitrenko, who boasts a record of 38 wins (24 KOs) and only two losses, in order to secure a future fight with Haye.

Haye Day will also see two Essex-based middleweights fight for the English title as ‘Smokin’ Joe Mullender takes on Lee ‘Banjo’ Markham over 10 rounds. The personal rivalry between the two hard hitting, all-action middleweights provides the ideal warm-up with neither fighter willing to taking a backward step in what promises to be a battle that goes the distance.

Commenting on the announcement, David Haye said, “I’m thrilled that my latest fight will once again be free-to-air on Dave. I was overwhelmed with the peak audience of 3.2 million who tuned in to my fight against Mark de Mori. Boxing is booming in the UK right now and these figures prove it. I always said I wanted to bring boxing back to the masses and in partnership with UKTV we really did do that in January.”

He adds,

I was really impressed with the coverage and production of my comeback fight and I’m looking forward to once again be fighting on Dave and taking the sport to a broader audience. This Haye Day will feature a longer live show with an even better undercard and more musical entertainment. It promises to once again be a must-watch event.”

The Hayemaker, who was the first British boxer to become a unified cruiserweight champion in 2008, as he won the WBA, WBO, and WBC titles, as well as The Ring magazine honour. Haye then moved up to heavyweight and won the WBA title in 2009 after defeating Russian giant Nikolai Valuev, making him only the second boxer in history to have unified the cruiserweight titles and won a heavyweight world championship.

Live Boxing: David Haye v Arnold Gjergjaj will be shown live from The O2 and has been ordered by UKTV director of commissioning Richard Watsham and Dave general manager Steve North. The three-hour special will include highlights from the night’s undercard at The O2, including Briggs versus Dimitrenko; a 10-round English middleweight title fight; Sheikh Fahad Bin Khalid Al Thani, a member of the ruling family of Qatar and the country’s first ever professional boxer, makes his debut plus all the action and insight from ringside and musical performances from a number of household names.

Richard Watsham said,

I’m thrilled that David wants to be back on Dave for his next fight, it speaks volumes about our relationships with top talent. We broke records for the channel back in January when David defeated Mark de Mori. I have no doubt that with the developing rivalry with Shannon Briggs adding extra tension, 21st May promises to be bigger, better and even more entertaining.”

Steve North added,

After the smash-hit first match we are delighted to welcome David back to the channel, and we are confident we can continue to build on the brilliant sporting coverage we delivered in January. The second Haye Day promises even more entertainment and even more boxing as we are able to offer more air time for fans to see boxing for free.”

‘Haye Day’ will be promoted by David’s own promotional company Hayemaker Boxing Ltd with support from The O2. Live Boxing: David Haye v Arnold Gjergjaj is produced for UKTV and executive produced by UKTV’s Helen Nightingale.

The announcement comes off the back of the recently announced BDO World Trophy Darts 2016, which airs on Dave the weekend following Haye Day, starting Saturday 28 May at 12 noon.

David Haye takes on Arnold Gjergjaj at The O2 on Saturday 21 May. For tickets to #HayeDay visit theo2.co.uk or watch the fight exclusively live on Dave. #HayeDay

Chris’s View: More sport on Dave confirmed!  The David Haye fight proved popular, and this fight will be just as popular.  Let’s hope this fight lasts a little longer than the 2 minutes 11 seconds earlier this year!

Frank Warren partners with UKTV to broadcast the BDO World Trophy live and exclusive from Lakeside

Hall of Fame boxing promoter Frank Warren is delighted to announce he has partnered with UKTV to deliver the British Darts Organisation (BDO) live television coverage for their annual ‘World Trophy’ event, that is set to take place over the May Bank Holiday weekend at the home of British darts, Lakeside Country Club.

The event will take place over three days on 28th, 29th and 30th May at the most iconic darts venue in the country, Lakeside, with 2016’s event boasting a huge £150k prize fund, which will incorporate £50k for a nine dart leg.

The UK’s biggest multichannel operator, UKTV, will broadcast ten hours of live coverage of the World Trophy each day on free to air entertainment channel Dave. Live Darts: BDO World Trophy 2016 will start daily at 12 midday. This further extends Dave’s live sport coverage, and follows the channel’s first live boxing event earlier this year when over three million viewers tuned in to watch David Haye knock out Mark de Mori.

A high spec production and bumper crowd will see the BDO’s biggest names, including reigning World Champions Scott Waites and Trina Gulliver MBE, along with the likes of Glen Durrant, Martin Adams, Scott Mitchell, Deta Hedman, Lisa Ashton, with wildcards for Jeff Smith, Andy Fordham and Ted Hankey. They will compete for the £150k on offer at the iconic Lakeside venue.

Frank Warren, said,

Though I have worked predominantly in boxing for nearly 40 years, I have also promoted and been involved in various other sports and entertainment ventures throughout my career. I am delighted to have been part of setting this event up and securing the BDO one of the UK’s leading broadcasters for the event. In my opinion, Dave is the perfect channel for the event and with it taking place at Lakeside, the iconic home of British darts, I am sure the atmosphere will be electric.

Richard Watsham, director of commissioning at UKTV said,

This is an exciting time for the BDO and I’m thrilled that we’re able to bring Dave viewers the BDO World Trophy, free to air and live from Lakeside, the home of world darts. This is an important step for Dave as we continue to expand into important new genres such as live sport.

Steve North, Dave general manager, said,

We are constantly looking for new opportunities and show ideas for Dave to keep our audiences entertained. After the incredible experience we had with the David Haye fight at the start of the year we are delighted to be delving further into the sporting world by partnering with the BDO in what is a fantastic opportunity to offer fans extended live coverage of the BDO World Trophy.

Sue Williams, Chairman of the BDO said,

“Our exciting new partnership with UKTV and Frank is certain to delight all of the BDO’s loyal members and fans. We look forward to working with Dave on the opening event of a new era for the BDO. The World Trophy is set to be an excellent few days of top level darts.

Live Darts: BDO World Trophy 2016 starts Saturday 28 May at 12 noon on Dave. #realdarts

Chris’s View: Great to see BDO Darts on the TV again – hopefully Dave will pick up some more tournaments, the Lakeside is a great Darts venue, and BDO has so many great characters and players.  PDC gets a lot of television coverage, and BDO should get coverage too.  The BBC has already said it will not be showing next year’s BDO World Championships in January at the Lakeside, so come on Dave!  Let’s keep the World Championships on Freeview!
