Sport on Freeview Up to/Inc Sept 2nd

Hello all…

Why is British Superbikes on Quest this Weekend?

Possible reason – On Sunday, Eurosport 1 has live coverage of Cycling’s ‘Vuelta a Espana’ (ITV4 has nightly highlights), whilst Eurosport 2 has Cricket, with Sri Lanka v Australia and their Third One Day International match. Discovery, who own Eurosport, own Quest also, therefore have made the British Superbikes available to watch.  On Monday, there is another scheduling clash – Eurosport 1 has the start of US Open Tennis, and Eurosport 2 has more ‘Vuelta a Espana’ Cycling.

Why is there Cricket on Quest this Wednesday?

On Wednesday, Eurosport 1 has US Open Tennis around the clock – with highlights and live coverage. Eurosport 2 has more ‘Vuelta a Espana’ Cycling.  Similar to the British Superbikes above, Quest is another channel available which can show sport, which cannot fit on Eurosport’s main channels.

Access All Areas Vinyl – Steve Hackett

DEMREC33_AAA_SteveHackett

And now, the first in an occasional series, where we will be reviewing recent vinyl releases…

Access All Areas is Demon Music Group’s superb new mid-price range featuring a wide array of the world’s biggest and most influential recording artists delivering full length, hit packed live sets from their prime 70s, 80s & 90s eras. The concerts were originally recorded for broadcast on ITV and released here for the first time, a catalogue housing the most superb live recordings in the artists’ history.

Demon Music Group (DMG) is the UK’s largest independent record company; specialising in the creative production and marketing of CDs, Digital Music and music DVDs.

Access All Areas – Steve Hackett (Vinyl Picture Disc)

  • Label: Access All Areas
  • Format: Vinyl LP
  • Date: 30/10/2015
  • Cat#: DEMREC33
  • Barcode: 5014797891050
  • Genre: Blues, Prog Rock, Rock

Ex-Genesis guitarist Hackett’s single-minded pursuit of excellence has inspired Eddie Van Halen, no less. And this 1990 show cherrypicks from the catalogue Steve established since leaving the band in 1977, choosing just one Genesis highlight, ‘In That Quiet Earth’. Solo standouts include ‘Please Don’t Touch’ and ‘Spectral Mornings’, title tracks of his second and third albums from 1978 and ‘79, while ‘Theatre Of Sleep’ would not appear on record until 1993. His band – Ian Ellis on bass, Julian Colbeck on keyboards and Fudge Smith on drums with brother John Hackett contributing flute, guitar and bass pedals – impress throughout.

We’ve hand-picked some of the hardest rocking and most sort after performances and cut them to limited edition heavyweight picture discs. Each record will be limited to 500 copies worldwide and feature the hits and soaring moments from the live recordings in these very special collectors items.

Demon Records & Access All Areas are excited to announce a special range of limited edition Picture Discs from the illustrious AAA catalogue.

Chris’s Review:

It’s Saturday morning – and whilst looking after the kids, it seems a perfect opportunity to sample this vinyl release of Mr Hackett. This is a pretty good concert – and the sound quality on the album is superb -the fact that it’s recorded live really comes across, even on my low-budget vinyl player. One thing I had to get used to when playing this vinyl is playing a picture disc!  It takes some getting used to on the eyes, but that aside – it’s a great set.  Never really listened to Hackett’s back catalogue before, so this was all new to me.  Camino Royale is a good track which is a great start to the show.  The concert was originally recorded for broadcast on ITV back in 1990 – the full concert is available on You Tube and is 62 minutes long.  Sadly, six songs have been edited out for the LP release – Depth Charge, Wonderpatch, In The Heart of the City, Horizons, Jacquzzi, and Clocks are available on the CD release but not here.  Well worth a look though – and keep an eye out for future reviews!  Chris

Champions League/Europa League this year (Updated)

Hello all, so just a reminder of where you can see Champions League and Europa League games for FREE this year.  BT Showcase on Freeview Channel 59.  Take a look at my link at the top of the page – it will tell you everything that’s been on the channel so far.  The link now includes a spreadsheet – detailing everything that’s been on BT Showcase since the channel was launched in the summer of 2015.  Any questions for BT please let me know and I will ask them!

Champions League:

BT have to show 12 live Champions League games including the final, and each British team taking part has to be shown at least once. As I write on August 20th, that should mean five out of the six group games that they will show on the channel will feature British teams.  Leicester City, Tottenham Hotspur, Arsenal are safe in the group stages, and Manchester City and Celtic got through the play-off round.  Leicester will play Club Brugge on BT Showcase on Wednesday September 14th.

Europa League:

BT have to show 14 live Europa League games including the final.  Manchester United and Southampton are safely through to the group stages.  So, 2 out of the 6 group games shown on BT Showcase will feature British teams.

So, out of a potential 12 group games in the Champions/Europa League, 7 of them will feature British teams.  Last season, BT Showcase didn’t screen British clubs on its free channel again until they had to – and that was when Liverpool reached the Europa League final.

Champions League group matches start on September 13th.  Chris

20 Aug – 11 Sep: LIVE Vuelta a Espana

Recently crowned Tour de France champion Chris Froome is set to reignite his rivalry with Alberto Contador and Nairo Quintana and the third and final Grand Tour of the season, la Vuelta a Espana. This week, Eurosport 1 will broadcast LIVE action from the opening week.

Team Sky’s Froome, who has raced four of the last five editions of the Spanish race, will be looking to claim his first red jersey after finishing runner-up on two occasions. In order to do so, he’ll have to take on rivals Contador and Quintana on some of the toughest climbs in world cycling. Contador, who was forced to retire through injury at the Tour de France, will enter the race as one of the favourites, having claimed the famous ‘maillot rojo’ on three occasions (2008, 2012, 2014).

The opening week of the race doesn’t conform to the usual format of a Grand Tour, with only one stage that favours the sprinters. After the opening stage team time-trial, riders will have to tackle a number of testing climbs including the ascent in to San Andrés de Teixido during stage four.

Last year’s race was one of the most exciting in recent history, with the top-four riders all finishing within two minutes of each other. Fourth place Quintana entered the race as favourite after finishing runner-up to Froome at the 2015 Tour de France. The compact climber had looked imperious in the French mountains, but couldn’t reignite the form he had shown earlier in the year. It was Astana’s Fabio Aru who claimed his first ever Grand Tour victory in impressive fashion, beating Joaquim Rodriguez and Rafal Majka in second and third respectively.

The route comprises of just one flat stage, 18 hill and mountain stages, one team time trial and one individual time trial.

Eurosport expert Carlton Kirby will be joined by 1988 Vuelta a Espana champion Sean Kelly in the commentary booth

21 & 24 August: LIVE Cricket: Sri Lanka vs Australia ODIs

Eurosport’s LIVE and exclusive coverage of Australia’s cricket tour of Sri Lanka continues this month with two One Day Internationals.

The first two of five ODIs will be played this week at the R. Premadasa Stadium in Columbo. A major talking point ahead of the series came with the news that Australia have dropped Glenn Maxwell, their ODI Player of the Year.

Maxwell posted his maiden ODI century the last time Australia played Sri Lanka in the World Cup in 2015. However, he has averaged under 10 runs in the last 10 ODIs and selectors announced they had decided to favour consistency for this series. All-rounder Moises Henriques and batsman Shaun Marsh come into the side that triumphed in their ODI tri-series against the West Indies earlier this year.

The hosts will call upon the experience of Lasith Malinga and Tillakaratne Dilshan as they bid to earn a memorable victory over the 2015 ODI World Cup winners.

Eurosport’s commentary team includes Russel Arnold, Roshan Abeysinghe, Brian Murgatroyd, Danny Morrison and Damien Martyn.
