Vinyl Revival – OMD Access All Areas

OMD – Access All Areas Vinyl Review

Thanks to Demon Records for sending this LP to review – I believe this is a concert from 1980 – recorded between the release of the band’s first two albums. It’s a short album, at just 22 minutes long!  Seven songs in total on the album – ‘Enola Gay’ is the populist song that will stand out, but I also like ‘Messages’, which I heard recently on BBC4’s repeats of ‘Top of the Pops’.  As for the quality – it’s a live recording of a 35 year old concert and bear that in mind, with live concert recordings recorded in 2016 there is obviously better equipment available.  The music does sound good, vocals not as polished as the studio recordings I’ve heard, but I did enjoy this concert.

I was 9 years old when I can remember not only hearing OMD for the first time, but seeing them perform in front of my very eyes! I was in the studio audience for BBC1 Saturday morning show ‘The 8:15 From Manchester’ in 1991 – and OMD performed two songs in the studio at Oxford Road, Manchester.  ‘Sailing on the Seven Seas’ was one of them, but the one that stayed with me was ‘Pandora’s Box’, both from their album of that year, Sugar Tax.  (‘Pandora’s Box’ still makes my hairs stand on end when I hear it even now).  But, even after that experience of seeing OMD, I didn’t go and delve into their back catalogue.  Only now, am I starting to do so.  ‘Souvenir’ is a song I’ve also discovered recently, how did it take me so long?!  Need to find Architecture and Morality on vinyl…

Vinyl Revival – Tony Bennett and Count Basie

Tony Bennett and Count Basie LP

This is a 1969 re-release of a 1959 album called ‘Strike Up The Band’, all of the original songs are there, but they’ve just been mixed up in a different order! It’s only 27 minutes in duration, but this is a truly amazing record.  Bennett works brilliantly with Basie’s big band…  with eleven tracks that are polished, and brilliantly performed.

If you’ve only heard Bennett’s big hits (‘I Left My Heart In San Francisco’), then this is worth a listen to expand your Bennett experience.   Bennett and Basie recorded two albums together in 1959 – this was released on Basie’s label and ‘In Person’ was released by Bennett’s record label, not a bad arrangement at all, I think I will have to track that album down too…  I know already that this album is going to get plenty of time on my vinyl player – thanks to my brother Phil Benson, who found it in a charity shop in Culcheth!

Whicker’s World… Back on DVD

By Craig Robert Whitfield.

Craig:

What does the name Alan Whicker mean to the Pokemon generation? Very little I suspect. Today, you might think about Simon Reeve and Michael Palin when considering TV globe trotters. They provide an insight into the history, culture and politics of many obvious and obscure countries and societies today. However, you can bet your bottom dollar that they would cite Alan Whicker as their inspiration. After all it was he who essentially created the concept of world travel documentary film making.

whicker-s-world-01-whicker.jpg

A perfect gentleman who wearing his famous  dark rimmed glasses and always sporting a smart blazer, shirt and tie created and set the standard. In some respects his outfits didn’t always fit the assignment but Alan maintained his identity by sticking to this formula. We should not forget his moustache which was equally part of the Whicker legend.

Whicker, always at ease treated his subject matter seriously and wasn’t afraid to ask those difficult, awkward and honest questions to those he interviewed.  It all started for Alan on the Tonight show filming shorts for the show. These were often informative and humourous but they didn’t extend beyond our island, was offered little air time and filmed always in black and white.

Later, after the Tonight show’s demise was born Whickers World, his very own show. In it’s early incarnation these were 30 minute documentaries which considered many subjects, and although he considered some subjects that again concentrated on these shores he was finally free to jump on a plane and travel to the New World. This early series made by Yorkshire TV set the tone for what was to follow later and for the first time we had the opportunity to see in Alan in colour and he made the most of this with his more colourful shirts.

From the 17 episodes viewed and available those such as Let’s Have an Airport, The Glorious Twelfth, The Most Beautiful Hotel in the World, Singles Inc and others have left their mark on me. Even if you just watch these 4 episodes you will see for yourself Alan  showcasing his spectrum of brilliance. From black and white to the transition to colour, humour to hard hitting journalism, support to cynicism it’s all there. This is TV documentary making in its infancy and yet the standard has as I write yet to be bettered.

Chris’s Summary:

Many thanks to Craig for the excellent review above.  When the DVD starts, the Yorkshire Television Chevron appears… with a monochrome shot of a plane taking off.  What else could it be apart from Alan Whicker.  I’m watching the first release of Network’s new chronological Alan Whicker releases, with the being to release every single episode Whicker made for ITV, in the original broadcast order.

The first episode starts not far from Yorkshire TV’s studios, just down the road at Leeds Bradford Airport (I work just five minutes away from the airport now!).  The first colour episode is ‘The Glorious Twelfh’ – with one of the first colour images being Whicker walking over the Yorkshire Moors in his infamous immacuate suit, this image stayed the same throughout his career.

Lancashire Hotpots – Now’t Like The 80’s Album Review

Lancashire Hotpots – Nowt Like The 80’s

28564.jpg

From time to time – as well as sport, I write up some music reviews too – here is one such review. Let me know what you think! Chris

You may have read my previous review for the last Lancashire Hotpots album, a country themed selection called ‘A Fistful of Scratchcards’ (have a look at the review, it’s in my archive posts)… well, now they’re back with an 80’s themed album and I’m here to give my thoughts on it.

There are some great tracks on this CD – Egg, Sausage, Chips and Beans is perhaps the catchiest tune on the album (and to the tune of Heads, Shoulders, Knees and Toes!). The tune will remind you of a Black Lace record, as it should, and you’ll still be singing it long after you’ve turned the record off. ‘It’s a Barmcake’ is another song in the vein of Black Lace, sounding very much like Agadoo – and just as catchy.

Another favourite of mine is ‘Don’t Put Your Nanna on the Internet’ which is a homage to the Chas and Dave ‘knees-up’ songs of the 80’s. I love Chas and Dave, and the Hotpots have done them proud with this.  You can tell that when the Hotpots are composing the tracks, that they really get down and listen to what the original songs sound like before “re-creating” them in their tracks.

‘Lancashire’s For Me’ is a great track too – look out for the video to this song on You Tube, which has Teletext images throughout the song to go with the lyrics. I miss Teletext, it’s all very well having the internet, but for years, we had Oracle and Ceefax, and we got by!

Dibnah, the final track, is a tribute to Bolton steeplejack Fred Dibnah and is poignant and really well constructed.  Where the other songs on the album provide amusement, Dibnah ends the album like no other Hotpots album before it.

Track Listing:

1. Last Can Blues

2. Do The Dad Dance

3. Egg, Sausage, Chips & Beans

4. Don’t Make the Polar Bears Cry

5. 6784

6. Black Friday

7. My Pianist

8. Fussy eater

9. It’s A Barmcake

10. Lancashire’s For Me

11. Stop In The Name Of Fudge

12. Dibnah (Album Version)

Give it a listen – buy it now at the official Lancashire Hotpots store https://hotpots.tmstor.es/

Sport on Freeview W/C Oct 15th 2016

Hello all, welcome to this week’s blog.  Highlight for me has to be the two live European games on BT Showcase (Man City on Wednesday and Man Utd on Thursday – check out Freeview Channel 59, details below).  Don’t forget to check out my BT Showcase page (see link at the top of the site).

There’s also the Snooker English Open final live on Quest, in full on Sunday.  (The first semi final is live on Quest, highlights of the second semi final will be shown tomorrow lunchtime).  I’ve enjoyed the Quest coverage of the Snooker – and I hope we’ll see the rest of the Home Nations Series on there.  Although, I’ll be avoiding the result on Sunday – with three kids, watching sport isn’t always easy!  So, i’ve recorded all of the Quest Snooker, and the plan is it will keep me going until the Champion of Champions on ITV4 and hopefully the Northern Irish Open on Quest, both in November.  I’ve just been taking my time with the English Open, and really getting into the matches, something I’ve not done for a while.
