Vinyl Review – Wishbone Ash

Wishbone Ash – Access All Areas

The twin lead guitar sound of Wishbone Ash influenced bands from Thin Lizzy to Iron Maiden and

beyond, their third album ‘Argus’ a Seventies classic. The year of 1987 saw a reunion of the original

Ash lineup and this 20th anniversary concert was staged at the Colston Hall, Bristol, two years later.

Drummer Steve Upton, bassist Martin Turner and guitarists Ted Turner and Andy Powell attack a

mix of well loved early tracks and new material with equal panache, celebrating the first

20 years of a British rock institution that continues today.

Vinyl Track Listing:

  1. Real Guitars Have Wings
  2. The King Will Come
  3. Why Don’t We
  4. Blowin’ Free
  5. Blind Eye
  6. Lady Whiskey
  7. Sometime World
  8. Phoenix
  9. Jailbait

The vinyl records, released by Demon Records has nine tracks; the CD has eleven tracks (Cosmic Jazz and Keeper of the Light are missing from the vinyl version).

There is also the original video footage of this concert available to watch on You Tube – this has been uploaded by Demon Music Group and is 51 minutes long in total, originally recorded for transmission on ITV circa 1989.

I’ll be honest, I hadn’t heard any Wishbone Ash previously and I wasn’t expecting to like this album.  How wrong I was.  Phoenix was one of my favourites – but a short track, could have been so much longer.  Blowin’ Free and ‘Why Don’t We’ are really strong, lively numbers – these stand out for me.  Guitars sound fantastic on the recording – it’s a record to turn the volume up for!

Having heard this live concert, I’m going to have to try some of Wishbone Ash’s studio catalogue, it might sound completely different and I might not like that, but this concert is strong enough to make me want to hear more.

I played this LP on a cold November Friday afternoon – my 3 year daughter loved it too, dancing around, rocking away throughout!  See Chris, you may be 34, but plenty still to discover out there.

My LP of Wishbone Ash – Access All Areas was complimentary but all views are my own.

A big THANK YOU!!!

Hello all,

Just wanted to say a massive THANK YOU for your continuous support with my blog.  This month has been the most popular ever – over 2500 views, compare that to January this year, with just over 400!

Keep spreading the word – I hope you like the site.

Sport will of course continue to be a big part of it, as it should, but I hope you like the other features I’m adding to (the Whisky review has been unbelievably popular, as was my ‘Beers in Bradford’ article a couple of months ago!).  Paul Coates-Black also wrote some fantastic vinyl reviews for us too.  And, over the weekend, I’ll be writing about a road trip I’m heading on tonight – watch this space!

Thanks again,

14.55 RYGBI PAWB – YSGOL Y BONTFAEN V COLEG SIR GÂR, kick off 15.00, live from Sardis Road, Pontypridd.

Today’s live online rugby match from the WRU Wednesday Under 18 Cup competition is Cowbridge High School v Coleg Sir Gâr. Commentary: Wyn Gruffydd. Web broadcast starts at 14.55 on

Highlights at 22.00 on S4C, with Owain Gwynedd and commentary from Wyn Gruffydd. (EC) (S)

17.00 CLWB RYGBI RHYNGWLADOL: GEMAU’R HYDREF – CYMRU v DE AFFRICA, kick off 17.30, live from the Principality Stadium.

Live coverage as Wales welcome South Africa to the Principality Stadium in the fourth and final match of the 2016 Under Armour Autumn International Series. Although Wales have beaten Argentina and Japan in the two previous weekends, this Autumn series has been far from flawless for Rob Howley’s side. However victory over an out-of-sorts South Africa side would surely end the campaign on a positive note. The Springboks have lost both of their Autumn matches to date, against England and Italy, but they will be desperate to avoid a clean sweep of losses when they visit Cardiff. Gareth Rhys Owen leads coverage, with Gareth Charles and former Wales captain Gwyn Jones in the commentary box. Kick off is at 17.30.

15.15 CLWB RYGBI: NEWPORT GWENT DRAGONS V EDINBURGH, kick off 15.30, live from Rodney Parade.

Clwb Rygbi returns as Guinness PRO12 action resumes following a fortnight of Anglo-Welsh Cup matches. Having seen off reigning champions Connacht 21-16 in their last league outing earlier this month, the Newport Gwent Dragons will be hopeful of picking up where they left off against Edinburgh. Similar to the Dragons, the Scottish visitors have had a mixed season to date but visit Rodney Parade in good spirits after defeating title contenders Ulster 28-17 last time out. Gareth Rhys Owen will be joined in the studio by former Welsh international brothers Nicky and Jamie Robinson, while Gareth Charles and Gwyn Jones are in the commentary box. English soundtrack available via the red button on Sky, Freeview or Virgin Media. Freesat viewers should use the audio selection option. Kick off is at 15.30. (EC) (S)

PLUS on Clwb2, Dylan Ebenezer reviews Wales’ game against South Africa. There are highlights of all the Principality Premiership rugby games and in football we take a look at Wrexham against Forest Green from the Racecourse. Plus, Met Cardiff’s women’s basketball team take on Oakland in Cyncoed and the Cardiff Devils are away to Coventry. The programme gets underway at 17.45 on Sunday 27 November. (S)

AND a round-up of La Liga and Dafabet Welsh Premier League action on Sgorio, at 18.30 on Monday 28 November.

AND a chance to re-live all 80 minutes of the Ospreys’ Guinness PRO12 to trip to Glasgow, on Clwb Rygbi, at 22.00 on Monday 28 November. (EC)

Whisky Review – Glen Marnoch 28 Year (Aldi)

Time for a new idea on – and thanks to Aldi, I have a new whisky to sample and give feedback on.  You may well be after a Christmas present idea for someone, or you might just fancy treating yourself – either way, please do let me know what you think of the review below.. and hopefully more to come!  Chris

Update – December 10th 2016.  Thanks to Aldi we’ll be reviewing some Premium French Vodka and some Advocaat over the coming days – keep coming back to the site for more details!

6. Glen Marnoch 28 Year Old Single Malt Whisky.jpg

Glen Marnoch 28 Year Old Single Malt Whisky

£39.99 per bottle

Available now in Aldi stores

This whisky has rich aromas of zesty marmalade, oak tannin, fresh ground coffee and spice. The taste is full bodied with oaky sherry notes and a subtle hint of smoke.

Let’s first of all go back to 1988 – the year I bought Now 13 (with hits such as The Only Way is Up by Yazz!).  Scott and Charlene got married in Neighbours (I was so jealous – I thought Kylie Minogue was going to marry me!)… and at the cinema there was Die Hard, and Who Framed Roger Rabbit?

28 years ago – I was a mere 7 years old!  And that is how old this Glen Marnoch whisky is from Aldi, priced at £39.99 (which for a 28 year old, is an absolute steal).

Take a look here at which shows similar aged whiskies…

So, to think you can pick one up on the shelf at the supermarket is exciting news indeed.  We don’t know much about Glen Marnoch – we know that there’s already a couple of other Glen Marnoch products available in Aldi, we know this 28 year old whisky is 43.4% ABV, and like the other Glen Marnoch products, we don’t know the exact origin/provider…. Aldi are sworn to secrecy.

So, is the 28 year old offering any good?  In a nutshell – yes.  It’s a lovely winter’s evening drink.  It’s a strong, heavy whisky; the smell reminded me very much of a cognac-type smell, quite smoky.  But it goes down a treat – warming you up instantly.  And to further enhance the experience, I enjoyed a warm mince pie with it – a perfect companion.

Aldi’s advice is the whisky is “best served on the rocks”, but I sampled this neat first, and it was pleasurable without diluting it.  I then added a couple of blocks of ice to accompany it, which did bring out even more of the flavour.

I called into my local Aldi store last Monday to see if there was a bottle available – and they’d sold out – my advice, go and hunt one down now, before it’s too late!  Aldi said it’s  “…a delicious winter drink to share with friends”, well I don’t know about that – my friends and family will have to be quick to try it, otherwise the bottle might just have evaporated 😉

So, if you’re after a bottle of whisky for Christmas – write to Santa and ask for this offering.  Santa might not bring it you though – he’ll probably keep the bottle for himself!

My sample of Glen Marnoch 28 Year Old Whisky was complimentary but all views are my own.

Vinyl Review – Pipes of Peace

Paul McCartney – Pipes of Peace

By Chris Benson

I’ve literally picked up this album again (off Ebay) and it’s a cracker.  A special edition has been released on vinyl in recent years, but this is the original 1983 version, without any bonus tracks.

I first heard the album eleven years ago after my good friend Craig recommended it to me.  The LP starts with the title track ‘Pipes of Peace’ (a great Christmas song, often forgotten about), then into the first McCartney/Jackson duet on the record (‘Say Say Say’) which entered the singles charts.  For the record, I prefer their other duet, on Side B – ‘The Man’… the two of course reunited to sing ‘The Girl is Mine’ on Jackson’s ‘Thriller’ album.

‘Keep Under Cover’ is another great tune – again confined to an album where only the privileged few will discover it.  ‘Average Person’ another of my favourites.

I can’t believe this album is 33 years old – but, it is!  It wasn’t to everyone’s taste at the time of release – Rolling Stone Magazine gave it just 2 out of 5, but that’s harsh.  McCartney’s trying different styles with this album, it doesn’t feel like an album that’s just ticking boxes and going through the motions.

Now, time to look for more vintage McCartney on Ebay me thinks… I wouldn’t mind picking up ‘Flowers in the Dirt’ for example – that’s another great album from McCartney’s solo catalogue.
