T Rex – The Slider Vinyl Review

March 12th 2017 – and I’m reviewing ‘The Slider’ whilst prepping Sunday lunch for our family. The album has been released on 180g vinyl by Demon Records, and this I quickly note, is a limited edition release – so grab a copy whilst you can.

First thing I learnt – the photo on the front cover – the sleeve notes tell me the picture was taken by Ringo Starr. I love useless trivia like that, could well come up in a quiz one day.
The album kicks off with ‘Metal Guru’ – which sounds as if it could be been recorded yesterday, but unbelievably it’s 45 years old now! ‘Telegram Sam’ is another recognisable hit on this album.

Snooker Celebration at the Crucible

Please see attached press release from World Snooker.  Sounds like a fantastic event, and all for a great cause.  Chris

Six time World Snooker Champion Steve Davis is urging fans in the Sheffield area not to miss next month’s special show at the Crucible.

The 40th Anniversary Celebration of Sheffield’s World Snooker Championship will take place at the Crucible on Friday April 14th, starting at 6pm. Former World Champions and all of the players competing in the 2017 tournament have been invited, so there will be many famous faces among the crowd.

The show will be a mixture of live interviews with these green baize greats, and archive footage of the most memorable moments of the past four decades of snooker’s biggest tournament.

“It’s going to be a wonderful occasion,” said Davis, who retired from pro snooker last year, having won the World title in 1981, 83, 84, 87, 88 and 89. “It’s amazing to think we have been at the Crucible for 40 years – there have been so many special moments. This is the perfect way to celebrate four decades of snooker in Sheffield.

“Snooker’s relationship with the Crucible has always been quite unique and magical. I’m delighted that we’re staying in Sheffield for at least another ten years. But it’s something that local people should never take for granted. And now here’s the chance to see what will be a fabulous tribute to the past 40 years.”

Staged by World Snooker and Sheffield City Council, this show is a unique opportunity for fans to celebrate the sport and see the top stars in the flesh.

Book fast – tickets for this unique occasion will cost just £20. A donation from the ticket sales will be made to Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice.

How Can I Receive Front Runner?
Several people have asked me why they can’t receive sports channel Front Runner on Freeview Channel 91. Basically it’s because the channel is only available if you can receive Freeview HD channels. Front Runner isn’t a HD channel, but in simple terms, it uses left over broadcasting space from the HD channels.
So, if your current TV or set top box isn’t HD compatible, then you won’t be able to view it. A lot of older TV sets and set top boxes won’t be able to view this channel. If you have a HD ready TV, this might not be good enough – you need a TV with built in Freeview HD.
One cheap solution is here – https://www.amazon.co.uk/Bush-Freeview-Digital-Set-Top/dp/B00B8GMAC6/ref=sr_1_6?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1489744514&sr=1-6&keywords=freeview+hd+set+top+box – and at £25, would give you the facility to watch Front Runner as well as movie channel Talking Pictures TV, which is another great channel hidden away. Note – this is a set top box, and if you want to reliably record Front Runner, you could look for a more costly option, such as a recordable hard drive. At least with this cheaper option though, you can watch all of the free channels available, not forgetting the HD channels available too.
Is it worth £25 above for the extra channels? I think so – Talking Pictures has a great library of archive British films, and Front Runner is acquiring more and more sport including motorsport and darts. There’s also Vintage TV, a great music channel which is only available if you can receive the Freeview HD channels. And, one you have a compatible TV or set top box, there’s no subscription – it’s free after that.
Can everyone view the Freeview HD channels?
No, around 75% of the UK can now receive them, but only if they have the right equipment. Check this link before purchasing – https://www.freeview.co.uk/channels-at-your-address and if Front Runner appears, then you can receive them.

Going forward, highlights from Front Runner’s TV listings, as well as Sport on S4c, and BT Showcase on Freeview Channel 59 will appear within our main channel listings below.  I hope this helps!  Please let me know what you think! I also host a show on internet radio station Live Sports FM – their programmes are listed below too, within the main guide.  Pay per view channels now feature at the end of the article.  Chris

Chris’s Weekend Feature – Stardust Audio CD Review
‘Stardust’ by Neil Gaiman has indeed been adapted into a big-budget Hollywood movie in recent years, but in December, BBC Radio 4 transmitted a two part adaption with an all star cast, including Maggie Steed, Sanjeev Bhaskar and Sophie Rundle (and there’s cameos from the author himself!).  There’s also an appearance from singer Tori Amos!

Having not seen the 2007 movie or read the book, this was my first experience of the Neil Gaiman novel. So what’s it all about? This synopsis from the BBC Radio 4 Stardust page, gives you a tease of the complex plot that unravels…

Challenged to retrieve a fallen star by the beautiful Victoria Forester, to whom he has lost his heart, Tristran Thorn leaves his home in the sleepy English village of Wall and crosses into the mysterious and magical land of Faerie. But when Tristran locates the fallen star he discovers it is no mere meteorite, but an injured young woman, Yvaine.

Tristran, however, is not the only person to have seen and be in pursuit of the fallen star. Deep in Faerie, Morwanneg the witch queen, is also hunting the star, whose heart she plans to cut out to restore youth to herself and her sisters.
High on Mount Huon, Primus, Tertius and Septimus, the three living heirs to the realm of Stormhold, seek out the star to claim the right to their recently deceased father’s kingdom, and each will stop at nothing – not even murder – to ensure they are the only brother left in the running for the throne!
With Yvaine’s life in danger, she and Tristran find themselves embarking on an extraordinary adventure, full of danger and intrigue as they flee across Faerie. Encountering Little Hairy Men, witches, and lightning-hunting sky pirates along the way, Tristran is about to uncover the secret to his own identity and a fate beyond his wildest dreams at his journey’s end.

At 2 ½ hours duration, it’s a great adaptation, that keeps you hooked until the very end.  A great plot… the story really comes to life in this drama.  Brilliant narration from Eleanor Bron – if I didn’t keep up with a scene, the narrative brings me back where I should be!  Directed by Dirk Maggs and Heather Larmour – Dirk directed radio versions of ‘The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy’, ‘Batman’ and ‘Superman’ – so an excellent CV, and this just adds to it.

And, I’ve been listening to the CD in two different cars – hopping to and from work.  The CD’s have easy to access navigation points, with ten chapters on each disc so you can easily find the place that you’re ready to listen to.

I think I might have to read or listen to more Neil Gaiman – there’s plenty out there, and I like what I heard!  Check out Gaiman’s other novels – there’s ‘Neverwhere’, ‘Smoke and Mirrors’, ‘Fragile Things’ and ‘American Gods’ amongst others.  Chris

More Snooker on Freeview! China Open!

Many thanks to Eurosport and Quest for sending me details of this exciting news – spread the word!  Full press release below.  Great news for snooker fans – we now have the Home Nations and the China Open on Quest, a great selection of tournaments on BBC and ITV4 too.  Chris

snooker-on-quest

Quest and Eurosport will be simulcasting all live sessions of World Snooker’s China Open from Monday 27 March until Sunday 2 April 2017.  This is the first time that Quest will air this tournament and adds to the growing snooker inventory that kicked off with the Home Nations series in 2016.

The China Open is the longest-running world ranking snooker event staged in China, dating back to 2005 and was won by Ding Junhui, aged just 18, beating Stephen Hendry.  This proved to be a catalyst for the explosion of interest in snooker, which paved the way to make it one of the country’s most popular sports.  The tournament brings snooker’s elite to the Chinese capital to compete for the iconic gold shield.  Last year saw Judd Trump claim his second China Open title with a dominant 10-4 victory over Ricky Walden. This year’s prize pots totals an impressive £510,000 with the winner pocketing a generous £85,000. The tournament is the penultimate ranking event prior to the season-ending World Championship – the pinnacle of the snooker season.

Quest and Eurosport will be broadcasting every session all week, however Quest will air the final’s concluding session exclusively LIVE at 1230pm on Sunday 2nd April. Eurosport 2 will show full final highlights at 6pm. Commentary comes from 1986 World Champion Joe Johnson, former world number six Mike Hallett, David Hendon and Phillip Studd.

Live coverage: Mon 27 March – Sunday 2 April

1st session: 7am – 10am (except Monday which will start 7.30am)

2nd session: 12.30pm – 3.30pm

Daily highlights:

6pm on Eurosport 2 HD & 10pm on Eurosport 1 HD

Quest is available on Freeview (Ch 37), Sky (Ch 144) & Virgin Media (Ch 172)

Eurosport 1 and Eurosport 2 are available on Sky, BT TV, Virgin Media and Virgin Media Ireland

Status Quo – Back on Vinyl (Part 3)

You may have seen Parts 1 and 2 of our Status Quo vinyl reviews – here’s a chance to take a look at Part 3.  Look out for more vinyl reviews right here – as well as the usual sport etc, all on http://www.sportonfreeviewuk.wordpress.com

The Party Ain’t Over Yet Vinyl Review

2005… and Status Quo hit the cobbles of the infamous Coronation Street!  All around the time of the release of ‘The Party Ain’t Over Yet’, Quo’s 27th studio album, now available in a fantastic 2 LP set from Demon Records, with brilliant yellow discs which look great.

5273.jpg

‘The Party Ain’t Over Yet’ is the first track, and one of the singles from the LP, and it had a great run in the UK charts, reaching number 11!  I like it, it’s classic Quo, as is Track 2, ‘Gotta Get Up and Go’.  One of my other favourites from LP1 is ‘Bellavista Man’.  ‘All That Counts is Love’ was the second single from the album, reaching number 29 in the charts and is also on LP1.

Twelve years on, the album sounds even better than on its first release.  I perhaps didn’t give it the respect it deserved and was perhaps critical when the album first came out, but those opinions were unfair.  I think the main reason for that was because I was comparing the album to Quo’s 2002 release ‘Heavy Traffic’ – which for me, is up there as one of their best.  And, with any film or book sequel, or television follow-on, it’s human nature to draw comparisons.

Side 2 on LP1 is an absolute cracker.  Rick Parfitt stands out on vocals on ‘Familiar Blues’ and ‘Bellavista Man’.  There may be only 3-4 tracks per side, so a lot of getting up to turn over the record – but the sound quality on this Demon vinyl release makes this worthwhile, it’s outstanding.

Aldi Pinot Noir Put to the Test!

Time for another Aldi review – and this time I had two Pinot Noir offerings…  and what better occasion to try them, than my son Arthur’s first birthday?  Why the heck not?!

I first became aware of Pinot Noir back in 2005/2006 – when me, and my good friends Craig Whitfield and Alan Travers discovered a Romanian offering called ‘Prahova Valley’.  It was superb – ignore the fact that it was always one of the cheapest in store at Asda, it was fantastic.  Sadly, the wines from Prahova Valley have long disapperared from the supermarkets – Waitrose appearently sell a Romanian Pinot Noir online, but I’ve yet to see whether this compares to my old favourite.

Now, back to 2017 for the Aldi Pinot Noir selection.

Firstly, as well as myself I have to politely thank my father in law John, and also my sister in law Sarah for helping me sample these, and like my previous review of the Glen Marnoch whiskies (please check it out, well worth a look!), we have rated the wines out of 10, putting all our individual thoughts about the drink together as one score.

First up was the Aldi New Zealand ‘Exquisite Collection’ Pinot Noir, priced at just £6.99.  It’s 13% ABV and is described as “medium to full bodied” on Aldi’s website, I thought it was quite light.  Aldi say it’s “…Beautifully fragrant with ripe cherries, fleshy raspberries, and red-fruited plum flavours.”  This wine was John’s favourite – and overall, between the three of us, it scored 20 out of 30.  (Picture below courtesy of Aldi).

Next up was the Vignobles Roussellet Pinot Noir, priced at just £4.49 a bottle.  I thought this was heavier than the New Zealand offering, certainly darker in appearance.  And… I genuinely loved it, really fruity, scoring it a staggering 9 out of 10.  Aldi say “…this French Pinot Noir has rich red fruit aromas and lush berry flavours.”   And… like the New Zealand offering, between the three of us, it also scored 20 out of 30!  We have a draw people!

What do you do when it’s a draw?  In football, they’d decide the winner with a penalty shoot out!  Anyway, let me know if you try either of these – but for me, I’d certainly go and hunt down the Vignobles Roussellet.  At £4.49, how can you possibly leave it on the shelf?
