Snooker Coming to Barnsley!

Barnsley To Host Snooker’s English Open

Barnsley will stage a World Snooker ranking tournament for the first time in October when the English Open comes to the town.

The event will run from October 16 to 22 at the Barnsley Metrodome with 128 of the world’s best players in action, and tickets are on sale now.

The tournament was new to the calendar last season and staged in Manchester, with China’s Liang Wenbo beating Judd Trump in the final. Top stars including Ronnie O’Sullivan, Mark Selby, John Higgins, Neil Robertson and Shaun Murphy also competed for the Steve Davis Trophy.

And now it moves to South Yorkshire with a stellar field of the sport’s top players expected to enter and battle for the title. The English Open, televised live by Eurosport, is the first of the season’s Home Nations series and carries a top prize of £70,000.

And any player winning all four Home Nations events will also earn a massive £1 million bonus. So the champion in Barnsley will head to the next event in Belfast dreaming of that unprecedented prize.

World Snooker Chairman Barry Hearn said: “We are delighted to bring a ranking tournament to Barnsley for the first time. We have staged various qualifying events at the Metrodome in recent years and we are sure it will prove an excellent venue.

“We know what fantastic support there is for snooker in the Yorkshire region, the county is very much a global centre for our sport as it also hosts the World Championship in Sheffield and the UK Championship in York. So we expect to see fans come out in their droves to support the English Open in Barnsley and make sure it stays in their town.

“With 128 players in action it really is an incredible chance to see so many of your heroes for the price of a single ticket, with value for money that you won’t see anywhere else in sport. Seats will sell fast though so get them booked quickly.”

Take advantage of a SPECIAL OPENING OFFER with all-day tickets to the first four days of the tournament costing just £10 each! This gives fans the chance to see a wide range of players on multiple tables throughout the day. This offer will not last long and is subject to availability. All-day tickets for the final cost £55 and they are expected to sell out rapidly.

Book tickets fast – call 0871 620 7052 (calls cost 13p per minute plus the network access charge) or visit www.worldsnooker.com/tickets

Cricket Back on the BBC!

Chris: Great that live cricket will be returning to the BBC!  We’ve been lucky enough to see live Big Bash Cricket on Channel Five, but this means live England Cricket – and for five years too.  Hopefully it will bring more fans to the game.

From the BBC Media Centre:
The BBC and ECB today announced a new five-year, strategic partnership that brings live cricket back to BBC TV for the first time in 21 years.

The deal, which runs from 2020 to 2024, sees the nation’s favourite broadcaster become the exclusive, free to air home for cricket. The BBC runs the most popular TV, radio and digital sports services in the UK, and cricket will take centre stage across all platforms to ensure the sport reaches the widest possible audience.

The deal involves live TV coverage of two England men’s international T20 matches, one England women’s T20 international, plus live TV coverage of 10 men’s matches from the ECB’s New T20 competition, and up to eight live matches from the women’s T20 tournament including both Finals.

The BBC will also broadcast primetime TV highlights of England men’s home international matches. In total, there will be over 100 hours of cricket back on BBC TV from 2020.

Director General Tony Hall says: “The BBC is delighted and the public will be too. It’s long been our ambition to bring live cricket back to BBC television. I’m thrilled to see that ambition realised. Cricket is an integral part of the British summer and the BBC will be putting its full weight behind the nation’s favourite summer sport.

“Our aim will be to make the new T20 competition a huge success. Existing cricket fans – and the millions more who will discover a new love of cricket – have a huge amount to look forward to.”

In addition, the BBC has retained exclusive, live national radio rights to English cricket, a fitting way to celebrate Test Match Special’s 60th birthday this year. The iconic and much-loved TMS will continue to deliver ball-by-ball commentary of all England men’s internationals alongside an expanded commitment to the women’s game.

The BBC has also re-secured an extensive package of digital clip rights to the English cricketing summer building on a service viewed more than 30 million times last year. Live audio commentaries from every match of the County cricket season will also be available on the BBC Sport website – almost 4,000 hours per year.

Since its introduction by the ECB in 2003, T20 cricket has spread around the globe. The fast-paced thrill of the short-form game coupled with the BBC’s wealth of experience in showcasing major sporting events ensures cricket fans can look forward to an innovative, fresh and exciting new viewing experience. The BBC’s coverage will have great cricket at the heart of great entertainment.

Barbara Slater, Director of BBC Sport, says: “This will lead to a step change in the BBC’s coverage of cricket across TV, radio and digital platforms. We are extremely excited about what we have to offer by taking cricket to the widest possible audience and inspiring the next generation to pick up bat and ball. With 97 percent of the UK population using the BBC every week, the potential for growing the game further is huge.”

Tom Harrison, Chief Executive Officer of ECB, says: “BBC are valuable long-term partners, bringing cricket to listeners, viewers and a new digital audience. We are delighted they will go to another level with live coverage of International and domestic T20 – men’s and women’s – alongside prime-time highlights shows and a commitment to taking the game to even wider audiences.”

Last year the BBC accounted for a market-leading 41 percent of TV sports audiences bringing the nation together around the biggest sporting events. International cricket will join an extensive sporting portfolio that includes the Olympic Games, the World Cup, European Football Championships, Match of the Day, Wimbledon, the FA Cup and the 6 Nations.

Aldi Prosecco Reviewed!

Now time to review Aldi’s Prosecco…  three in one!

Organic Prosecco – £7.99

Aldi say its “…Eco-friendly fizz sourced from the Corvezzo family’s 150-hectare estate, 30km north-east of Venice. Grown with no pesticides or herbicides used in the vineyard, the grapes are predominately hand picked and gently pressed to ensure only the highest quality of juice is used. The winery is also committed to using renewable energy wherever possible.”  Wasn’t my favourite in truth… read on to find my Aldi prosecco of choice…

Valdobbiadene Prosecco Spumante – £7.99

Light and refreshing with pleasing bubbles, attractive autumn fruits and delicate floral touches. Good acidity and a light creamy flavour. This is a stylish and gloriously attractive Italian sparkler.

Decided to get this prosecco tested during a party at our house earlier this year.  As for scores on this one, this came out on top out of the three!  I gave it a 6 out of 10, it had plenty of bubbles, and for me, it had a nice taste to it.  The lowest score out of the five testers was 6 out of 10, the highest score was 7 1/2 – 33 out of 50 in total.  But, for less than £8, it’s great for any celebration – and certainly good value.  Problem is, we soon had an empty bottle!

Belletti Prosecco Spumante – £5.79

Aldi say “…it’s the ideal partner for refined appetizers and delicate fish, white meats and fresh cheese dishes. Citrus fruit and flowery features characterise this wine’s scent.”

Again, my favourite was the Valdobbiadene Prosecco Spumante – but, for less than £6, this would be attractive for the price.  For a couple of pounds more, I would upgrade and buy the Valdobbiadene, but let me know if you think differently!

Once again, thanks to Aldi for the samples – my comments are my own… if you like the reviews, please let me know.  Bottles available in Aldi stores – stocks permitting.  Chris

Sykes – Complete Series DVD Review

Sykes – The Complete Series DVD Review

Released Monday June 26th 2017

sykes
And now, courtesy of Network DVD – you can watch Sykes, the classic BBC sitcom – starring Eric Sykes and Hattie Jacques.  Network DVD’s catalogue is full of great titles – my shelves are bursting with Benny Hill, On The Buses, The Wheeltappers and Shunters Social Club and many more.  Sykes is another gem for any TV collector.
The last time ‘Sykes’ had a repeat run on TV was on early mornings on GOLD, but that was at least a couple of years ago.  BBC2 screened a selection of episodes back in the mid 1990’s – and that’s when I first came across the series, and loved it instantly.  I don’t understand why the show isn’t repeated now on Drama or Yesterday, instead of the same few classic sitcoms they do repeat.  Having watched these DVD’s, I can assure you, it’s as funny as ever.

The first colour series was released by Network many years ago, and then deleted – with no further episodes being released for a long time. Thankfully, that’s now changed. 68 episodes are available on this release, containing all seven colour series from the sitcom’s run.
Now to clarify something which a couple of people had asked me about whilst I was reviewing this title. There was a previous series, ‘Sykes and a…’ which ran from 1960-1965. 59 episodes were made in monochrome, but only 25 of these survive. However, these are not in this boxset, the episodes included start from 1972. But, bear in mind that 43 of the Sykes colour episodes were remakes of scripts from the 1960’s series!
Series One even includes some DVD extras, just like Network’s original release did. The behind the scenes footage from 1972 is absolutely brilliant, and this continues throughout the three discs of Series One. There’s also a short feature to show how Series One was restored by Network, before being released on DVD – a great deal of work going into the original Series One release.
From Series Two to Seven (the series never before commercially available), there are no extras. But all of the classic episodes, including the Christmas Specials throughout its run.
My favourite episodes are ‘Six Million Dollar Sykes’ from Series Seven – who shows Sykes as the Bionic Man! Stranger from Series One, featuring Peter Sellers is an absolute classic. ‘Window Smasher’ is another favourite of mine.
One of the show’s great characters was neighbour Mr. Brown, played by Richard Wattis – who sadly passed away before the fourth series was made. Derryck Guyler was also brilliant as Corky, the neighbourhood policeman.
Hattie Jacques, who starred along Eric Sykes, sadly died the year after Sykes ended – on 6th October 1980, aged just 58.
There’s over 32 hours of comedy in this boxset – RRP is £89.99. You can purchase the series at http://networkonair.com/coming-soon/2604-sykes-the-complete-series

Forthcoming Football on S4C

Back of the net! Online matches and Friday night football on Sgorio for 2017/18 WPL fixtures

S4C’s flagship football show Sgorio has announced its first raft of live televised Welsh Premier League (WPL) matches for the 2017/18 season, as well as some additional matches which will be shown exclusively online.

Between the start of the season and the end of September, Sgorio, S4C and the Football Association of Wales (FAW) have selected matches from different competitions to be shown live on various platforms.

During the first block of games Sgorio will be experimenting with live televised games on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, as well as showing additional WPL matches online on Thursday nights.

The Sgorio season will start on Sunday, 13 August with a trip to Jenner Park as newly-promoted Barry Town host Aberystwyth Town in their first match in the top flight since 2004. On the following Saturday, 19 August, champions The New Saints will welcome Bala Town to Park Hall live on S4C.

S4C will show live Friday night football from the WPL for the first time ever on 25 August, when Bangor City go head-to-head with last season’s Huws Gray Alliance champions, Prestatyn Town, at the Bangor University Stadium.

The attention will turn to the international fixtures at the start of September with Wales’ double header against Austria (02/09) and Moldova (05/09) both live on S4C.

Sandwiched between the two World Cup qualifiers will be a live Irn-Bru Cup second round fixture as TNS and Connah’s Quay both join the competition on Sunday, 3 September.

On Thursday, 7 September, Llandudno v Prestatyn will be available to watch live on our website or on Facebook Live. The match between Barry Town and Carmarthen Town will also be streamed live on the web on Thursday, 21 September. Two days later, on Saturday, 23 September, Aberystwyth Town will battle with Bangor City live on S4C at Park Avenue.

Sky Sports on Now TV – Reviewed for 2017

Time to take a look at Sky’s Now TV offering of Sky Sports – many thanks to Sky for giving me the opportunity to review.

I’ll admit that sport took a back step for me when I got the Week Pass last month.  A couple of days after watching Bradford City v Millwall in the League One Play Off Final, there was the tragic events at Manchester Arena.  Like many, I was glued to the news for the rest of the week.

But, I did enjoy the weekend’s sport when I activated my Sky Sports Week Pass – there’s six great channels to choose from – with extensive sport 24 hours a day on each channel.  Cue Sky Sports 1 -5 and Sky Sports F1.  Many readers have asked me – “What about Sky Sports Mix?” – is this on Now TV?  Sadly, that’s a no.  At the moment there are “no plans” to add Sky Sports Mix to the Now TV offering either – hopefully this will change in the future.

But, back to the channels you can receive.  I was really impressed with the picture quality and sound – not only that, but the choice is unique to Sky Sports.  If you have BT Sport then you can receive four subscription channels including Box Nation, but six channels means an unprecedented amount of coverage.  Quite literally, there’s something for everyone.

£6.99 for a Sky Sports Day Pass is great value for money.  Take the Bradford Play Off as an example.  I know many people that paid a lot more to get down to Wembley to watch the game.  Sky’s coverage was excellent, and for 24 hours of sports coverage, £6.99 is less than what it costs for a cinema ticket these days.  For just £4 more, you can purchase a Sky Sports Week Pass, which is great during the Premier League season – and Sky Sports has more games than any other broadcaster.

For £33.99, you can purchase a Sky Sports Monthly Pass, which for just over £1 a day, I think, is really good value, and I have to admit, I’m tempted to subscribe!  My wife buys the Daily Mail every day – and just for a few pence more, you can have access to six sports channels, 24 hours a day, all year round.

Well worth checking out – and if you have the Now TV Sky Sports offerings, please do let me know what you think!  Keep your comments coming!

Chris
