22-23 Oct: LIVE Alpine Skiing World Cup

Eurosport’s winter sports coverage begins this week with the first round of the 2016/17 Alpine Skiing World Cup from Soelden, Austria.

In the final full season before Eurosport broadcasts LIVE coverage of the 2018 Winter Olympics, this year’s World Cup takes on a new significance. Skiers from across the globe will be eager to prove themselves as serious medal contenders while fans will have a chance to pick their favourites.

One British skier aiming to make a name for himself in Pyeongchang is slalom specialist Dave Ryding. Last season Ryding became the fourth British skier in the history of the World Cup to qualify for the World Cup Finals. The 29-year-old claimed 17th place at the last Winter Olympics in Sochi but achieved some impressive results in the World Cup last year and will fancy his chances of finishing in the top-10 in 2018.

Another story to look out for this season is Lindsey Vonn’s hunt for the record of World Cup victories. Vonn announced on her twitter page that she would be concentrating on chasing down Swedish legend Ingemar Stenmark’s record of 86 victories (she is currently on 76 wins) rather than pursuing the overall World Cup title.

Eurosport’s LIVE coverage of these rounds will feature commentary from Winter Olympian Finlay Mickel and former British ski champion Nick Fellows.

25-29 Oct: Live Cycling – Six Day London

Sir Bradley Wiggins and Mark Cavendish will team-up at this week’s Six Day London as the pair return to the Lee Valley velodrome for the first time since their World Championship victory in March.

Olympic champion Wiggins has announced that Six Day London will be the penultimate event of his career before he bows out of racing. This will be Wiggins’ first appearance at a Six Day event on home soil and one last chance for British fans to watch their hero compete on the same stage where he won gold in the London 2012 time trial.

Wiggins and Cavendish will reignite a longstanding rivalry with 2015 Six Day London winners Kenny de Ketele and Moreno de Pauw in this event. The Belgians may be defending their Six Day title here but they lost out to the British pair in the Madison at the World Championships in March.

Eurosport will broadcast all six days featuring a range of disciplines from time trials to the Six Day-invented Madison. The event will also feature a women’s omnium, as well as sprints and junior races. Five-time World Champion O’Sullivan beat 20-year-old James Cahill in qualification to secure his place in the tournament. He has drawn Xiao Guodong in the first round and will take him on in a best of 11 frames match.

Mark Selby and 2015 champion John Higgins are yet to play their qualifiers but are expected to join the likes of O’Sullivan, Judd Trump and Shaun Murphy in the main draw.
