Snooker Celebration at the Crucible

Please see attached press release from World Snooker.  Sounds like a fantastic event, and all for a great cause.  Chris

Six time World Snooker Champion Steve Davis is urging fans in the Sheffield area not to miss next month’s special show at the Crucible.

The 40th Anniversary Celebration of Sheffield’s World Snooker Championship will take place at the Crucible on Friday April 14th, starting at 6pm. Former World Champions and all of the players competing in the 2017 tournament have been invited, so there will be many famous faces among the crowd.

The show will be a mixture of live interviews with these green baize greats, and archive footage of the most memorable moments of the past four decades of snooker’s biggest tournament.

“It’s going to be a wonderful occasion,” said Davis, who retired from pro snooker last year, having won the World title in 1981, 83, 84, 87, 88 and 89. “It’s amazing to think we have been at the Crucible for 40 years – there have been so many special moments. This is the perfect way to celebrate four decades of snooker in Sheffield.

“Snooker’s relationship with the Crucible has always been quite unique and magical. I’m delighted that we’re staying in Sheffield for at least another ten years. But it’s something that local people should never take for granted. And now here’s the chance to see what will be a fabulous tribute to the past 40 years.”

Staged by World Snooker and Sheffield City Council, this show is a unique opportunity for fans to celebrate the sport and see the top stars in the flesh.

Book fast – tickets for this unique occasion will cost just £20. A donation from the ticket sales will be made to Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice.

More Snooker on Freeview! China Open!

snooker-on-quest

Quest and Eurosport will be simulcasting all live sessions of World Snooker’s China Open from Monday 27 March until Sunday 2 April 2017.  This is the first time that Quest will air this tournament and adds to the growing snooker inventory that kicked off with the Home Nations series in 2016.

The China Open is the longest-running world ranking snooker event staged in China, dating back to 2005 and was won by Ding Junhui, aged just 18, beating Stephen Hendry.  This proved to be a catalyst for the explosion of interest in snooker, which paved the way to make it one of the country’s most popular sports.  The tournament brings snooker’s elite to the Chinese capital to compete for the iconic gold shield.  Last year saw Judd Trump claim his second China Open title with a dominant 10-4 victory over Ricky Walden. This year’s prize pots totals an impressive £510,000 with the winner pocketing a generous £85,000. The tournament is the penultimate ranking event prior to the season-ending World Championship – the pinnacle of the snooker season.

Quest and Eurosport will be broadcasting every session all week, however Quest will air the final’s concluding session exclusively LIVE at 1230pm on Sunday 2nd April. Eurosport 2 will show full final highlights at 6pm. Commentary comes from 1986 World Champion Joe Johnson, former world number six Mike Hallett, David Hendon and Phillip Studd.

Snooker On Freeview – A Guide (Updated)

Hello all – following the English Open on Quest, I thought it would be a good idea to put together a guide, detailing all of the ‘Free’ Snooker available this season.

quest2014

October 10th – 16th 2016 (7 days)

Quest – English Open

The 1st tournament in the new ‘Home Nations’ series.  Eurosport has full coverage for subscribers, but Quest had daytime coverage, plus highlights of the evening sessions and the final in full, live and for free.

November 7th – 12th 2016 (6 days)

ITV4 – Champion of Champions

ITV has the rights for this tournament until 2019.  Featuring the winners of the various tournaments throughout the year, it’s not a ranking event but ITV provide great coverage.

November 14th – 20th (7 days)

Quest – Northern Irish Open

The 2nd tournament in the new ‘Home Nations’ series.  Expect coverage to be similar to the ‘English Open’ (see above).

November 26th – December 4th (9 days)

BBC – UK Championships

Live on the BBC until 2019 – there is coverage on BBC One and Two, and extensive coverage on the BBC Red Button channel, of one table.  The BBC Sports App has two tables of live action.

December 12th – 18th  (7 days)

Quest – Scottish Open

The 3rd tournament in the new ‘Home Nations’ series.  Expect coverage to be similar to the ‘English Open’ (see above).

snooker-on-quest

January 15th – 22nd (8 days)

BBC – Masters

Live on the BBC until 2019 – it’s a one table tournament all week, with full coverage on BBC Red Button, and there’s live action on BBC One (usually on the Saturday) and BBC Two during the week.

February 6th – 12th (7 days)

ITV4 – World Grand Prix

Live on ITV until 2019 – this will be held in Preston in 2017.

February 13th – 19th  (7 days)

BBC Red Button – Welsh Open

The final tournament in the new ‘Home Nations’ series.  Quest don’t have the free-to-air rights to this tournament.  However, BBC Red Button broadcasts BBC Wales’s live coverage, with daytime live sessions and an hour of live coverage in the evenings.  Some coverage may not be on BBC Red Button if there is another event on (e.g Final Score) but full coverage will be on the BBC Sport App.

February 23rd – 26th (4 days)

ITV4 – Snooker Shoot Out

Live on ITV until 2018 – this will be held in Watford in 2017.  It will feature 128 players in 2017 – this is quick fire snooker!  Blink and you will miss!  Great format though.

March 6th – 12th (7 days)

ITV4 – Players Championship

Live on ITV, this will be held in Llandudno.

April 15th – May 1st (17 days)

BBC – World Snooker Championships

Live on the BBC until 2019 – this is the big finale to the season.  BBC Red Button has extensive coverage of one table, with two tables available via the BBC Sports App.

So, that’s 86 days of live snooker on Freeview in the 2016/17 season – great news!  Spread the word – and bookmark this article, it might just be useful!  Chris

Quest – Northern Ireland Open (Updated)

Starting on Monday November 14th, Quest will be showing the 2nd in the new Snooker Home Nations series.  Liang Wenbo is the only player still with a chance of winning a £1 million bonus, but he still has three tournaments to win if he wants to get the hands on the money!  Wenbo beat Judd Trump in the final of the English Open last month, great final.  As soon as I have transmission times for the end of the tournament, I will add these to this article.

snooker-on-quest

Three live broadcasts from Quest’s English Open got in Quest’s Top 10 programmes for that week (according to website Barb) – great news. The conclusion to the final attracted 183,000 viewers – the 2nd most watched show on Quest that week (Oct 10-16 2016).  Let’s get the ratings even higher for the Northern Ireland Open!  Spread the word!

Info from Quest below – many thanks to QUEST for sending this to us:

‘Live from the 14th -20th November Quest is the only place, free to air, to see the three NEW events added to the World Snooker Home Nations calendar; the English Open, the Northern Ireland Open and the Scottish Open. Snooker’s top stars are expected to compete including Ronnie O’Sullivan, Jimmy White, Mark Selby, Neil Robertson, Shaun Murphy and Judd Trump. Quest will be airing the daytime sessions, hosted by Colin Murray. The highlights from the previous evening’s play will air from Tuesday 15th November, and you can watch the whole final on Sunday 20th November. The Home Nations Series is a new series of events adding to the established, Welsh Open. The grand prize for winning all four tournaments is a massive £1 million bonus.’

For this tournament, the timings will be the same as last time, however we will be showing the evening sessions as well on Saturday and Sunday.’

No mention of the Welsh Open in Quest’s comments above – this could be because BBC Wales/BBC Red Button have coverage and maybe Quest can’t show this one.  I’ll report back once I have clarification.  Chris

Quest to show Live Snooker – English Open (Times now added)

Hello all,

Snooker has arrived on Quest -from October!  Great news!  The Home Nations Snooker Series is a new feature to the Snooker calendar and looks like we will see some coverage for free!  Quest is owned by Discovery, who also own Eurosport – this is why sports such as Cricket and British Superbikes have been appearing on Quest lately.

Snooker on Quest.JPG

Quest will be showing the Home Nations Snooker Series,  starting with the English Open on the 14th October at Event City in Manchester.  Quest will only be showing the morning sessions from Monday to Saturday, however we will be broadcasting highlights from the evening sessions next day, and will be showing the complete final on the 16th October.

Andy Goldstein will be presenting the tournament, whilst Ronnie O’Sullivan, Jimmy White and Neal Foulds will play pundits.

Other tournaments to come?

Hopefully Quest will show the Irish, Scottish and Welsh Open in the Home Nations Series too.

For me, this is a good result – Eurosport subscribers get full coverage, but at least the Home Nations series gets the chance to attract a wider audience also.  The Irish Open will follow in November, with the Scottish Open and Welsh Open to come too.  Hopefully Quest will show coverage of these as well!  BBC Red Button and BBC Wales have shown free-to-air coverage of the Welsh Open historically, but if the coverage attracts good audiences – maybe we’ll see more of Eurosport’s Snooker tournaments appearing on Quest…  I for one, certainly hope so.  Chris
