Back of the net! Online matches and Friday night football on Sgorio for 2017/18 WPL fixtures

S4C’s flagship football show Sgorio has announced its first raft of live televised Welsh Premier League (WPL) matches for the 2017/18 season, as well as some additional matches which will be shown exclusively online.

Between the start of the season and the end of September, Sgorio, S4C and the Football Association of Wales (FAW) have selected matches from different competitions to be shown live on various platforms.

During the first block of games Sgorio will be experimenting with live televised games on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, as well as showing additional WPL matches online on Thursday nights.

S4C will show live Friday night football from the WPL for the first time ever on 25 August, when Bangor City go head-to-head with last season’s Huws Gray Alliance champions, Prestatyn Town, at the Bangor University Stadium.

The attention will turn to the international fixtures at the start of September with Wales’ double header against Austria (02/09) and Moldova (05/09) both live on S4C.

Sandwiched between the two World Cup qualifiers will be a live Irn-Bru Cup second round fixture as TNS and Connah’s Quay both join the competition on Sunday, 3 September.

On Thursday, 7 September, Llandudno v Prestatyn will be available to watch live on our website or on Facebook Live. The match between Barry Town and Carmarthen Town will also be streamed live on the web on Thursday, 21 September. The Works – Take a Look

theworks-logo

Thanks to The Works, who kindly sent me an academic diary for 2017/18.  So many stores on the high street now, but also a great range online too – and if you see something online, you can select it, and go and collect it from your nearest outlet.

With my MC work in particular, an academic diary is really handy – i’m starting to get bookings for next year, and it means I can make a note of them.  I have two diaries – I have a planner, with my daily to-do lists, and a daily diary, where I write my journal and thoughts – and I’ve done this since 2005!  I started out with my journal by keeping an A5 Day to Page Diary, but now have expanded to an A4 Day to a Page, somehow I manage to fill a page each day with my thoughts!

So, whatever diary  you’re looking for – The Works will have something for you, and if you have anyone you know who’s going back to school, college or university, then all your stationery needs can be sorted here.

20170423_143046

Hello, welcome to a revised blog – with a bit of a new look. I hope you like it. Please contact me and let me know.
What is now included – I’ve tried to include BBC Sport which does not feature on the BBC Red Button channel now – more and more people have access to the BBC Sport App, therefore I believe adding information such as this is useful. For example on the BBC Sport App/Website this week, there’s Lacrosse and NI Super Cup Football – which sadly won’t appear on the BBC Red Button channel.
What you won’t see anymore – the BT Showcase archive page of listings has gone, as I don’t think it’s particularly useful to see what has been shown, it’s more important to tell you what will be shown. For this season on BT Showcase, expect 12 UEFA Champions League games (each British team has to be shown once), 14 UEFA Europa League matches, and highlights of each Big Bash League Cricket match. We should also see daily Ashes highlights (BT Sport have live coverage of the Winter Series). In the past we’ve seen 9 live Aviva Premiership Rugby Union games each season, but Channel 5 have now picked up 5 live games each season, so I don’t think we’ll see anymore on BT Showcase. This is the last season which BT have to show 26 UEFA games, whether the channel will survive or not after May will be interesting to see…
Another change is I’ve deleted the individual pages of music reviews and details of my MC work. Music/DVD reviews and other occasional reviews will appear here, supplementing the listings.

Emirates Cup to be shown live and exclusively on Quest.

Chris’s Verdict:
Great that Quest is making even more Sport available for Freeview viewers. British Superbikes Round 7 will be live on Quest on August 6th and Round 9 will be shown on September 10th. The Snooker World Open will also be shown between September 18th and 24th… and the European Masters and Home Nations will follow later in the year! So many Snooker tournaments now available to watch on Freeview via BBC, ITV4 or Quest – it’s great for the sport. Quest did show some football three years ago, when they broadcast the 2014 Schalke 04 Cup and the Dubai Challenge Cup.

Fans can watch all the action live and for free on Freeview, Freesat, Sky, Virgin and BT TV.
Saturday 29 July – RB Leipzig vs Sevilla at 2pm and Arsenal vs Benfica at 4.20pm.
Sunday 30 July – RB Leipzig vs Benfica at 2pm and Arsenal vs Sevilla at 4.20pm

Full Transmission Times – Sat 13:55-15:45 and 16:15-18:05/Sun 13:55-15:45 and 16:15-18:05

Quest is to show live and exclusive coverage of the Emirates Cup 2017 over the weekend of the 29-30 July as Arsenal play host for the summer pre-season tournament – and £52 million record signing Alexandre Lacazette makes his home debut.

Quest will bring football fans all the action live and for free from the four-way clash at the Emirates Stadium – that welcomes Benfica, the current Portuguese champions, Sevilla, the Europa League winners in 2014, 2015 and 2016, and RB Leipzig, who finished this season as runners up in the Bundesliga.

This will be the ninth staging of the Emirates Cup, which has been a regular fixture in Arsenal’s pre-season schedule since moving to Emirates Stadium.

The Emirates Cup 2017 kicks-off at 2pm on Saturday 29 July with RB Leipzig taking on Sevilla, Arsenal then face Benfica at 4.20pm. On Sunday 30 July, RB Leipzig play Benfica at 2pm, before Arsenal bring the tournament to a close against Sevilla, which kicks off at 4.20pm.

As normal, teams are awarded three points for a win and one point for a draw. However, the competition rewards attacking play, with teams awarded an additional point for each goal they score. Shots on target will used to decide the tournament winners if teams are level on points and goal difference.

“The Emirates Cup is a fantastic tournament and great addition to Quest’s line-up of top sporting action. From the iconic Le Mans 24 Hours endurance race to the Giro d’Italia, cycling’s first grand tour of the season and World Snooker’s Home Nations Series later in the year, Quest shows a rich variety of sport for fans, all for free,” said Simon Downing, Head of Quest.

Arsenal Chief Executive Ivan Gazidis said: “We’re all delighted to once again be hosting the Emirates Cup this summer. Every year we have staged the competition, the Emirates Cup has been hugely successful and a thoroughly enjoyable weekend of football. Benfica, Sevilla and Leipzig are three strong clubs, with good players, who will not only hopefully produce some exciting football, but also provide us with high quality preparation ahead of the new season.”

Quest is on Freeview channel number 37, Freesat 167, Sky, Virgin Media and BT TV.

UK Sports Broadcasting Rights – Part 1: Golf
Time to start a new weekly series, trying to explain the Sport available on Freeview at present. And, with the conclusion to The Open this weekend – seems like Golf is a good place to start. And, if the rights situation changes with Golf, I’ll republish in a future issue. With Golf, it’s quite straight forward – there’s only the BBC that broadcasts any Golf on Freeview at present, with a mixture of live broadcasts and highlights programmes.
Majors
The Open – With live coverage exclusive to Sky Sports now, there’s a two hour daily highlights programme for each day, on BBC Two until 2021.
The Masters – BBC Two once again the broadcaster. Highlights of Rounds 1 and 2, plus live coverage of Rounds 3 and 4 until 2019.
US PGA Championship – Live and exclusive on the BBC in 2017.  If this continues in 2017, it would mean the BBC broadcast 6 days of live coverage from the ‘Majors’ in total.

Other Events

TV Player Highlights For This Week

Eurosport – TV Player is home to Eurosport, and the channels have extensive coverage of the Women’s European Football Championships. On Saturday, there’s live coverage of Iceland v Switzerland at 5pm on Eurosport 1 and France v Austria at 7:30pm on Eurosport 2 – no Freeview coverage for these games. The Cycling Tour De Wallonie starts on Eurosport 1 on Monday.

Comedy Central – Look out for Sharknado on Thursday at 9pm. I’ve only seen clips of this, but it attracted a cult following, and sequels have followed!

Music Review – Deacon Blue: The Believers

p041c2pv

And now, time to take a listen to Deacon Blue’s latest album, ‘The Believers’. I first truly appreciated Deacon Blue during my college and university days, thanks to college friend Craig West, who compiled a cassette full of his recommended Deacon Blue favourites for me to discover. Also, during their ‘Homesick’ tour, I saw them perform live at the Manchester Apollo, and it still is genuinely one of the best concerts I have ever been to.

Great venue, great band, great sound – what more could you want? I also recently bought their first album, ‘Raintown’ on vinyl – which is an absolute classic. Fast forward to present date, and how does the band sound now?

Track Listing:
The Believers
This Is A Love Song
I Will and I Won’t
Meteors
Gone
What I Left Out
A Boy
Birds
You Can’t Know Everything
Delivery Man
Come Awake
B Boy

On Deacon Blue’s website at the time of release (September 2016), singer Ricky Ross wrote “Here’s eleven songs to take you on the next part of the journey. Old songs are old friends; we hope you can find it in your hearts to let these new ones into your life.”
The Believers is a great opening track, and for me, is a classic, up there with ‘Chocolate Girl’, ‘Real Gone Kid’ and many others.

Tracks 2 and 3 are really strong too – I Will and I Won’t is a great love song, which will play over and over in your head, hours after you’ve listened to it.

And, I’ve listened to this album several times now and cliche as it sounds, it genuinely gets better every time I listen to it.  Each time I play it, there’s a different song that stands out – and different lyrics stand out each time too.  That’s how good a record it is.  ‘You Can’t Know Everything’ and ‘Delivery Man’ my latest favourites!

Deacon Blue are touring this year – check out http://deaconblue.com/live/ for more information.  It’s been too long since that gig at the Apollo, I will have to go and see them again!  Chris

This Sunday, LIVE on Front Runner, we have the next rounds of the British GT Championship and MINI Challenge – and here’s what we have lined up for you afterwards.

New for May, we will be showing live greyhound racing across all platforms every Tuesday evening from 7pm.

As well as the live events, we have brand new episodes in our poker shows, professional fighting, motorsport and alternative sports.

And there’s also more of The Indoor League, presented by the late cricket legend Fred Trueman.

So here’s the full round up…. Enjoy!

  1. LIVE greyhound racing.

Tuesdays between 7pm and 11pm.

From now on, watch live greyhound action for FREE across all our platforms every Tuesday evening. Follow all the action as it happens from the tracks at multiple locations across the country.

  1. LIVE British GT Championship and MINI Challenge from Snetterton in Norfolk.

Sunday May 28th all day.

For the first time ever, the British GT Championship and MINI Challenge season is being broadcast LIVE from the track.

We would’ve already been to Oulton Park and Rockingham ISSC tracks. This round, the teams will be at Snetterton circuit in Norfolk, and once again all the action will be available throughout the day on Front Runner.

  1. Chessboxing: UKIP vs Lib Dem.

The Brexit Belt featuring UKIP MEP Jonathan Arnott vs Lib Dem activist Toby White.

Bank Holiday Monday (May 1st) at 7pm. (Repeated Wednesday May 10th).

Chessboxing is a hybrid fighting sport combining two traditional British sports, boxing and chess, as competitors take rounds of chess mixed with rounds of boxing until a winner is declared either via knockout or checkmate.

This wild sporting mash-up on Bank Holiday Monday includes the bout between UKIP MEP Jonathan Arnott and Lib Dem activist Toby White. There’s also an enthralling England vs Finland undercard with former IBF world champ Terry Marsh.

  1. World Poker Tour.

Bank Holiday Monday, Wednesdays and Fridays at 2pm and Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays at 7.30pm.

One of Front Runner’s most popular shows, World Poker Tour follows the action from the tables of premiere high-stake poker tournaments.

These stars know how to keep calm under intense pressure, even when there’s hundreds of thousands of dollars at stake. And you certainly feel the tension around the table.

  1. Poker Night in America.

Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays at 9.30pm.

Poker Night in America made its UK debut on Front Runner last year – and straight away became a firm favourite.

As well as following the action, we also get to know the players around the poker table. And there are certainly some characters in this crowd!

  1. More professional fighting.

Fights from the Vault. Saturdays at 11pm. (Repeated Mondays at 9pm).

Behind the Fighter. Sundays at 9.30pm. (Repeated Mondays at 8.30pm).

Every weekend, we show fantastic combat sports action on Front Runner and there’s a chance to see professional fighters battle it out in ‘Fights from the Vault’.

These athletes have trained for years to build up the strength and endurance for the events – and fans can watch them in action on the UK’s only free sports channel.

If you missed out on the last series of Behind the Fighter, there’s a chance to catch up every Sunday on episodes about Kane Mousah (Sunday May 7th), Panicos Yusuf (Sunday May 14th), Andy DeVent (Sunday May 21st) and Aaron Aby (Sunday May 28th).

  1. The Indoor League. MORE EPISODES!

Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays at 5.30pm. (Repeated Sundays between 1pm and 2.30pm).

The 1970s series has brought back so many happy memories of playing table skittles, shove ha’penny, bar billiards and Yorkshire darts at the village local.

So cricket legend Fred Trueman – with his pipe in one hand and a pint in t’other – is staying on Front Runner with more shows throughout May.

  1. Gillette World Sport 2017. SERIES CONTINUES!

New episode on Thursday May 4th and May 18 at 9.30pm on Freeview only.

If you enjoy niche sports, then there’s no better programme for you than Gillette World Sport.

This feature-driven show delves into the idiosyncrasies of your favourite sports, taking a look at the techniques used by athletes, how they train, technology, the cutting edge science and much more.

  1. Bike World. SERIES CONTINUES!

Friday May 12th and Friday May 26th at 6.30pm.

Europe’s most popular motorbike entertainment show is airing on Front Runner for all you two-wheeled fanatics. Join the team as they take you on a magical journey throughout Europe, bringing you exclusive stories ahead of anyone else.

  1. Mobil 1 the Grid. SERIES CONTINUES!

Friday May 5th at 5pm and Friday April 19th at 5pm.

This is the show to get your motorsport round-up. This motoring magazine show offers behind the scenes access to race days, team news and insights into the technology used on your favourite cars from the world of motorsport.

Follow listings for more information. Front Runner is available on Freeview ch91, FreeSat ch250, Talk Talk/BT ch91 and Sky ch468.

Snooker On Freeview – A Guide (Updated)

Hello all – following the English Open on Quest, I thought it would be a good idea to put together a guide, detailing all of the ‘Free’ Snooker available this season.

quest2014

October 10th – 16th 2016 (7 days)

Quest – English Open

The 1st tournament in the new ‘Home Nations’ series.  Eurosport has full coverage for subscribers, but Quest had daytime coverage, plus highlights of the evening sessions and the final in full, live and for free.

November 7th – 12th 2016 (6 days)

ITV4 – Champion of Champions

ITV has the rights for this tournament until 2019.  Featuring the winners of the various tournaments throughout the year, it’s not a ranking event but ITV provide great coverage.

November 14th – 20th (7 days)

Quest – Northern Irish Open

The 2nd tournament in the new ‘Home Nations’ series.  Expect coverage to be similar to the ‘English Open’ (see above).

November 26th – December 4th (9 days)

BBC – UK Championships

Live on the BBC until 2019 – there is coverage on BBC One and Two, and extensive coverage on the BBC Red Button channel, of one table.  The BBC Sports App has two tables of live action.

December 12th – 18th  (7 days)

Quest – Scottish Open

The 3rd tournament in the new ‘Home Nations’ series.  Expect coverage to be similar to the ‘English Open’ (see above).

snooker-on-quest

January 15th – 22nd (8 days)

BBC – Masters

Live on the BBC until 2019 – it’s a one table tournament all week, with full coverage on BBC Red Button, and there’s live action on BBC One (usually on the Saturday) and BBC Two during the week.

February 6th – 12th (7 days)

ITV4 – World Grand Prix

Live on ITV until 2019 – this will be held in Preston in 2017.

February 13th – 19th  (7 days)

BBC Red Button – Welsh Open

The final tournament in the new ‘Home Nations’ series.  Quest don’t have the free-to-air rights to this tournament.  However, BBC Red Button broadcasts BBC Wales’s live coverage, with daytime live sessions and an hour of live coverage in the evenings.  Some coverage may not be on BBC Red Button if there is another event on (e.g Final Score) but full coverage will be on the BBC Sport App.

February 23rd – 26th (4 days)

ITV4 – Snooker Shoot Out

Live on ITV until 2018 – this will be held in Watford in 2017.  It will feature 128 players in 2017 – this is quick fire snooker!  Blink and you will miss!  Great format though.

March 6th – 12th (7 days)

ITV4 – Players Championship

Live on ITV, this will be held in Llandudno.

April 15th – May 1st (17 days)

BBC – World Snooker Championships

Live on the BBC until 2019 – this is the big finale to the season.  BBC Red Button has extensive coverage of one table, with two tables available via the BBC Sports App.

So, that’s 86 days of live snooker on Freeview in the 2016/17 season – great news!  Spread the word – and bookmark this article, it might just be useful!  Chris
