Football score updates.

Sunday May 14th:
8:00pm-10:00pm WTA Tennis – Madrid Open highlights from the Final.

Man United Europa League Final LIVE on FREEVIEW!

Spread the word – bookmark this page, we have 12 days to tell everyone!

Manchester United v Ajax will be FREE and LIVE on Freeview – BT Showcase, Channel 115… the 2017 Europa League Final.

Coverage starts at 7pm, and is scheduled to end at 10:30pm.  And, best of all it will be in glorious high definition.

Quick Test

Now, do a check on your Freeview TV.  If you can’t see BBC One HD on 101, then you won’t be able to see BT Showcase on 115.  If you can see BBC One HD but can’t see BT Showcase on 115, try doing a rescan – the channel only appeared this week!  It has moved from Freeview Channel 59 – basically 90% of the population used to be able to receive the channel, now only 75% of the country will be able to view it.

I can’t see BT Showcase – What Can I Do?

If you still can’t see BT Showcase on Channel 115 – then it means your TV isn’t Freeview HD compatiable.  The solution could be to purchase a Freeview HD set top box.

What channels can I receive where I live?

There’s several channels available once you have one of these Freeview HD boxes, or a Freeview HD tv.  But, you may not be able to receive them, depending on where you live.  Check out https://www.freeview.co.uk/channels-at-your-address – this will tell you, before you buy any necessary equipment!

Links to several are here via Amazon -https://www.amazon.co.uk/s/ref=nb_sb_noss_2?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=freeview+hd+set+top+box

BT Showcase – So What Now? (Updated 09.05.17)

BT Showcase was on Freeview Channel 59, but what about the future?  Well, from May 9th, the channel will move to Freeview Channel 115 – and will be in HD.  Unfortunately it will mean that unless you can receive Freeview HD channels (e.g BBC One on 101), then you won’t be able to find BT Showcase in its new location.  Channel 59 may well be sold now to another broadcaster – we shall see…  I feel sorry for my Uncle Frank; he loved watching the Champions and Europa League games, but I rang him this morning and we’ve checked – he won’t be able to receive BT Showcase anymore.

I think 115 will be a cheaper slot for BT – can anyone confirm this?  It only reaches approximately 75% of the population.

Here are merely my predictions for the channel – let me know what you think.  Please comment below.

BT Showcase Schedule Updated 06.05.17

Take a look at the spreadsheet above – detailing everything that’s been shown on the channel.

In its first year, BT Showcase broadcast over 112 hours of programming, and this season there has been over 222 hours of programming so far. So, let’s be grateful for that – the more sport on Freeview, the better for everyone!  Chris

European Football

http://sport.bt.com/football/bt-retains-exclusive-rights-to-uefa-champions-league-and-uefa-europa-league-S11364161627708

In this statement, BT said “BT will enhance its social media coverage to reach new audiences, by making clips, weekly highlights, UEFA’s magazine show, and both finals available for free on social media. BT streamed both finals last year on YouTube for the first time, taking the number of people who watched BT’s live coverage of the finals to more than twelve million.  The company will also seek to bring the best of the action to its large mobile customer base.”  In my opinion, I think the 14 Europa League games will be shown next season, and the 12 Champions League games will be shown, as required for the last year of the current contract… but from the 2018/19 season we will see highlights via BT Sport’s You Tube Channel and the 2 finals streamed live on there too.

Aviva Premiership Rugby

As reported on my blog this week, Channel 5 have picked up five live games a season, for the next four years, plus weekly highlights.  BT Showcase currently shows nine live games a season, but these are often not mentioned in TV listings.  I have contacted the BT newsroom to see if the nine games will continue on BT Showcase, I guess they won’t, but as of yet I haven’t received a reply.

Big Bash Cricket

BT won a free-to-air package for the Australian Big Bash Cricket League, which started in 2016 and will run for five years.

http://sport.bt.com/cricket/bt-sport-wins-rights-to-show-2017-18-ashes-series-when-england-defend-urn-in-australia-S11363999728418

The article says “BT Sport has also acquired a free-to-air rights package that includes daily highlights of international matches and the Big Bash League, as well as one Big Bash League ‘match of the round’ broadcast live and free each week.”

BT sold the selection of free live games to Channel 5, and broadcast the daily highlights on BT Showcase.  What could happen to these highlights?  With Champions and Europa League continuing for at least another season, I predict the 2017 Big Bash League highlights will remain on BT Showcase.  As for 2018-2020, could these be sold to Channel 5 and perhaps shown on Spike- which is a channel which shows wrestling, boxing, etc?

Other Programming

BT Sport Score is a bonus that we get to see on Saturday – as are the occasion WTA Tennis finals and previews of AMC dramas.  For me, I would have loved to have seen Vanarama Football highlights on the channel – these are made available on BT’s You Tube site, so why can’t they be scheduled in on Freeview, to attract even more people to the National League?

Freeview platforms are expensive – and with no necessary programming on the channel, the space could easily be sold to another broadcaster – the channel currently has broadcast space from 12noon each day.

The race itself is considered one of the toughest challenges in the world of sport, with riders having to tackle not only the cobblestones of northern France but the elements as well, with weather usually playing a massive part in the result.

Eurosport expert Rob Hatch will be joined by two-time winner of the Paris-Roubaix Sean Kelly in the commentary booth.

Watch Sutton United v Leeds United exclusively on BT Sport

For fans of both Sutton and Leeds of a certain vintage, the clash will evoke nostalgic memories of the 1970 meeting between the sides in the third round of this competition.

At the time, the Whites were one of the most feared – albeit not always universally loved – teams in the land, having just won their first-ever league title under Don Revie.

A star-studded line-up featuring the likes of Billy Bremner, Johnny Giles, Jack Charlton and Norman Hunter (no rotation for the cups back then…) romped to a 6-0 victory in front of a jam-packed 14,000 crowd.

Leeds went on to reach the final that year, eventually losing to Chelsea in a replay, and also made it to the last four of the European Cup in the same campaign.

And although they return to Gander Green Lane as a drastically diminished force in comparison to those halcyon days, the tie is no less significant for Sutton’s part-timers.

Having scored a mightily impressive 3-1 win at League One side AFC Wimbledon in their third-round replay, they are now looking to pen arguably the most famous chapter in their FA Cup history.

Until now, the club has been synonymous with a shock 2-1 triumph over Coventry City in 1989, just two years after the Sky Blues had lifted the trophy at Wembley.

But with that success coming in the third round, dispatching Leeds and reaching round five for the first time would surely rank as their finest achievement.

However, Paul Doswell‘s heroes will be well aware that they are facing one of the country’s form teams.

Leeds finally appear to be mounting a genuine promotion bid under the shrewd guidance of boss Garry Monk after a tumultuous, often farcical 13 years since losing their top-flight status.

They have won seven of their last nine games in all competitions and come into the match sitting pretty in third place in the Championship.

And while the long-suffering Elland Road faithful can now genuinely dream of an imminent Premier League return, a white-knuckle FA Cup run is no less likely to stir their passions.

One need only look at the huge numbers who travelled to the Abbey Stadium for their third-round win over Cambridge United to see how much the FA Cup still means to this proud club.

But what price an upset?

Sutton will certainly look to use the backing of the 5,000-strong crowd to unsettle Monk’s charges and they can also draw on a solid home record this term.

They have been beaten on just three occasions in all competitions at Gander Green Lane, with just one reverse in their last 15 on their own patch.

In former Arsenal trainee Roarie Deacon and striker Maxime Biamou, they possess two men who clearly relish the FA Cup stage, having notched seven goals between them in their run to the fourth round.

Midfield man Craig Eastmond has a Champions League appearance with the Gunners on his CV, while skipper Jamie Collins should be fresh and raring to go as he returns from a two-game ban.

The underdogs will also hope to exploit any lack of cohesion in what could be a much-changed Leeds line-up.

Monk may decide to remove the likes of 20-goal hitman Chris Wood, centre-back Kyle Bartley and winger Liam Bridcutt from the firing line as he looks to keep them fresh for the promotion charge ahead.

Whether this will be enough to open the door for a remarkable Sutton triumph remains to be seen, but the stage looks set for a barnstorming afternoon of FA Cup action in front of the BT Sport cameras.

Sutton United manager Paul Doswell: “Leeds will be the biggest match of my managerial career and I would like to hope that we can do ourselves justice and give the TV a good game and as always there is the underdogs’ chance, isn’t there? It is one we just have to embrace and look forward to.

“But we’ve got a good chance against Leeds on our pitch because no one likes playing on our pitch apart from us. There were a lot of people talking about our pitch prior to the first game against Wimbledon, and we are very, very good on it.”

Leeds United manager Garry Monk: “We are building something and trying to put something in place with this group and this club. My full focus is on that and on doing my best from day one. That will always continue for as long as I am at the club.

“As a manager, you come with the focus of developing something. Football doesn’t always allow you that in management but I work with a short-term view to get the right results as quickly as possible, which then allows you to have a longer-term view of what you want to do. As a manager, you always have a mixture of both.”

Key statistics

  • Sutton United have played Leeds once before in the FA Cup, losing 6-0 to them in 1970.
  • Leeds have progressed from nine of their last 11 ties in the Fourth Round, losing out to Liverpool in 2000/01 and Tottenham in 2009/10.
  • Sutton are the lowest ranked team still left in the competition, beating AFC Wimbledon in a third round replay.
  • In the Fourth Round, the last team from a league below Leeds to knock the Whites out was Oxford in January 1994 – Leeds have won their last five Fourth Round ties of this ilk, most recently in 2002/03 against Gillingham.
  • Sutton have never gone further than this stage, losing 6-0 to Leeds in the fourth round in 1970 and 8-0 to Norwich in 1989.
  • Leeds have won six of their seven FA Cup ties against non-league opposition, losing only to Histon in 2008/09.

Can’t watch the game live?

No problem. We’ll be making highlights of the game available here on BTSport.com and the BT Sport app, while there will be several full re-runs of the match – consult our TV Guide for more information.

Chris: Great that BT are making this game available for all to see.  It means we have a Super Sunday of FA Cup Football now, with two games live on BBC One and one game on BT Showcase.  Lincoln City already through to Round 5 so the non-league dream lives on – will Sutton United join them?
