The Works – Take a Look

theworks-logo

Thanks to The Works, who kindly sent me an academic diary for 2017/18.  So many stores on the high street now, but also a great range online too – and if you see something online, you can select it, and go and collect it from your nearest outlet.

With my MC work in particular, an academic diary is really handy – i’m starting to get bookings for next year, and it means I can make a note of them.  I have two diaries – I have a planner, with my daily to-do lists, and a daily diary, where I write my journal and thoughts – and I’ve done this since 2005!  I started out with my journal by keeping an A5 Day to Page Diary, but now have expanded to an A4 Day to a Page, somehow I manage to fill a page each day with my thoughts!

So, whatever diary  you’re looking for – The Works will have something for you, and if you have anyone you know who’s going back to school, college or university, then all your stationery needs can be sorted here.

For the second year running, Eurosport will broadcast the entire Paris-Roubaix race from start to finish with six hours of LIVE coverage.

Paris-Roubaix is a one-day race known as “The Queen of the Classics” for its prestige and “Hell of the North” for its brutal yet iconic cobblestone sections and tricky race conditions.

The race itself is considered one of the toughest challenges in the world of sport, with riders having to tackle not only the cobblestones of northern France but the elements as well, with weather usually playing a massive part in the result.

Eurosport expert Rob Hatch will be joined by two-time winner of the Paris-Roubaix Sean Kelly in the commentary booth.
Sunday 9 April
1000-1600 LIVE on Eurosport 1

12-16 April: LIVE Cycling: UCI Track World Championships

The 2017 UCI Track Cyclng World Championships will take place in Hong Kong this month, with extensive LIVE coverage on Eurosport.

Olympic champions Katie Archibald, Elinor Barker, Steven Burke and Callum Skinner have been named in British Cycling’s squad for the competition.

Last year’s event in London saw Great Britain top the table with nine medals including five gold. Later that year they produced a strong showing at the Rio Olympic Games and will once again be strong competitors in 2017, with many of the top riders from all nations expected to compete.

Eurosport expert Rob Hatch will be joined by Tony Gibb in the commentary booth.

On the start-list two-time Tour de France winner Alberto Contador is joined by compatriot Alejandro Valverde and Romain Bardet, who claimed third place in the 2016 Tour de France.

Saturday 8 April

9 April: Badminton: Malaysian Open

Eurosport will show highlights of badminton’s Malaysian Open featuring British stars Chris and Gabby Adcock.

Married mixed-doubles pairing Chris and Gabby Adcock were aiming to become the first English pair to reach the YONEX All England final since 2006 recently but just missed out after defeat in the semi-finals.

However, that tournament will have instilled real confidence in the Adcocks, knocking out the Olympic champions in the quarter-finals, and they will go into the Malaysian Open with a good chance of claiming the title.

Sport on Freeview W/C March 18th 2017

Welcome to this week’s blog – listings, plus a weekend review of ‘Stardust’ by Neil Gaiman at the end… what more could you want?!  Tell your friends – spread the word!  Any ideas for the blog, please do get in touch.  Chris

How Can I Receive Front Runner?
Several people have asked me why they can’t receive sports channel Front Runner on Freeview Channel 91. Basically it’s because the channel is only available if you can receive Freeview HD channels. Front Runner isn’t a HD channel, but in simple terms, it uses left over broadcasting space from the HD channels.
So, if your current TV or set top box isn’t HD compatible, then you won’t be able to view it. A lot of older TV sets and set top boxes won’t be able to view this channel. If you have a HD ready TV, this might not be good enough – you need a TV with built in Freeview HD.
One cheap solution is here – https://www.amazon.co.uk/Bush-Freeview-Digital-Set-Top/dp/B00B8GMAC6/ref=sr_1_6?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1489744514&sr=1-6&keywords=freeview+hd+set+top+box – and at £25, would give you the facility to watch Front Runner as well as movie channel Talking Pictures TV, which is another great channel hidden away. Note – this is a set top box, and if you want to reliably record Front Runner, you could look for a more costly option, such as a recordable hard drive. At least with this cheaper option though, you can watch all of the free channels available, not forgetting the HD channels available too.
Is it worth £25 above for the extra channels? I think so – Talking Pictures has a great library of archive British films, and Front Runner is acquiring more and more sport including motorsport and darts. There’s also Vintage TV, a great music channel which is only available if you can receive the Freeview HD channels. And, one you have a compatible TV or set top box, there’s no subscription – it’s free after that.
Can everyone view the Freeview HD channels?
No, around 75% of the UK can now receive them, but only if they have the right equipment. Check this link before purchasing – https://www.freeview.co.uk/channels-at-your-address and if Front Runner appears, then you can receive them.

Going forward, highlights from Front Runner’s TV listings, as well as Sport on S4c, and BT Showcase on Freeview Channel 59 will appear within our main channel listings below.  I hope this helps!  Please let me know what you think! I also host a show on internet radio station Live Sports FM – their programmes are listed below too, within the main guide.  Pay per view channels now feature at the end of the article.  Chris

SGORIO: NEWTOWN V LLANDUDNO, kick off 15.00, live from Latham Park.

Join Dylan Ebenezer, Nicky John and the red-button-boys for a crucial Conference tie in the Dafabet Welsh Premier League as Newtown welcome Llandudno at Latham Park. Despite a very disappointing first half of the season, Newtown’s excellent February and the goal threat of Jason Oswell and the returning Nick Rushton saw them climb into Europa League play-off contention. Their main rivals for the play-offs are Alan Morgan’s Llandudno who will be keen to grab a second bite at Europe. English sound-track available via the red button on Sky, Freeview or Virgin Media. Freesat viewers should use the audio selection option. Kick off 15.00. (EC) (S)

Chris’s Weekend Feature – Stardust Audio CD Review
‘Stardust’ by Neil Gaiman has indeed been adapted into a big-budget Hollywood movie in recent years, but in December, BBC Radio 4 transmitted a two part adaption with an all star cast, including Maggie Steed, Sanjeev Bhaskar and Sophie Rundle (and there’s cameos from the author himself!).  There’s also an appearance from singer Tori Amos!

Having not seen the 2007 movie or read the book, this was my first experience of the Neil Gaiman novel. So what’s it all about? This synopsis from the BBC Radio 4 Stardust page, gives you a tease of the complex plot that unravels…

Challenged to retrieve a fallen star by the beautiful Victoria Forester, to whom he has lost his heart, Tristran Thorn leaves his home in the sleepy English village of Wall and crosses into the mysterious and magical land of Faerie. But when Tristran locates the fallen star he discovers it is no mere meteorite, but an injured young woman, Yvaine.

Tristran, however, is not the only person to have seen and be in pursuit of the fallen star. Deep in Faerie, Morwanneg the witch queen, is also hunting the star, whose heart she plans to cut out to restore youth to herself and her sisters.
High on Mount Huon, Primus, Tertius and Septimus, the three living heirs to the realm of Stormhold, seek out the star to claim the right to their recently deceased father’s kingdom, and each will stop at nothing – not even murder – to ensure they are the only brother left in the running for the throne!
With Yvaine’s life in danger, she and Tristran find themselves embarking on an extraordinary adventure, full of danger and intrigue as they flee across Faerie. Encountering Little Hairy Men, witches, and lightning-hunting sky pirates along the way, Tristran is about to uncover the secret to his own identity and a fate beyond his wildest dreams at his journey’s end.

At 2 ½ hours duration, it’s a great adaptation, that keeps you hooked until the very end.  A great plot… the story really comes to life in this drama.  Brilliant narration from Eleanor Bron – if I didn’t keep up with a scene, the narrative brings me back where I should be!  Directed by Dirk Maggs and Heather Larmour – Dirk directed radio versions of ‘The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy’, ‘Batman’ and ‘Superman’ – so an excellent CV, and this just adds to it.

And, I’ve been listening to the CD in two different cars – hopping to and from work.  The CD’s have easy to access navigation points, with ten chapters on each disc so you can easily find the place that you’re ready to listen to.

I think I might have to read or listen to more Neil Gaiman – there’s plenty out there, and I like what I heard!  Check out Gaiman’s other novels – there’s ‘Neverwhere’, ‘Smoke and Mirrors’, ‘Fragile Things’ and ‘American Gods’ amongst others.  Chris

Today’s live online rugby match from the WRU Wednesday Under 18 Cup competition is Cowbridge High School v Coleg Sir Gâr. Commentary: Wyn Gruffydd. Web broadcast starts at 14.55 on s4c.cymru

Highlights at 22.00 on S4C, with Owain Gwynedd and commentary from Wyn Gruffydd. (EC) (S)

SATURDAY 26 NOVEMBER

17.00 CLWB RYGBI RHYNGWLADOL: GEMAU’R HYDREF – CYMRU v DE AFFRICA, kick off 17.30, live from the Principality Stadium.

Live coverage as Wales welcome South Africa to the Principality Stadium in the fourth and final match of the 2016 Under Armour Autumn International Series. Although Wales have beaten Argentina and Japan in the two previous weekends, this Autumn series has been far from flawless for Rob Howley’s side. However victory over an out-of-sorts South Africa side would surely end the campaign on a positive note. The Springboks have lost both of their Autumn matches to date, against England and Italy, but they will be desperate to avoid a clean sweep of losses when they visit Cardiff. Gareth Rhys Owen leads coverage, with Gareth Charles and former Wales captain Gwyn Jones in the commentary box. Kick off is at 17.30.

SUNDAY 27 NOVEMBER

15.15 CLWB RYGBI: NEWPORT GWENT DRAGONS V EDINBURGH, kick off 15.30, live from Rodney Parade.

Clwb Rygbi returns as Guinness PRO12 action resumes following a fortnight of Anglo-Welsh Cup matches. Having seen off reigning champions Connacht 21-16 in their last league outing earlier this month, the Newport Gwent Dragons will be hopeful of picking up where they left off against Edinburgh. Similar to the Dragons, the Scottish visitors have had a mixed season to date but visit Rodney Parade in good spirits after defeating title contenders Ulster 28-17 last time out. Gareth Rhys Owen will be joined in the studio by former Welsh international brothers Nicky and Jamie Robinson, while Gareth Charles and Gwyn Jones are in the commentary box. English soundtrack available via the red button on Sky, Freeview or Virgin Media. Freesat viewers should use the audio selection option. Kick off is at 15.30. (EC) (S)

PLUS on Clwb2, Dylan Ebenezer reviews Wales’ game against South Africa. There are highlights of all the Principality Premiership rugby games and in football we take a look at Wrexham against Forest Green from the Racecourse. Plus, Met Cardiff’s women’s basketball team take on Oakland in Cyncoed and the Cardiff Devils are away to Coventry. The programme gets underway at 17.45 on Sunday 27 November. (S)

AND a round-up of La Liga and Dafabet Welsh Premier League action on Sgorio, at 18.30 on Monday 28 November.

AND a chance to re-live all 80 minutes of the Ospreys’ Guinness PRO12 to trip to Glasgow, on Clwb Rygbi, at 22.00 on Monday 28 November. (EC)

(S) English subtitles
(EC) English soundtrack available via the red button on Sky, Freeview or Virgin Media. Freesat viewers should use the audio selection option

S4C is available on: Sky 104, Freeview 4, Virgin TV 166 and Freesat 104 in Wales

Sky 134, Freesat 120 and Virgin TV 166 in England, Scotland and Northern Ireland

S4C HD is available for Sky and Freesat viewers in Wales and across the UK.

Live online and on demand on s4c.cymru and by using the S4C app for iOS and Android.
