The Works – Take a Look

theworks-logo

Thanks to The Works, who kindly sent me an academic diary for 2017/18.  So many stores on the high street now, but also a great range online too – and if you see something online, you can select it, and go and collect it from your nearest outlet.

With my MC work in particular, an academic diary is really handy – i’m starting to get bookings for next year, and it means I can make a note of them.  I have two diaries – I have a planner, with my daily to-do lists, and a daily diary, where I write my journal and thoughts – and I’ve done this since 2005!  I started out with my journal by keeping an A5 Day to Page Diary, but now have expanded to an A4 Day to a Page, somehow I manage to fill a page each day with my thoughts!

So, whatever diary  you’re looking for – The Works will have something for you, and if you have anyone you know who’s going back to school, college or university, then all your stationery needs can be sorted here.

Sport on Freeview W/C March 18th 2017

Welcome to this week’s blog – listings, plus a weekend review of ‘Stardust’ by Neil Gaiman at the end… what more could you want?!  Tell your friends – spread the word!  Any ideas for the blog, please do get in touch.  Chris

How Can I Receive Front Runner?
Several people have asked me why they can’t receive sports channel Front Runner on Freeview Channel 91. Basically it’s because the channel is only available if you can receive Freeview HD channels. Front Runner isn’t a HD channel, but in simple terms, it uses left over broadcasting space from the HD channels.
So, if your current TV or set top box isn’t HD compatible, then you won’t be able to view it. A lot of older TV sets and set top boxes won’t be able to view this channel. If you have a HD ready TV, this might not be good enough – you need a TV with built in Freeview HD.
One cheap solution is here – https://www.amazon.co.uk/Bush-Freeview-Digital-Set-Top/dp/B00B8GMAC6/ref=sr_1_6?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1489744514&sr=1-6&keywords=freeview+hd+set+top+box – and at £25, would give you the facility to watch Front Runner as well as movie channel Talking Pictures TV, which is another great channel hidden away. Note – this is a set top box, and if you want to reliably record Front Runner, you could look for a more costly option, such as a recordable hard drive. At least with this cheaper option though, you can watch all of the free channels available, not forgetting the HD channels available too.
Is it worth £25 above for the extra channels? I think so – Talking Pictures has a great library of archive British films, and Front Runner is acquiring more and more sport including motorsport and darts. There’s also Vintage TV, a great music channel which is only available if you can receive the Freeview HD channels. And, one you have a compatible TV or set top box, there’s no subscription – it’s free after that.
Can everyone view the Freeview HD channels?
No, around 75% of the UK can now receive them, but only if they have the right equipment. Check this link before purchasing – https://www.freeview.co.uk/channels-at-your-address and if Front Runner appears, then you can receive them.

Going forward, highlights from Front Runner’s TV listings, as well as Sport on S4c, and BT Showcase on Freeview Channel 59 will appear within our main channel listings below.  I hope this helps!  Please let me know what you think! I also host a show on internet radio station Live Sports FM – their programmes are listed below too, within the main guide.  Pay per view channels now feature at the end of the article.  Chris

Chris’s Weekend Feature – Stardust Audio CD Review
‘Stardust’ by Neil Gaiman has indeed been adapted into a big-budget Hollywood movie in recent years, but in December, BBC Radio 4 transmitted a two part adaption with an all star cast, including Maggie Steed, Sanjeev Bhaskar and Sophie Rundle (and there’s cameos from the author himself!).  There’s also an appearance from singer Tori Amos!

Having not seen the 2007 movie or read the book, this was my first experience of the Neil Gaiman novel. So what’s it all about? This synopsis from the BBC Radio 4 Stardust page, gives you a tease of the complex plot that unravels…

Challenged to retrieve a fallen star by the beautiful Victoria Forester, to whom he has lost his heart, Tristran Thorn leaves his home in the sleepy English village of Wall and crosses into the mysterious and magical land of Faerie. But when Tristran locates the fallen star he discovers it is no mere meteorite, but an injured young woman, Yvaine.

Tristran, however, is not the only person to have seen and be in pursuit of the fallen star. Deep in Faerie, Morwanneg the witch queen, is also hunting the star, whose heart she plans to cut out to restore youth to herself and her sisters.
High on Mount Huon, Primus, Tertius and Septimus, the three living heirs to the realm of Stormhold, seek out the star to claim the right to their recently deceased father’s kingdom, and each will stop at nothing – not even murder – to ensure they are the only brother left in the running for the throne!
With Yvaine’s life in danger, she and Tristran find themselves embarking on an extraordinary adventure, full of danger and intrigue as they flee across Faerie. Encountering Little Hairy Men, witches, and lightning-hunting sky pirates along the way, Tristran is about to uncover the secret to his own identity and a fate beyond his wildest dreams at his journey’s end.

At 2 ½ hours duration, it’s a great adaptation, that keeps you hooked until the very end.  A great plot… the story really comes to life in this drama.  Brilliant narration from Eleanor Bron – if I didn’t keep up with a scene, the narrative brings me back where I should be!  Directed by Dirk Maggs and Heather Larmour – Dirk directed radio versions of ‘The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy’, ‘Batman’ and ‘Superman’ – so an excellent CV, and this just adds to it.

And, I’ve been listening to the CD in two different cars – hopping to and from work.  The CD’s have easy to access navigation points, with ten chapters on each disc so you can easily find the place that you’re ready to listen to.

I think I might have to read or listen to more Neil Gaiman – there’s plenty out there, and I like what I heard!  Check out Gaiman’s other novels – there’s ‘Neverwhere’, ‘Smoke and Mirrors’, ‘Fragile Things’ and ‘American Gods’ amongst others.  Chris
