S4C to show highlights coverage of Lions’ tour to New Zealand

The British and Irish Lions face the ultimate test this summer as they travel to New Zealand to take on the All Blacks and Welsh broadcaster S4C will be with them every step of the way.

An agreement with Sky Sports – live broadcaster and the official licensee in the UK and Ireland – means that viewers will be able to enjoy free-to-air highlights coverage of each game in the Welsh language.

S4C will broadcast highlights of all 10 fixtures including the three test matches against the back-to-back world champions. The exclusive free-to-air highlights will be shown on the same day of each game with an evening transmission. Catrin Heledd will lead the presentation team, while Gareth Rhys Owen and Wyn Gruffydd will share commentary duties.

S4C’s coverage, produced by Sunset and Vine Cymru and Sports Media Services, will start on Saturday 3 June, with the opening match of the tour against the Provincial Union XV.

The first test against the All Blacks takes place on Saturday 24 June at the iconic Eden Park in Auckland, while the second test will be held a week later at the Westpac Stadium, Wellington, on Saturday 1 July. The final test sees both teams return to Eden Park on Saturday 8 July.

S4C is available on all platforms in Wales and on Sky, Freesat and Virgin Media all over the UK. A HD service can be enjoyed on a both the Sky and Freesat platforms.

S4C Content Commissioner, Sport Sue Butler said: “A British and Irish Lions tour to New Zealand is something that only comes around once every 12 years and is a truly unique event in the world of sport.  We hope viewers will be delighted that we are able to offer free-to-air highlights of every game on S4C.”

Chris: Great that the Lions games will be on Freeview – and via BBC Iplayer, everyone will be able to see some of the action.

BT Showcase Schedule Updated 06.05.17

Check out my updated schedule for BT Showcase right here.  The BT Showcase page has also been updated.  Chris

BT Showcase – So What Now? (Updated 09.05.17)

BT Showcase was on Freeview Channel 59, but what about the future?  Well, from May 9th, the channel will move to Freeview Channel 115 – and will be in HD.  Unfortunately it will mean that unless you can receive Freeview HD channels (e.g BBC One on 101), then you won’t be able to find BT Showcase in its new location.  Channel 59 may well be sold now to another broadcaster – we shall see…  I feel sorry for my Uncle Frank; he loved watching the Champions and Europa League games, but I rang him this morning and we’ve checked – he won’t be able to receive BT Showcase anymore.

I think 115 will be a cheaper slot for BT – can anyone confirm this?  It only reaches approximately 75% of the population.

Here are merely my predictions for the channel – let me know what you think.  Please comment below.

BT Showcase Schedule Updated 06.05.17

Take a look at the spreadsheet above – detailing everything that’s been shown on the channel.

In its first year, BT Showcase broadcast over 112 hours of programming, and this season there has been over 222 hours of programming so far. So, let’s be grateful for that – the more sport on Freeview, the better for everyone!  Chris

European Football

http://sport.bt.com/football/bt-retains-exclusive-rights-to-uefa-champions-league-and-uefa-europa-league-S11364161627708

In this statement, BT said “BT will enhance its social media coverage to reach new audiences, by making clips, weekly highlights, UEFA’s magazine show, and both finals available for free on social media. BT streamed both finals last year on YouTube for the first time, taking the number of people who watched BT’s live coverage of the finals to more than twelve million.  The company will also seek to bring the best of the action to its large mobile customer base.”  In my opinion, I think the 14 Europa League games will be shown next season, and the 12 Champions League games will be shown, as required for the last year of the current contract… but from the 2018/19 season we will see highlights via BT Sport’s You Tube Channel and the 2 finals streamed live on there too.

Aviva Premiership Rugby

As reported on my blog this week, Channel 5 have picked up five live games a season, for the next four years, plus weekly highlights.  BT Showcase currently shows nine live games a season, but these are often not mentioned in TV listings.  I have contacted the BT newsroom to see if the nine games will continue on BT Showcase, I guess they won’t, but as of yet I haven’t received a reply.

Big Bash Cricket

BT won a free-to-air package for the Australian Big Bash Cricket League, which started in 2016 and will run for five years.

The article says “BT Sport has also acquired a free-to-air rights package that includes daily highlights of international matches and the Big Bash League, as well as one Big Bash League ‘match of the round’ broadcast live and free each week.”

BT sold the selection of free live games to Channel 5, and broadcast the daily highlights on BT Showcase.  What could happen to these highlights?  With Champions and Europa League continuing for at least another season, I predict the 2017 Big Bash League highlights will remain on BT Showcase.  As for 2018-2020, could these be sold to Channel 5 and perhaps shown on Spike- which is a channel which shows wrestling, boxing, etc?

Other Programming

BT Sport Score is a bonus that we get to see on Saturday – as are the occasion WTA Tennis finals and previews of AMC dramas.  For me, I would have loved to have seen Vanarama Football highlights on the channel – these are made available on BT’s You Tube site, so why can’t they be scheduled in on Freeview, to attract even more people to the National League?

Freeview platforms are expensive – and with no necessary programming on the channel, the space could easily be sold to another broadcaster – the channel currently has broadcast space from 12noon each day.

Cycling on Quest – Giro D’ Italia Highlights in May

One to look out for – many thanks to Quest for letting me know!  It’s a great addition to Quest, to my knowledge I don’t think the Giro D’ Italia was shown last year on ITV4.  Is there a cycling fan out there that can confirm this?  Enjoy the coverage, there’s 21 hours of highlights to look forward to.  Chris

BAMMA to air on Dave

UKTV’s leading entertainment channel Dave will exclusively air Live MMA World Title Fight, set to take place live from the Genting Arena in Birmingham on 12 May.

Two world title fights top-off an action-packed card headlined by Heavyweights – UK’s Brett ‘The Spartan’ McDermott Vs Germany’s Ruben ‘The Viking’ Wolf – live. Dave’s live coverage of the evening’s events from 9pm – 11pm.

All the action and commentary across the evening will be led by seasoned MMA presenter Andy Shepherd alongside main pundit, former WBA Heavyweight Champion David Haye. Each clash will be made up of 3 x 5 minute rounds with 60″ breaks between.

Live MMA World Title Fight is ordered by director of commissioning Richard Watsham and Dave general manager Steve North. The announcement further extends Dave’s live sport coverage following live boxing, cricket and darts events in 2016, and the Tie Break Tens tennis tournament this May.

The co-main event will be MMA World Middleweight championship fight, between Yannick ‘Black Mamba’ Bahati and Matt ‘Farmer Boy’ Hallam. Former MMA professional Paddy Holohan will also present some of the action across the evening.

Richard Watsham, director of commissioning UKTV, said,

David Green’s BAMMA events are of the very best quality in terms of both sporting spectacle and sheer adrenaline. Given the further growth in popularity of MMA and Dave’s continued presence in free to air sport, there’s an excellent opportunity to build on the existing fanbase and introduce new viewers to this highly skilled sport.

Dave general manager Steve North, said,

Mixed martial arts is growing in popularity and appeals to a young and highly engaged audience which is perfect for Dave. David Haye is a familiar face for Dave viewers after we showed his comeback fight last year and we’re delighted to have him back for Live MMA World Title Fight.

David Green, BAMMA CEO said,

We are delighted to be partnering with Dave and to continue bringing MMA fans the very best in British Mixed Martial Arts. MMA is one of the most exciting live sports in the world and fans now get the opportunity to watch all the BAMMA action on one of the UK’s best loved channels.

McDermott is one of the nation’s most feared Heavyweights. With huge punching power and an attacking style designed to KO opponents, 12 May offers McDermott his greatest ever prize in MMA – the coveted BAMMA Heavyweight Title.

His equally as powerful and motivated German opponent, Wolf travels to Birmingham with the sole intention of defeating both McDermott and the hometown crowd and returning to Germany with the Heavyweight belt in hand.
